Some of these arguments just don't make sense to me. It's almost like some of you guys are out to get Artest.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Fletcher:</div><div class="quote_post">So your saying Artest should have sat there while this random guy just throws a beer in your face? I'm not saying it's good to fight but sometimes it just doesn't make sense not to.</div> THEY CANT DO THAT, baseball players get coins thrown at them... stuff like this happens.. i am in NO WAY saying the fan should not be arrested and punished.. but artest jumped the gun and attacked the WRONG GUY
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting StayingOccupied:</div><div class="quote_post">1.it all started with ron artest kicking ben wallace in the nuts witn 40seconds to go while they were winning by 15... 2.ron artest is a *****, and none of this would of happened if he could have taken a beer cup to the face, athletes HAVE to deal with this, its the only choice they have. 3. jackson should be suspended for hte remainder of the season, he was looking for a fight the whole time. 4. ben wallace should be suspended for 2 games for pushing ron artests face. 5. the guy ron artest attacked in the stands wasnt the guy that threw beer at him.. justify him now..</div> Athletes have to deal with this? WTF? They're human too, and I don't see a reason for anyone to throw beer into someone else's face. Jackson looking to start a fight? Wasn't everybody? Ben, Artest, Jackson, the fans; everyone was looking to start something, just a few individuals that did.
First order of business, alcohol SHOULD NOT be sold after halftime for now on, follow the NFL rules! Anyone who blames Artest for doing what he did is foolish. EVERYONE knows that if someone disrespected you by throwing something at you, if you are a man, then you would take action. I dont disagree that Artest should not play the rest of the season, but I also think that they need to review those tapes and fill up the Detroit jail cells with every fan that was involved. Us as fans should never do anything like that and Im ashamed to be a fan of the NBA. I would of loved to be next to that guy that poored his whole beer all over J Oneal, ooh boy. Im just so outraged at what happened tonight and those @ssh#$% Piston fans should never be allowed into any type of sporting event EVER again! As far as the Artest foul on Wallace, I think it was more of the frustration of Wallace and the Pistons getting there @ss kicked than Artest fouling him hard. Wallace definately started the whole ordeal and he should definately be suspended for an extended period of time. I just cant believe what happened. And one more time...I like alcohol and I like to drink casually, but I dont think alcohol should be allowed at a sporting event, EVER!
13) Should the NBA consider nearby neutral sites like Toledo, Louisville or Cincinnati for future Pistons-Pacers games? Wow if this happened it would be so great because Toledo is the city I live in.

This is going to be a bad thing for the NBA's reputation, I don't care how you look at it, casual fans are going to look at this and just shake their heads. There is no excuse for what happened and I am hoping that Stern can find a good way to make sure that something like this has little to no chance of happening again. That being said, I think that Ben Wallace is the guy that you need to make an example out of in all of this. He started the altercation by overreacting to something that is part of the game. The foul wasn't flagrant, it wasn't malicious, and I suggest that if Big Ben has a problem with inadvertant fouls in the course of a basketball game that he take up a non-contact sport like baseball. Honestly, no reason for him to push Artest the way that he did, it just shows that he's a very sore loser. As for the Pacers, the major guys that you have to look at are Steven Jackson and Ron Artest. When I first saw all of this going down, I couldn't help but hope that it would end without anything major, but when Artest jumped the scoring table, I knew that I wouldn't get what I was wishing for. The guy has been taking enough crap lately from the media for stupid bullshit all week and then this happens. Granted, he could have handled things a bit better, but I am willing to wager that most people here with short fuses like Artest has would do the same thing in the same situation. Then you have Steven Jackson who is really not involved in the fight and is trying to stick up for his teammate, but to a point where he is getting involved in something that he might be best staying out of almost completely. I commend him for sticking up for Artest, but I think that he crossed the line a little bit toward the end there when he jumped in the stands as well. Nevertheless, I expect to see him fined and suspended pretty heavily. Then you got the fans trying to egg all of the Pacers on into fistfights by throwing debris and pouring drinks on them. So when Jermaine O'Neal punched that one guy by the tunnel, I didn't feel sorry for the fan since he asked for it. Detroit fans labelled themselves tonight as cowards and cheap shot artists. They should be embarassed and I hope that the people that contributed to it where arrested...yes, they deserve to be arrested for that. Finally, I think that Artest and the Pacers handled the situation relatively well for the positions that they were put in. I can't imagine any team in the NBA not handling the situation similarly, but I could be wrong. Granted, I would have liked to see them not jump in the stands and assault fans, but the ones that got assaulted did instigate a fight. I just hope that Artest and Jackson don't get made out to be the badguys in all of this when really, you can place most - if not all - of the blame on Ben Wallace and the Piston fans.
Yes he did attack the wrong guy. You can't really blame him for that beause he didn't mean to. He had a beer in his face so I think it would impare his vision a bit. At least enough to get a bit confused.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TimmyGinobili:</div><div class="quote_post">Artest kicked him in the nuts??? I don't recall seeing that.</div> watch the replay of the foul... i dont think ben would get upset over "losing by 15" hes a professional, he's done that before.

