For the past 13 of my 16 years refereeing, I've refereed 400-450 games a year. I've cut that in half so far this season and it's been the BEST thing EVER. There's nothing like coaching your kid and NOT being the head coach. All I get to do is work with kids. No worries about PT, complaining parents, designing practices, coordinating EVERYTHING... Nope. Just teaching kids fundamentals. Watching light bulbs go off and kids gain confidence is really rewarding. Then they reward us by playing so hard, listening, and winning. What a great day. Way to start 2018 off right!!
Congrats man! Most fun I had was the fall of the NBA lockout. Freed me up to coach my son’s 6th grade team. Most fun I’ve had......helping those kids. That year I swear was the best he ever played to unfortunately. Keep up the good work.
dv: When my kid was in grammar school sports, I involved myself in Basketball and Baseball coaching. I remember this one ref no had no personality and all the kids disliked him. In fact, he was pathetic and called fouls on his mood. I like your approach!
I coached grade school and middle school levels for a couple of years here....was a gas! Early hoops coaching is where good habits start...and it's really rewarding. Hardest part of it was soccer mom parents though...don't miss that. If your not a coach.....don't coach from the stands please
From left to right: #13 with the goggles is my son Osias. #31 with the Frohawk is Major. That's Orlando William's son. #2 with the buzz cut and cheesy smile is Nēko. #4 with the Lew Alcindor afro is Jeremiah. #23 is my best friend and the head coach's son Elijah. #1 is Sean. Footballer. Fastest kid on the team. He'll eventually run like a 4.4 40. That kid can FLY. He literally can teleport. I've seen it with my own eyes. #5 hanging on him is Baylor. They're Thing #1 & Thing#2. #22 behind the Things is my son's best friend Nick. I call him Slick. #15 with his arms in the air is London. The head coach is my best friend. #23 might as well be my nephew. I went to high school with Jeremiah's dad and I've known Orlando for decades. I'm GREAT friends with Osias' bestie's dad. I've known him since our sons were in kindergarten together. Nēko's dad coaches our 6th graders. Another guy I've known since I was 12 has his son on our 3rd grade team. The environment is awesome. Most of the parents I've known for decades and we all get along. They let us be as hard as we need to be on the kids by holding them accountable for their responsibilities. It's just so perfect.
Holy shit you shoulda saw the first goggles I bought. Had to send those MFs back and do more research. I made a mistake. RoboTron ass goggles. These here:
