Right back at ya, Your Highness. I realize you live in Kansas, and probably very well-travelled, and likely get your world-view from local folks like the Wizard of OZ, but there is nothing in any of these avatars that a normal person with a healthy outlook on life would find offensive. This isn't the 1700's and we don't burn witches anymore. This is all about behavior control and censorship in order to make others follow your own personal morality code, and your denials of this are childishly ridiculous when one considers YOUR avatar. None of these avatars are forbidden on BBF by the way, as they are a much less prudish site than this one. They just feel cuss-words reflect a mind with low conversational values, and they're correct on that. If a few homophobes or slackers who cheat their employers are uncomfortable here then they should go away. Or they could invest the 30 seconds it takes to turn off avatars. Or they could stop ignoring their children and stop stealing from their employers. Few people disgust me more than thieves and child-abusers. It's not like there's any shortage of appropriate places for them to post, and they've made it clear they don't fit in here anyway. Hard to believe a fourth board exodus is in the making but that's what happens when people refuse to learn from past mistakes.
Ok drama queen...this argument isnt in the same ballpark as bbf. If there is any "exodus" over this issue I think it will just be you
I just re-read the entire thread and the original poster, a Bulls fan from MO, is the only poster for censorship of avatars. All other posters either pointed out how he could block them (he refused, which proves it's all about him forcing his warped morality on others) or made fun of his prudishness, which does seem pretty comical for a supposed "19 year old man". So why are Denny Crane and Anima preparing to use "primetime tv" (controlled by the FCC specifically to protect preteens) as a guideline for a board whose posters are all adults? We're on the "Road to Pathetic" once again.
We have no rule about avatars, but when people complain about them, we rightly should consider the complaints and look for the way to make the most people happy. That people are saying they won't browse the site in certain venues is not a good thing. I don't see that people are going to see a cuss word from across the room, but they don't have to be too far away to see the avatars. It's written in our rules that we want the site to be work safe. To this end, we mark threads and videos as NSFW so people don't end up clicking on them and getting in trouble at work or school. We don't forbid them, though, and there is a reasonable fix for those. I don't think many of us want to see this site turn into a porn site. It's a sports site.
Yeah, it's the exact same arguement. 1 single whiner suddenly gets a couple of Mods to silence everyone who offends his personal moral code. Arguments ensue, insults are thrown, posters banned, other posters leave, board dies. I've seen it happen 4 times in 6 years now, always to the disbelief of longtime posters like yourself. You clearly, as usual, underestimate Blazers Fans. It's us against the world baby! I've never promoted leaving a board, and am not doing so now. I was one of the last to leave BBF but with only mgb there to talk to it got a bit lonely. I don't like doing it as it's a minor hassle, and I'm a pretty lazy guy by nature. I'm trying to nip it in the bud before it gets to that point because once that ball gets rolling you can read the writing on the wall. I'm just pointing out the obvious fact that most people come here to express themselves openly without being babysat and coddled by schoolmarms. Closing threads, banning members, censoring speech or censoring avatars kills message boards. It's all the same slippery slope and there's nothing unique on any message board that can't be duplicated immediately on another message board.
Very diplomatic of you to use the word many instead of any. Does anyone actually want hardcore porn in their avatars and signatures? Wouldn't that just be creepy?
When you say That people are saying they won't browse the site in certain venues is not a good thing I have to disagree. It's a great thing for all of us as human beings and Americans if people at work actually work, and if parents with children in the room actually spend that time with their children. I'm sick and tired of being punished by a failing economy and the eventual crimes of delinquent, uneducated children who have never known love and guidance. Rather than whining, these posters need to log off, man up, and carry their weight. The real Denny Crane would agree with me.
Nobody has done anything remotely like that, and obviously nobody ever will. We don't need to be policed because as you point out nobody wants hardcore porn here. But we don't want it to be all My Little Pony either. The first sign you have a problem is when you're trying to prevent a problem that doesn't exist.
Well the site should be work safe (at least), shouldn't it? And I don't mean every thread, but if I am browsing a respectable thread, I shouldn't have to hide anything from a passerby, right? Like a jpeg or a gif of a big wet ass in a thong?
Why would you be on here when you're getting paid to be working? Why would you be wearing out your employer's computer that he paid for? Why would you want your employer's customers to see his workers goofing off on sports sites when they should be working to help the customer? Why would you want your co-workers to see you not carrying your weight at work? Is personal responsibility a thing of the past?
Exactly. It has nothing about forcing morality on others. It's about decency. I could care less if the hardest core porn was posted on this site, as long as it was marked NSFW and I could avoid it. I don't have a problem with porn, hardcore or softcore. I just have a problem of having to move through it in a thread about basketball on a sports site. And please don't use your ridiculous work or parent argument. I don't have a kid, and I don't go on the site while I'm at work. If I'm doing homework in a computer lab, having various websites open is something I do. Does the ability to see a woman in a thong or a guy's ass on every page really make this site worth going to for you?
Wow, you have be down soooo well. I am sure you can immediately tell everything about a person just based on their location. But just in case you can't there's a few things you should know, like I am a buddhist, I am very well educated, I am one of the most socially liberal people you will ever met, and I couldn't care less if I see two people fucking in the street. However, this site isn't about me, it's about ALL the posters who post here and making them feel comfortable.
You are obviously lying, as it has been explained in great detail how simple it is for you to block avatars. We know that from the many, many times you have thought it cute to post porn links in your posts (including this thread). Since you can't follow simple directions on how to block avatars maybe you shouldn't be here when you're supposed to be studying. Again, take a little personal responsibility. The absence of censorship and control freaks makes this site worth going to for me. I can't quite figure out why you occasionally drop by.
If that were true this thread would have ended pages ago with a polite "Sorry Bulls fan, we don't censure avatars because it's obvious most posters here prefer it that way. You can block them as we have considerately provided that option for you". Rather than the obvious solution of don't fix it 'cause it ain't broken, you want to control/upset many regular posters to please one occasional poster. Being a Buddhist would strongly suggest that you are neither well-educated nor socially liberal, but I am quite surprised to hear people fuck in the street in Kansas.
Haha. I thought that someone was just telling me two weeks ago that the exodus had already started. I can't keep all the alleged exoduses straight... Ed O.
Actually, some of the more educated and liberal posters here are Buddhists, Minstrel for example (sorry if I outed you!). There are also several very well educated and liberal people in my real life who are also Buddhists, including my mentor. It wasn't just one person that complained though, we were having this discussion on the staff board long before it was brought here by a regular poster because some mods complained and an admin now refuses to visit the site while he's at work because of curtain avatars. This also isn't a Blazers board only issue, but a site wide issue. We were eventually going to come up with avatar guidelines, this thread just precipitated the issue.
