The Lakers are too famous a franchise/brand to change the name. It adds to it, so I don't think it's a stupid name. A stupid name is the Toronto Raptors (named after Jurassic Park), they need to go back to the Huskies. Same with the New Jersey Nets (to rhyme with the Mets and Jets). New Orleans Jazz sounds awesome.
Salt Lake City Saints Los Angeles Stars Ironically, there was an ABA team called the Los Angeles Stars that moved to Utah and became the Utah Stars. BNM
Since the team is going to see major changes this summer, this is the perfect time for the Lakers to change their name. How about the Deserts? Or the Cacti. Or just, the Media Favorites.
Abe Pollin was a really good, decent man. He felt that the name "Bullets" in (at the time) the city called "The Murder Capital of the World" was inappropriate. It was a heartfelt, not a marketing decision. I remember when they held a contest in the Washington Posts to rename the Bullets, asking us to select among the four finalist names. The other three "finalist" names were so bad, it was obvious what they wanted to name the team. My friends and I decided to vote for the very worst name because the contest was so transparent. That name? The Washington Sea Dogs. I kid you not.
Changing the name was still stupid. Who cares if its filled with violence. Like changing the name of the NBA franchise will change that at all. No one cared. Washington Wizards sounds like a damned board game.
how bout a list of worst jerseys in the NBA. 1. Thunder ( i feel the logo lacks inspiration and so do their jerseys. Seems like they rushed them as quickly as they rushed out of Seattle) 2. Bobcats
Clearly targeted at the 8 and under demographic who associate Orlando with the nearby home of large ears and long lines (aka: Magic Kingdom). BNM
Their mascot is even dumber. It looks like Barney with a bad case of roid rage. Since when are dinosaurs purple? BNM
Made sense when they were in San Diego. Maybe they should have switched back to Braves when they moved to LA. Nah, too politically incorrect. Los Angeles Losers fits their image and rolls nicely off the tongue. BNM
I guess they COULD have been. We'll never know, probably But "raptors" are actually birds of prey (like hawks). Velociraptors are dinosaurs... and while they can be called "raptors" it's still just a stupid name when it's associated with a dinosaur. Ed O.
Well, there is also the Utah Raptor that was "discovered" after Jurassic Park came out that was quite similar to the fictitious velociraptors depicted in the movie. Most species evolve in color and pattern to blend in with their surroundings. Given that chlorophyll has always been green and the Earth's soil is shades of brown, beige and black, I doubt if any dinosaurs were purple. If they were, they wouldn't have lasted long, regardless if they were predator or prey. BNM
