I think gun control would cost them more in the long run. Somewhere between 50 and 100 million Americans are passionate about the right to own and operate firearms.

There's nothing Democrats could do that the Supreme Court wouldn't strike down in a three or four year period that would show better results than the harm it would cause to their reputation.

This is just not a very important hill to die on.

On the other hand, Medicare for all would be a huge success if the people who were setting it up and running it actually wanted it to be a success.

The problem Democrats have run into is that their legislation doesn't get anything done in a timely fashion. They count on the next administration to see it through...

You simply have to offer legislation that impacts people's lives positively. And you have to do it quickly so people are pissed if the next guy takes it away.

Run an anti-AI campaign. Focus on the billionaire CEOs not paying taxes, focus on the environmental and energy concerns, focus on the rights of creatives and consumers to safe and accurate models without stealing copyrighted art or presenting misinformation. Strict regulations on the internet, returning net neutrality and making the internet a utility for all. Everyone hates AI; it's a winner as an issue.

    Interesting idea. Good point.

I'm not sure if that pulls anybody back to the fold though. Nobody is refusing to vote Democrat because of their stance on AI. At least not yet, that I'm aware of...

It's cute that you all think we're still going to have free and fair elections.

The Department of Justice is "investigating" state election officials. Consider that Trump and his cult STILL insist he won the 2020 election and it was stolen from him. Look for replacement of honest officials with Trump loyalists.

Interesting concept I'm just not sure if it's personal enough for enough people yet. And by the time it gets there it might be just too late.

No, I just don't think it's a serious enough issue for enough people to be motivated by it yet.

I wasn't thinking about actually taking away guns. It would be more a case of common sense stuff -- more comprehensive background checks, gun ownership insurance, proof of proper handling and storage capabilities. I think there are a lot of passionate gun owners that wouldn't be bothered much by that once it was employed.

And the actual power of the Supreme Court is going to be put to the test at some point, if it hasn't been already. It's going to be hard for SCOTUS to diminish Congress's oversight and checks capabilities over the executive branch and still be effective in saying it has power over the executive branch, though. I think you're going to see that pushed hard at some point in this presidential term, where the court hands down a ruling Trump doesn't like and the administration just says "we don't care, we're doing it anyway."

There are a lot of gun owners who would support Democrats even with those suggestions. But those gun owners likely already support Democrats.

Those suggestions are preventing millions of voters from supporting Democrats in otherwise very winnable states like Texas (Beto?), Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, etc.

None of those suggestions (even all of them combined) would make as much of a difference in violent crime and murder rates as universal healthcare and universal education through college/trade school.

Anything further that impacts law abiding citizens is going to prevent millions of those voters from ever voting Democrat again.

However, if you simply say that we are no longer pushing gun control, rather focusing on just the social resolutions I believe you could get millions of those voters back in very critical states that supported Trump in 2024.

    I agree.

Makes me feel a tiny bit better about this country. Millions of us might vote for nazis, but at least we don't attend their concerts in vast numbers.
