Saddest news since my buddy was murdered near my old house. Sad Sad Sad.... Probably already said in here but this is a thread that is tough to read all the comments, but PA had such a reach of influence that transcends so much further than the NBA. He helped to create the world we live in today, for better or worse, he was a pioneer and helped paved the way to our future.
I mostly agree, but the Blazers were below the salary floor when they took on Varejao so they were going to have to pay that money one way or another.
Allen paid top dollar for players, draft picks, assistant coaches, ballshaggers, office, you name it, he didn't negotiate hard. Many NBA owners are known as cheapskates (like our next one, I expect). McGowan's own pay is probably inflated (he'll leave eventually). Employees at all Vulcan ventures, not just the Blazers, are now worried about their futures. Most of them lose money or just break even (they are kind of Allen charities--he didn't chase profit). For example, on this thread, many engineers have always said that Stratolaunch (the world's biggest airplane) has no economic reason to exist. https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=27520.2160#msg1867965
Will Allen's space vehicle development survive? These are to be carried to airplane altitude by Stratolaunch, then ignited. https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=27520.msg1848886#msg1848886 (And welcome to my favorite message board. Not an S2 competitor.)
Paul Allen should be announced as the starting small forward on opening night and the Blazers should take the floor with only 4 players. Similar to what the University of Nebraska did with the Missing Man formation last season.
Wow, I had no idea he was even sick. I just saw "Paul Allen dead" in the Google search bar and was like no fucking way. RIP Mr. Allen.
Should I take offense that I have not seen anything from Roy, Wes, Oden, etc about Mr. Allen's passing?
When it comes down to it, he was one of the most influential people in the known history of mankind. Personal computers changed everything. Microsoft changed everything.
RIP Paul Allen. Extending my condolences to all his family. The cancer must have been very aggressive stage 4.
You all know about Paul Allen as owner of the Blazers and Seahawks, and how he and Bill started Microsoft. Many of you have learned about Bill's fascination with Rock and Roll history, and was himself a guitar player of note. However, perhaps more than any of these things, he took philanthropy seriously. If you have the chance, read a blurb on wikipedia about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Allen#Philanthropy
You'd have to believe Paul's wish's pertaining to his Blazers are addressed wit a succession plan that has been approved by the NBA, As Im sure they would require one.