He first went after the wrong person, but then when he got on that man the person who threw it started attacking Ron. Thats when Stephen went after him and so did Ron. There were some stuff that were not shown on tape, I read Artest puched a piston fan in the face on the court when the face started chasing Artest. Then Jermain hit him to get him from Artest.

whoa so much JBB members on... All in All Artest did what he had to do, Fans should know he has a short fuse, if anybody has a video clip of this or whatever please post it... i wanna see that dude that took out Fred Jones and how JO knocked out that one guy Oh Yeah and for the guy who said something about the Baseball.... the fans are WAY too high for the players to be climbing up the stairs for them to fight and i'm sure the players would be really pissed if they got beer thrown all over them too and start to brawl

Now detroit is gonna get a very bad wrap for sporting events. We were finally getting over the riots that happened 20 years ago too (even though jimmy kimmel brought them up over the summer again)... i guess detroit will never live down the small percentage of bad people here.
Artest did get the wrong guy, but its not like he's jumping into the stands to politely ask around for the guy that threw the beer.

I saw it as self defense true enough Ron Artest is a professional, but he was defending himself how would you feel if you just got 2 handed in the neck, try to relax then somebody chucks a cup of beer at you, not just beer but a CUP. Thats nearly 2 objects in one if I was in his situation I would have knocked the crap out of the person who did it too bump that. Now where Artest was wrong was 1. Fouling Wallace like that and attacking the wrong fan. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> That being said, I think that Ben Wallace is the guy that you need to make an example out of in all of this. Put you self in his shoes if a chair was about 4 inches from hitting you what would you do sit up and go to the fan and say "Nanny Nanny boo boo" I make over 6 mil a year? What if it would have hit you? You would have said it with a bloody mouth? I know he lost his cool or what ever but I dont blame him one bit.
peep this. go on down to your local court house & check out all the cases where the defendant admits they did it, but they didnt mean to or felt they were justified in their actions... when you go back for the sentencing phase you will now understand that "I didnt mean to" is not an excuse. Like I said previously, I dont care what you think your reasons are or if you think you are justified. We live in a place that has laws and they apply to everyone all of the time, including those times you may feel justified in breaking them. personally, I think any player involved in the fighting should get a 15 game suspension, if they went into the stands make it 25 games and artest (and perhaps Jackson and O'neal as well) should be suspended for the remainder of the season and fined 40% of their salary for the season. Any fan that threw anything should be charged with inciting a riot & if they threw a punch at a player, they should be arrested for assault. there are no excuses for anyone on any side

Last year the Dodgers brawled with Cubs fans, the Yankees relievers beat up a Fenway grounds keeper and fans jumped on the KC thirdbase coach at the white Sox game. Overall, I'd say this happens a lot more in baseball than basketball.
