Real estate is the most expensive asset most people own. It often is the bulk of peoples' life savings. It enables most people to retire with dignity, if they pay off their loans or reverse mortgage. The nature of the investment is one of high leverage. If you put 5% down on a $100K home and it goes up 5% in value, you made $5,000 on a $5,000 investment. The complaints about disparity are about petty jealousy and demonization of people for political gain.
