The Sonics moving proved that tradition means jack shit to the NBA. RE: NHL, there was a rumor that the Winterhawks owner (a billionaire) was toying with the idea of buying the New Jersey Devils. But nothing came of it that I'm aware of.
I for one would love to see a team here in Vancouver...but Seattle fans deserve the Sonics ahead of another Canadian team. I'm just not sure Vancouver would support the NBA? They are obviously into hockey....but attendance was awful when the Grizzlies played here. Of course the team sucked, but it just didn't quite feel like an NBA crowd.
In a metroplex of a couple million, you only need 15k committed fans and enough casual bandwaggoners to keep the stadium filled. And there are always going to be idiots and those who are willfully ignorant, wherever you go. Many in Seattle end up on city councils and county committees. My grandmother, until she died in January, refused since about 2000 to read about the Blazers in the Oregonian she got every day and would've voted against every dime the city put towards them. She still thought that the "pimple-faced druggie" (Damon) still was the leader and spokesman of the team and the "roots to the community". She didn't honk, fwiw.

Very sad day if Seattle gets hockey before Portland. It's a shame Portland has such horrible leadership. The city refuses to think big and attract businesses. A city simply can't survive on boutiques
Paul Allen and Paul Allen alone controls weather Portland gets hockey. He could buy a team whenever he feels like it. I'd love to have hockey in Portland.
You'd think there would be one or two owners wanting sell given the fact that they've locked out the players for the 2nd time in under 10 years.
Sucks. I'd rather see a team from Nashville/Atlanta/Tampa Bay (though the stadium is mere blocks from my new place)/Phoenix lose a team than a Canadian city.
This just reminded me of the fact that Phoenix is owned by the NHL right now. Allen should just call the NHL up and buy them. It gets hockey out of the desert and gets the team off of the NHL's books.
Allen has tried to buy at least two NHL teams, but the sales didn't work out. He was been offered an expansion team, but turned it down. If Seattle gets a team maybe it'll light a fire under his ass to bring a team to Portland.
When I first read your post I thought you were implying that Paul Allen alone controls the weather. Could you imagine how rich that MOFO would be if it were true?
The Wolves have been out of the first round how many times in their teams existence? Oh, that's right - ONCE. Mediocre4Life, indeed.
