I'm really not trying to be rigid regarding humor. I realize it can happen in any thread, but good god, is it so wrong to want it out of threads without humor? Is it so wrong to find posts that are just "+1" annoying and pointless? Sue me for wanting slightly stricter guidelines.
You guys aren't going to start another huge argument again right? I was just starting to get used to this place again with a lot of the JBB guys returning.
I'm not trying to start any arguments whatsoever, I'm just stating that I think some of the ways that people post aren't necessary and we at least need some type of guideline regarding posting.
We've tried hard to implement features to encourage people to write with excellence - like blogs and writer's central. The message board and threads aren't particularly where we care so much about people making short posts, no matter what they contain. The threads are there for discussion, and people do say short things in conversation. A post of just "+1" is conversational - the poster is saying he particularly agrees with the post he is commenting on. It's part of the message board lexicon, I don't see the problem with it. Same thing with an LOL post- the post they're responding to is one that I expect the poster was trying to amuse people. The LOL is feedback. As far as post padding goes, there's no benefit to doing it. It's a waste of time, so I seriously doubt anyone's making that kind of effort. If they are doing so and not contributing, it violates the very first rule of the site, which is that we simply ask that people have honorable intentions when they post (to be part of the community, to contribute, to care). Over the course of months that we've been online, I'm quite proud of our members and what they do. We're lax in many ways compared to other boards, people are quite free to abuse it, but we don't really see much abuse. I think we all, as members, get to know one another far better for the way we do things - it makes S2 a fine place to hang.
See, I do see where you're coming from here Denny, and I agree with you on a number of matters. I do like coming here. Even as a former JBB guy, I've really gotten accustomed to this place and I really have grown to like it a lot, even though I voiced plenty of displeasure during the rough periods after the merger. However, don't get me wrong, as a whole, I think the community is terrific. I'd say at least 90% of the posts are worthwhile. But, I just don't see a reason why we have to have posts like "+1" and "LOL" around. The "LOL" is acceptable to an extent, cause if something's funny, I'm ok with people posting that. The "+1" is pointless though. If you agree with it, actually say something. Make a productive post about why you agree with it, don't just say "+1". Putting "+1" is just a cop-out way of saying "I really have nothing to say in this thread but want post anyways, so...+1". It's pointless. If you agree, say why or say nothing at all. I realize I may have a bit harsher view of this situation, but you must understand that the community I was in before this was MUCH stricter than S2. Now again, don't get me wrong, 90% of the time, I'm cool with the way people post. And again, I love the fact that this place is a little more relaxed in terms of what you can and cannot get away with in terms of posting. I just really do think we need to cut out on certain things. I realize you're trying to get the casual people here, but if someone looking for a place where he can have a serious or mature sports discussion comes in and sees a bunch of "+1" or "LOL" posts, do you think he'll want to register as much? So, keep the relaxed part of it, I just ask that the post be more than one word or more than the usage of messenger lingo.
I'm all for restricting post padding. After all, my value of my posts will be diluted by the percentage of what I'll refer to as "girlie-posts." How will I be able to exchange my posts for the valuable prizes and monetary awards that were promised me. Stop the madness--fight the girlie-posts and those that create them!

I think you have to approach short posts with some perspective. Speaking for myself sometimes I'll use a +1 or LOL or whatever because it's my initial response to a subject. Whether I'm restricted by time or don't have an explanation at the time to elaborate the emotion or viewpoint. I do I try to go back and respond though. I don't think what Oscar did was wrong. He specifically told CPAW to look and they have some inside joke about Brook Lopez. Maybe a PM would have been useful, but the topic can hopefully evolve into a nice discussion about the upcoming draft. My two cents.</div> <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Big Frame @ Feb 14 2008, 10:35 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>If I write LOL, would someone get mad at me?</div> Well it's one thing to allow a "LOL" or "+1" Every once in a while, but it seriously doesn't matter if one almost becomes addicted to posting like that? Yeah sure this is an overall great site, but seeing the same shit everyday without even a little suggestion or wrist slap, is what I disagree with. I'm sure we've all had our SPAM moments, but some members are at a ridiculous level.

There is one poster I have in my mind that goes a little overboard, but at the same time, that has transformed into humor amongst all of our active posters in that section - so it really doesn't bother me like it did before. I think our posters are terrific, and I think everybody has been great as of late. The NBA activity has skyrocketed over the past month or two, after a relatively dead stretch, and I love it. Sure, there are a few posts that may be a tad unnecessary or don't add much insight - but this is a forum that wants to build, and has built, a comfortable community feel. I don't see a real problem here.
My take on it, still, is that a message board functions in several ways. It's there for collaboration and communication. Two keys ways it operates are asynchronous and synchronous. Asynchronous is where you go post something and come back in 3 days and maybe there's a reply from 2 days ago. Synchronous is where you and 15 other posters are in a thread and it becomes something like a chat room. What people do while chatting may look "bad" if you come back and read the thread a few days later, but that's the nature of the beast. When in "discussion" mode, the talk between people goes beyond a single thread. A "+1" post in one thread is often a form of encouragement for what's gone on in other threads. Sports, and particularly a team, are a good way for people to bond. I grew up in Chicago as a fan of the teams there, and no matter where I go, I'm still a fan. Where I live now, there aren't many Chicago team fans, so I find a place like S2's Bulls forum a great place to connect with other fans. I'm interested in interesting discussion, but I also don't mind talking about how Chicago has the best Pizza and Ribs. I see the same qualities in the way the Nets forum works. These guys really know each other well, often meet in person, go to games together, etc., yet they still hang here and talk. I'm inclined to let them have fun the way they see fit, rather than instituting rules about why we are going to censor their content. I'm all in favor of using S2's collaboration technologies for building a writing staff and the ultimate/best content on the 'net. People seem to take writer's central quite seriously, and we have some terrific blogs. The rules are there for the writing team, and I'm not at all debating how that's being done. There are supposed to be rules and censorship/editing when you are writing "professional" quality articles. But they're not posts. I've said my piece, and I'm not at all saying "this is the way it's going to be, I'm putting my foot down" or anything like that. Instituting rules and applying them is a major team effort that everyone would have to buy in on, regardless of my personal beliefs. The only thing that would piss me off is if we're driving people away by being "fascist" about it.

Post padding was just one guess, I certainly don't care WHY, but that it is not discouraged eventually. I understand if you're a newbie and have been here less than six months, but I am tired of reading the Laker forum and seeing specific members get away with torture (that's a hyperbole for the smartasses out there). Go soft on the new members, but once one has more experience around here, then bring up the issue. Hawksfan for example, has been registered almost a year.
^^^ LOL +1 I just looked through the Lakers forum and I don't see anything in the most recent 15 threads that I would imagine anyone finds objectionable.

LOL at you Denny. Funny guy. I think Kobe23 has done too many +1 posts, and some other pointless crap. There I said it, even Mamba has called him out a couple of times. Analyze his recent posts alone and he is what I was referring to. Although offhand I have no clue how long he's been here. So I'd adjust my opinion of him accordingly (meaning, I would want to go soft on him in order to get him hooked on this site if he hasn't been here long).

I don't mind the occasional "LOL"s (which you'll never catch me saying), but I'd love to see things come with that (unless it's in the humor board). What I do mind are posts like OMG!! CARTAR CARRIEZ DIS TEAMMMMM!!! WIDOUT HEEM, WE SUCKK111! Honestly, can't we just rephrase that into: Hmm, without Carter, our team hasn't been doing well, when compared to us with him. You might think the first example is hyperbole, but it really isn't. It's also what drove some of us away from BBF in the first place.
