To me it's not even close as David Gilmour's guitar playing and voice was so much stronger than Waters contributions. I give credit to Waters for writing much of The Wall, but I prefer Gilmours style much more.
God that's so tough... Without Gilmour, Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH, and Animals would be nothing at all... but without the lyrics, they ALSO would be nothing at all. I hate The Wall, but that four album sequence from Meddle through Animals is sacrosanct, and frankly you can't tease out one or the other as more important to the whole, which was so much more than the sum of the parts. That said... Gilmour's guitar playing is so good, so perfect, so soulful...
I never cared much for Floyds early stuff with Syd Barrett. They didn't become relevant to me until Gilmour came on with his melodic guitar playing and soulful singing.
Both together are better than on their own....I have Gilmour's first solo album and it sounds like a Pink Floyd album but is painfully slow..I think Waters is the visionary...he's not a real gifted player but more of a poet....Water's solo work doesn't stand up either....together they made it work...The Moody Blues were a much more talented band....I think of Pink Floyd as a really plain looking girl in a beautiful dress......sound processing..
I saw Roger Waters at Desert Trip and it was basically a Floyd show. Pretty much everything was from Animals, Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Wall. I'm not sure if Gilmour is allowed to perform songs from those albums or not.
True story: I went to college with Rick Wright's daughter. I would've told her that "Remember a Day" is one of my fave early Floyd songs but we moved in different circles.
I loved Syd Barretts spirit in the early Floyd recordings...Rick Wright was a big part of their sound...funny he was fired before they broke up and paid a salary to play with them.pm the last tour with Waters and the following tours without him....came out of the tour as the only member to make any money.
I agree. My take on MB> Moody Blues had some good tours. I saw them. Ray Thomas should leave... and................ However, when an edgy band such as The Fixx is on the same bill, they get blown away.
I believe Ray Thomas died.....they are dinosaurs now...their first four recordings were genius though...Justin Hayward has the best distorted tone I've ever heard come from an electric guitar....dude has serious tone. They came up playing the same UFO club that Pink Floyd did I believe..
That's incorrect as David Gilmour and Pink Floyd (after Waters was gone) have been playing those songs in concert for years. Waters tried to get Pink Floyd to cease as a band and an out of court settlement allowed Pink Floyd to continue without Waters and Waters receiving the rights to The Wall and the inflatable pig from Animals.
Waters is the soul, Gilmour is the voice. As people, I think I would enjoy Gilmour's (positive) company much more than Waters' (negative).
In planning my Costa Rica trip I was recently notified Roger Waters will play his only Central American date in San Jose in November.
Listening to Pink Floyd somehow always made me feel like I was walking a mile, knee deep in molasses. Just couldn’t do it and still can’t. But The Moody Blues were a whole ‘nother story. Brilliant music. Every Good Boy Deserves Favor is still on my all time Top 10 album list.
