That was a different market though. The cap went DOWN, not up, this summer. The fact that he still got $13.5 million per year is pretty crazy.
I dunno, man. That's about market rate this summer. Kelly Olynyk got a 4yr, 50 mil deal this summer. Ibaka got 3yrs, 65 mil. Millsap got 3 yrs, 90 mil. Amir Johnson got a 11 mil deal, ZBo got 2 yrs, 24 mil.
Not a fair comparison but regardless, it still feels like too much to pay for a back-up straight 5. Especially for a team that already has a young, soon to be maxed center on the roster.
With the exception of maybe Amir Johnson, all of those guys are better than Plumlee. In some cases, I'd say significantly better than Plumlee. I'm not a huge fan of Olynyk, but I think he has a much better offensive game than Plums. Millsap's contract is pretty gross... but he's a known commodity. Ibaka is still making money off of first few years in the league when he was actually an elite defender. Randolph is still a threat on offense.
Plumlee was so over-rated here. He's physically outmatched vs many centers in the league. He had a really tough time guarding, rebounding, and scoring against those bigger players. He does have very nice agility, which would be fine if he played PF but a team needs a big man unless you're the GSW. He has absolutely no jump shot and sucked at finishing inside. His offense was Chris Dudley/Joel Pryzbilla bad...of course, he's an excellent passer, but that's his only skill offensively. Overall, he was also a defensive liability. Our interior D was so much better with Nurk. I"m glad we aren't paying him that kind of dough. (though I'd certainly rather be paying him than Leonard
I figured that had to be a mistake or wishful thinking on his part, but I looked it up and Brooklyn actually made the playoffs both of his years there. I guess I forgot how bad the East was. Wrong. It went up $5M, it just didn't go up as much as originally forecasted.
He was in a blazers uniform and he WASN'T better than the average big. And we knew that. Damnit, BGD. You tried that so many times that when it actually has happened it isn't true.
Do people not think teams do any negotiating with agents? If they could've had him for less they would've had him for less. 13m sounds about right for Plumlee. Hell, if he stayed he probably could've gotten 15. I know that was my guess on the number back then.
If Crabbe was "worth" $17M/year, then Plums is underpaid at $14.5M/year. At least Plumlee knew what an assist was........
That people think he got grossly overpaid is more shocking to me than what he got paid. If that makes sense.
I think the consensus was that Plums was going to break the bank in Portland, based on his role and his play in Portland, so he needed to be traded. Then the consensus was that his role in Denver would not afford him the same level of contract going forward, that he might have commanded based on his play in Portland. I guess I agreed with both of those opinions. The reality is though that run of the mill back up big men are getting 10 million, so Plum's contract isn't terribly out of line. He's a hustle player, but he's not that good, IMO, or maybe I should say effective. I thought he was overrated in Portland by Portland fans. Maybe I was wrong. It's possible; I was wrong once last year.
I notice Plums got just a smidge more than his brother. I can't help but suspect that was a requirement in his negotiations
Plumlee would've gotten more if he hadn't been traded. People forget he was often our third best player and he was our MVP in the series against the Clippers. And his shotblocking was underrated. Some team would've offered him 16 to 18 million to be a starting center.
I'm really happy for Plumlee. The Nuggets got an awesome guy and a solid backup at the 5 who can cover at times if the need occurs due to injury. Right now it seems like the Nuggets have the center position pretty much sealed with a couple solid players.
