Nike is a public company and Phil isn't the CEO or chairman of the board. If Nike was handing out contracts to players above their value they'd get sued in derivative lawsuits that would make a lot of lawyers very rich. Your scenario would only be a real risk with privately held companies.
it can go both ways really from phil knights side, it makes sense to keep it private, cause they dont want anyone else to bid from jody allens side, she might want it leaked in order to get someone else to bid in a hurry and therefore sell it to the highest bidder
You would think there might even be discussions with the potential new owners opinion of what should be done. Great news because we know what Jody/Vulcan/Cronin have come up with is terrible. No guarantee additional input will be better, but it has a chance to be, and can't really be much worse.
The Cronin deal could have been a "severance" for Cronin spending so much time with the organization. Phil could come in and fire him and place his own pick. Or - phil was involved in these discussions already and its closer than you'd think. Lots of possibilities that could mean nothing or something.
I'm not a baseball fan at all, but just cursory research on how the Dodgers have run things in recent history tells me they spend like mad to win. I would welcome that mentality again.
I doubt there will be a lot of bids. I also doubt Mr. Knight cares if there were. He just wants to see Portland get a viable owner that keeps them here. If someone else comes in that is a better option, I bet he would be ok with that. As for Jody, I doubt she cares about jacking up the price. She just doesn't want to get lowballed. And she wants to see the team stay in Portland too.
Smolinsky doesn’t have a problem opening up the pocket book as he has with the Dodgers having the highest payroll. So he wouldn’t mind going heavy into the lux tax i would think. An owner hungry to win
Please make this happen ASAP --- when i saw this i thought i was asleep and dreaming cause I never saw this coming . All i can say is both sides DO NOT SCREW this up and make it happen NOW !!!

"Portland is considered one of the league's smaller media market teams but has a long history of rabid fan support and regular-season and playoff success. Forbes valued the Trail Blazers at $2.05 billion in its 2021 rankings, making it the 13th most valuable franchise in the NBA."
