The Port of Portland is a cash cow that has no real fealty to the City of Portland. They can (and do) pretty much however they see fit. Their main offices (located within the airport parking structure) are an absolute Taj Mahal inside. They apparently have no budget issues like other so called public entities. If they want something, they pretty much get it with a minimum of hassle or sweat. Must be nice.....
It's the old comedy bit of "no one smiles going into an airport, but everyone smiles coming out." The only thing most travelers want to do is to just leave that damn place, no matter how nice it is. I guess it's great that these renovations aren't costing the taxpayers any money, and if it's a use it or lose it situation, than by all means. When I fly in to PDX (before the construction) it was nice to be able to move around so quickly and leave, I don't want to be there a minute longer than I have to be, coming or going and so very rarely care about spending a dime on food/drinks or whatever. I understand wanting to be a nicer airport if they are a hub and people have a choice of where to go, but man the locations airport is so far down on the list of things to care about, that I'm with Calvin on this one, it isn't close to being a deciding factor. Different strokes, for different folks though.
I wish they had more spots people had to do some walking. As long as shuttles are available for people with disabilities. The rest of us could use the walk to shed a few pounds here and there.
There are plenty of places to get your steps in, just get me out of the airport as fast as possible and I'll be a happy camper.
Is there anything in these upgrades addressing the stealing of catalytic converters in airport parking lots?
Straight from the mouth of one of the attendants. “There was a problem for a week or two. 3-4 cats got stolen. We clamped down hard and are keeping a lookout. Nobody has lost one for quite some time”. This is what my neighbor who works there told me about this issue about a week ago when I asked if it was safe to park there.
