Sweatshops. An underground economy. Extortion. People dying in the desert trying to sneak in here. A large segment of workers in this country not paying taxes yet using services. Americans losing jobs because illegals will work more cheaply. Legal immigration being restricted because of illegal immigration. Drug gangs using illegal immigrants as mules. Other than that, no problem.
There's no reason to restrict legal immigration. Those other things should be (and likely are) unlawful. If you work in the USA, you're supposed to pay taxes; if you pay taxes, you're paying for the services. People at least pay sales tax and gasoline tax and so on. If we're giving these people social security, then it's something of a big deal. We have minimum wage laws, so it would seem to be the employers who are really breaking the laws that matter. If we allowed free transit across our borders, then nobody could be used as mules. If these people are doctors and lawyers, then doctors and lawyers should be afraid of losing their jobs?
Yeah, amnesty worked great the last time we tried it. Then again, you're in favor of bringing back the policies of the Carter Administration, so I guess you have a whole Back to the Future theme going on.
Not just the Carter administration, but the Roosevelt administration. It's back to the future, great-grandpa version. In any case, I wasn't suggesting amnesty. I was suggesting something more radical - treating aliens the exactly the same as everyone else, aside from getting to vote and issuing passports. barfo
