I stand corrected. Thanks for enlightening me. You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to PtldPlatypus again.

The NBA owners forced Sterling out of their club. Sterling foolishly spent money on a losing case to regain control from his wife, and even had witnesses basically perjure themselves on the stand. Luckily the judge didn't fall for it.

I guess I still have an issue with someone having evidence illegally obtained used against them to force them out of a cartel. Go ahead and suspend his day-to-day management, but forcing him to sell such a valuable asset strikes me as unjust. The tax and inheritance consequences to me are chilling.

Agreed, and that's the risk inherent in being part of, as you call it, a cartel that can basically make up its own rules. But as long as the masses are OK with the way Silver wields his morality hammer, there's no reason for him to behave otherwise.

If by masses, you mean the owners, they were the impetus behind the move. Silver couldn't have banished Sterling indefinitely and forced a sale without a majority vote from the owners, which he ensured he had.

If the masses are the fans, they'll never be relevant in matters like this. Silver's bosses are the owners.

The masses in this case were the players who provide the very product Silver is responsible to protect, as well as the sporting news media. The owners likely wouldn't have cared an iota about Sterling's racism if it didn't threaten to impact their revenues. When the talking heads started spewing venom, and the players began talking protest, it then became a problem for the owners.

    It's all connected.

How was it illegally obtained? Sterling gave his consent to be recorded. It's why no arrests have been made of the weirdo who recorded him. I'm sure he didn't give consent for it to be released, but that isn't a point of law.

It isn't? You can't record something and then have the expectation of privacy? Weren't the recordings his? If he owns them, then he gets to decide what to do with them, right?

When has he claimed ownership of the tapes? Faceshield recorded him; I assume she had ownership of the tapes. You're making the claim that the tapes were illegally obtained. I haven't found or heard of any legal findings that support that point of view.

It was my understanding that he requested he be recorded for his future memoirs. In that sense, it would be insane that he wouldn't insist that ownership of the tapes were his. Perhaps he's really lost it if it is as you say. A lawyer saying those kinds of things, knowing he was being recorded, without insisting he control the tapes? Inconceivable.

For a conniving scumbag like Sterling, I think so.

Yeah, me too, but it was a chance to use this meme and I just couldn't pass it up. Of course, it's possible that Sterling's genitalia got the better of his conniving scumbag lawyer mind.

Don't get me wrong, I almost used it myself! That word will forever be associated with Wallace Shawn.
