There in lies the problem. The government is spending an enormous amount of energy/money to fight a pretty harmless drug, certainly less harmful than alcohol. I think its the feds' stubbornness (word?) and stupidity that has a lot of people riled up.

No, he was charged with distribution for filling a bong and passing it around.

Yes, that's not uncommon in the least. Anybody can be arrested for any reason if an officer so chooses. It doesn't mean the charges will stick, but the arrest has still been made. Police use this tactic regularly as a very effective coercion technique.

"Prohibition... goes beyond the bound of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded" -Abraham Lincoln

"Makes a crime out of things that are not crimes."

Lincoln is absolutely correct, and unforunately the American justice system has been so perverted that easily more than half of the crimes in this country are not actually crimes. The crime is the selective persecution of supposedly free people.

In all reality the police are actually the criminals. They are human rights violators of the worst kind.
