On if Jody has told Olshey to dodge the tax

No. Allen knew what she was getting into when she signed off on the Whiteside trade this summer, which pushed the payroll to the highest in the league (after the Kings trade, the Blazers no longer hold that distinction).

As stated above, if they can get out of the tax, they will do it, but there is no edict. The front office is mindful of the repeater-tax penalties that loom after next season, when the fat extensions for Lillard and CJ McCollum kick in, but Allen has consistently shown she is committed to the Blazers and willing to pay the tax. Of course, eventually, that financial commitment will have to result in victories, but she understands that sometimes, seasons are derailed by injuries.

He also said he’s been told Portland will not consider trading their pick unless it’s for a top piece. They want to keep their assets, and they value the draft.

If dipping the tax isn’t a priority then I hope Covington is a target as I think Portland would have an advantage by being able/willing to take on Dieng.

Not a trade but I'd take a chance on Patton for sure.

    Worth a look?

As a result of the trade, Dallas will waive Justin Patton.

Okay I am confused the couple sites I checked shows Patton as being on OKC? How is Dallas waiving him?

OKC traded him to Dallas for Isiah Roby and then Dallas waived him.

Sure. Within a few days posters will complain about why he isn't playing and then after a week he will be our next all star. It seems to be what this forum does with end of the bench players. :evilfire:

Ya because this is the type of player Dame needs in his prime years.

Another target: Hayward. Boston reached out on Drummond and evidently backed off after hearing the asking price, presumably a first. Makes sense since he could easily leave in the summer.

Hayward would’ve almost assuredly been in that deal. How about Whiteside and Hezonja for Hayward and Poirier

If Allen is truly not as bothered by paying the tax, may as well.

I know the gist of what Quck said, and generally, I'm not buying it at all....unless of course he actually interviewed Jody Allen and she told him what she's thinking

don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Whiteside won't be traded. I just think that Quick is too casual in his assumption that luxury tax isn't a major part of JA's calculations right now.

my hunch is if Whiteside is traded, the returning contract(s) won't add anywhere close to Whiteside's salary next season. I mentioned to Hoopjock, a couple of times, I anticipated one returning contract in exchange for either Bazemore or Whiteside to be in the 8-13M range range next year, and that's exactly what Ariza's is. That trade preserves all kinds of options for Portland after the season and next year. They can guarantee his salary, preserving the trade ballast it represents, sign a full MLE player, AND still use the 7M TPE and remain under the tax line. Adding more salary in a trade for Whiteside would mean that they'd have a lot of trouble signing a MLE player and using the TPE without going well over the tax line....unless they waived Ariza before July

it's possible JA has told Olshey it's do or die this trade deadline...that she'll accept paying tax next season in one final hurrah for the Dame/CJ team, but that's the last tax season....no repeater tax the following 2 seasons

Here’s what quick said re Whiteside

Do you think Hassan (Whiteside) will end up getting traded to get under the tax?

Would the Blazers like to get under the tax? Yes.
Is Olshey consumed with, or ordered to do so? No.

Will Olshey move Whiteside? If it nets a player who fits into the Blazers’ future, yes. But many of the players who would fit the Blazers’ needs and make the type of money that would make a Whiteside deal work are either hurt (Otto Porter Jr., Blake Griffin), entering the twilight of his career (LaMarcus Aldridge), or have undesirable contracts (Kevin Love, Thaddeus Young).

So in other words, I don’t believe Olshey is robo-calling each team trying to unload Whiteside. But he will certainly entertain offers. I would put Whiteside’s chances of staying in Portland at 50/50 right now.

Olshey is just waiting for the Cavs to give a little more or drop the asking price on Love.
