We're very unlikely to get either, but pretend that you're Cronin and you have to choose between them (say, you have the second pick and Jabari Smith went #1 and Jody tells you you have to pick one of them), which do you pick? Both seem to be divisive players on this board, so I'm curious.
I think the people that don't like Chet are scared because there's no comparable NBA player. I don't like Banchero because there's a ton of comparable NBA players and about the best is Tobias Harris.
Pokusevski was 3 rebounds short of a triple double. 11 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds. I think that kind of play is what people are looking for from Chet Holmgren. A guy who can make a difference with and without the ball.
Paolo is the safer bet would will be able to contribute more immediately. Not as good on defense, but can score and facilitate. Holmgren has the higher ceiling....but also the lower floor. Cronin indicated early on, he will take a chance on the highest potential. It would be very interesting to see what Joe's choice would be. I think Jabari might be the best fit of the '3' FWIW.
i agree with your conclusion but don't agree that Paolo is the safer bet. I think that's Chet. He's gotta very high floor as a rim protector and pick and pop big even if he never puts on strength. Paolo is a lot more dynamic with the ball and if he figures out his defense, he could be a ridiculous matchup problem.
Another reason I don't like Banchero: he needs the ball to be useful. Scoring is so much more important in the college game. He just screams average NBA player to me. Plus, does his game work with Chauncey's game plan? If he was going to be a franchise player then of course it wouldn't matter, but he isn't. Holmgren could not even see the ball on offense and be the best +/- guy on the team.
You're just trying to win me over with a foreign player. First of all, Paulo would kill for Scola's low-post skills. Scola may have had the best post skills ever. He fucking had to have because he may also have been the only 6'9" player in NBA history who couldn't dunk. No, I think Paolo's most flattering comp is a big Carmelo. But give me a big Kirilenko (who can also hit threes) over that any time. [Edit: I see @illmatic99 thought you meant Holmgren. But that's an even worse comparison than Banchero - so which DID you mean?]
I wouldn't draft Chet I would find his highest bidder and sell him off if Jabari and Paolo were already taken. Chet and Nurk are a bad fit defensively because both guys move their feet slowly, not for an old school big but definitely to play together in today's game. So yeah, we need a modern PF to go with Nurk and although Chet stretches the floor on offense his defensive game is predicated on length and timing which would be fine with an ultra athletic C or a really solid athlete and strong PF. Chet has a really interesting set of skills, talents and big time deficits. Jabari is my first choice and Paolo is the only other choice I would make and then I'd shop our pick.
