<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Unconfirmed reports indicate that Larry Brown may be willing to discuss a sign and trade for the player he traded to the Spurs last season- Speedy Claxton.

Brown has been courting Claxton for some time and may consider making a trade for him according to sources in Detroit.

According to published reports, none of the other second-tier free agents - like power foward Derrick Coleman and Tyronn Lue - are of interest to the Pistons because Brown does not consider them improvements over what they have.

Popovich, speaking to The Associated Press, today said the Spurs are now looking at one or two trades to upgrade their offensive talent, then will add a backup point guard and an additional big man</div>

I think chucky might be gone soon..LB loves Speedy in what he brings..and i do too....hope we get him

I would nt mind having cliff. I heard Golden state is going to go after Speedy once Areanas signs an offer sheet.

    Ready to get Speedy
If Arenas bolts, Claxton may be replacement

Jorge Ortiz, Chronicle Staff Writer Saturday, July 19, 2003

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the Warriors can't retain free-agent point guard Gilbert Arenas, they'll look outside their current roster for a replacement, and it's expected to be Speedy.

That would be Speedy Claxton, a free agent who just won an NBA championship ring with the San Antonio Spurs. A league source said the Warriors likely would make a swift move for Claxton as soon as Arenas decides to sign an offer sheet elsewhere.

The Washington Wizards, whom Arenas visited this week, are considered the favorites to land last season's Most Improved Player with a deal starting around $8 million a year and possibly worth as much as $60 million over six years.

The Los Angeles Clippers were also thought to be making a late bid, and Arenas' agent, Dan Fegan, was expected to meet with both the Clippers and the Warriors on Friday in Southern California. It's not clear when Arenas will make his decision.

Golden State has virtually no hope of matching a lucrative offer for Arenas,

which would entail dumping close to $12 million in salaries. Because they're over the salary cap, the most the Warriors can offer is a deal starting at the $4.9 million midlevel exception.

Instead of taking the 15 days it is allotted to explore matching the offer, the club might move quickly and use part or all of the exception to sign Claxton, who is also being pursued by the Utah Jazz.

Claxton's agent, Walnut Creek-based Bill Duffy, confirmed a mutual interest between Claxton and the Warriors, should Arenas not return to Golden State.

"He'd be honored to play here," Duffy said. "He watched them closely this past season and he thinks they're a young, exciting, up-and-coming team."

Asked whether Claxton was the Warriors' top choice to replace Arenas, Duffy responded: "That's our understanding."

    The club declined to comment.

Claxton, 25, improved his lot with a terrific performance in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, when he took over for an ineffective Tony Parker and contributed 13 points and four assists in 23 minutes as the Spurs came back to secure the title-clinching victory.

The 5-foot-11 Claxton has been a backup in the past two seasons, after sitting out his first year in the league with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

He only averaged 5.8 points and 2.5 assists last season, when he played in only 30 games due to injuries, but believes he's capable of better production with more extended minutes.

"Speedy wants to show people he's ready to be a starter," said Duffy, adding he and the Warriors have not discussed contract terms.

The club is also on the market for a backup point guard, with Orlando's Darrell Armstrong emerging as a possibility.

Last year's backup, Earl Boykins, is also a free agent, and the team deems the other point guards on its roster more like third or fourth options.

The results of summer league play -- where the Warriors' entry went 1-6 with second-round picks Derrick Zimmerman and Steve Logan running the offense - - did nothing to change that perception.

Armstrong is 35 and coming off his worst season in the past five years, having averaged 9.4 points (on 40.9 percent shooting) and 3.9 assists a game. However, he's regarded as an exceptional athlete and leader. In addition, he's well known to Warriors coach Eric Musselman, a former assistant in Orlando.
