it's funny watching people care about something that should be about education, and not athletics. Good stuff.
I understand why you feel the way you do. It seriously sucks that Taggart is sitting down with them, but he has the right to listen to their pitch and tell them thanks but no thanks. I just hope that's all it is. Does anybody want to court Stotts?
Why would Phil Knight be able to offer him any money? He doesn't work for the school, how would his financial input help?
I don't know how it works at Oregon, but Navy's coach doesn't get a dime from the government. He's paid by the Naval Academy Alumni Association, a non-profit affiliated with the Academy and under an Operating Agreement. Navy obviously doesn't bring in as much revenue as Oregon across the sports board, nor do they have sponsors like Nike. But the NAAA often gives out interest-free home loans to coaches relocating to Annapolis. http://www.capitalgazette.com/news/ph-ac-cn-agreement-0104-20150102-story.html
Taggart is gone. I was never enamoured with that hire anyway. Though it looks like the praise he got as a recruiter turned out to be true, and that'll be a blow if he leaves, but it's not like he himself is some kind of football god. The Ducks success last year was due to Hebert and the much improved defense of Jim Levitt.
Never got to see if he can coach or not, but he is a hell of a recruiter, and put together a ridiculous staff
May be it's better we never found out. He could have been a great recruiter but a bad X's and O's guy. He hasn't really had a huge win against a Top Ten opponent in his whole career. Personally, I think with his recruiting and Leavitt he was set. He could have run that Gulf Coast Offense successfully here and won 9 And 10 games even if he wasn't Chip Kelly. But he may have bitten off more than he can chew. Florida State fans were getting on Jimbo after a couple of so so years. I'd hire Justin Wilcox and call it a day. Oregon is HIS dream job and I am fucking sick of people who have to head coaches who this state. Smith at OSU and Wilcox at UO. Let's get people who actually care about local football.
I wonder if Oregon would have been interested in bringing Chip Kelly back, had he waited till this Taggart thing was settled (or if Kelly would be interested in coming back).
FSU is a tier 1 football program with a storied past. U of O is a tier 2, upstart program with Phil Knight and just a so-so pedigree. Kind of hard to fault the native Floridian for going if he does. "Loyalty" is a mirage in sports, so he might as well seize whatever opportunities arise, because who knows if he'll get another shot.
Anybody who thinks Chip Kelly didn't field offers when he was coaching here is delusional....they all do if they're winning.....I think Duck fans overreact to everything...it's not a big deal to me if any coach moves on...yet some folks sure can hate on guys who want to stay here....(Stotts comes to mind)...
