Let me put it this way, on a team that matters, Sather is one of the worst GM's in sports...period end of story. You are right, you can find terrible teams in cities where no on cares, that have worse GM's. But this is NY, so considering the context hands down he is one of the worst GM's in sports dump. Cannot be debated. I ask all the time, but never get an answer from you. Name me another GM that has been in their role for 14 + years and has ZERO titles. ZERO finals trips. ONE conference finals trip. And MANY 1st round exits and no playoffs at all. Give me the GM in pro sports that has that resume today dump over 14 + years. Go...
Perhaps that is Sather's strategy this year. Watching the game last night still leaves me baffled why Sather let Jagr walk.
Yes, it can be debated. You are rating him as a GM based on titles. Not based off of winning seasons. He's had 8 winning seasons here and 4 losing seasons here. If you look at the team records the previous three seasons in a row before he got here, they were awful. He's had a winning record 8 seasons in a row here now. Can you give me a list of GM's in sports with a salary cap and no financial advantages that haven't drafted in the top 3 that have 8 winning seasons in a row? Name me one that doesn't have a top 3 draft pick? You're just mad because the Rangers haven't won the cup with Sather as a GM. What you can't grasp in that head of yours is that it will be almost impossible for them to do that unless they tank a couple of seasons. The history of the NHL proves that. Why did the Kings win the cup? Because they drafted Drew Doughty with the second overall pick and he was amazing that cup run. Without him, they aren't winning crap. It wouldn't matter how Quick or Kopitar played. Doughty is the rock that holds that team together. You can't accept the fact that almost all GM's win titles that draft top 3 franchise players.
I am done with this nonsense dump. You are so comical sometimes it hurts. YES Sather has done a great job as the Rangers GM. YES I am saying it is all about titles. We have 10 ECF trips and 5 SCF trips, but just can't win that title, so yes that is what I am saying. Seriously dump, you have major issues when it comes to be honest about Sather and the Rangers. You are the kind of guy who likes what he likes, and doesn't like what he doesn't like, and you won't let facts get in the way. By ANY logical measure Sather has been an outright DISASTER here. The man has ZERO finals trips...not titles but finals trips. The man has ONE ECF trip. Not titles but ECF trips. I know though, he has stacked this team with good young players right? I don't care what the results are because we have good young players right? Well to validate and count that in Sather's favor WE ACTUALLY NEED TO WIN GAMES AND GO FAR DUMP. This is a results business, not a I like the kids who cares if we have results or not business. It is comical with you man. When you think a guy like Sather has been anything but a disaster as the GM of this franchise we have nothing else to say to each other. You and the other 2 people who feel this way should hang out. I'll pay for the drinks.
Dump is a little too caught up on the whole tanking and getting Top 3 picks or you can't win the Cup. However, let's not forget that Nash is a 1st overall draft pick still in his prime.
Let us not forget that Nash was not healthy the entire playoffs series last year and it killed this team. These other top draft picks have gone through cup runs completely healthy for most of it. Though, Toews was banged up badly towards the end of the finals.
The Rangers need that one player, that when on the ice, makes everybody he plays with that much better. Yes, there are times when Sather is able to get the big name free agent, but if you don't have the other parts needed, those players can go to waste. Build a team that is good at both ends of the ice.
sather is in a very tough job. you can't tank seasons at MSG. we are always competitive but never quite good enough. we lack that franchise player that is much easier to find when drafting 1 -5 slot. given our drafting positions and the fact we are coming off 3 successful seasons, overall I would grade him about 7 out of 10 as a GM. Not great, but no where near some of the comments calling him the worst GM in sports, that's absurd.
You know we are in bad shape as an organization when making the 3rd round ONCE (not winning titles or even making it to the title round...both of which are HUGE 0's) in 14 + years earns you a 7 out of a 10 from some fans. Just wow....
No team hangs a banner for a 'winning season'....and just because you have a top 3 draft pick on your roster doesn't make you a cup contender. Trying to make it as simple as that is idiotic. Sather has been average as a GM, no better. His ability to trade away the dead weight players makes up for the horrific free agent signings that have dominated his tenure here. And as far as having a young team as opposed to an older, veteran team...what difference does it make when you aren't winning championships (Stanley Cup or otherwise).
Agree with that. Gaborik was a top-3 pick as well, but we didn't win anything with him, either. Over his total tenure in NY Sather has been below average but at least the farm system has become very strong and that will be helpful as we go forward, whether it be on the ice or as trade assets to acquire impact players. I just wish Sather would get off his rear end and get that impact player we so badly need.
The facts don't lie. The majority of teams winning cups have tanked 2-3 seasons. It's a fact and can't be disputed.
That 2003 draft miss is the gift that keeps on giving. It's the only draft i can think of in recent memory where you could get a top-6 forward or better after the first 10 picks. Brown, Parise, Getzlaf, Perry, Kesler and M. Richards were all picked after Jessiman. Every other year there seems to be a deep decline after the first 5-10 picks.
Pack won 4-3. Lindberg with 1 G 1 A, Kristo with his 6th goal of the season. McIlrath was a +2 in the game.
Duclair scored 4 goals last night against one of the better teams in the Quebec league. A natural hat trick in the third period and then added an empty netter. He now has 14 goals, 6 assists in 14 games and his team is not really that good from what I've heard. That looks early on like it might be a promising pick. Second in the league in goals. 14th in the league in scoring and he's played less games than most everybody ahead of him.
Kristo had 1 G 2 A last night. He now has 12 points in 10 games. He should get the call sometime this year if he keeps it up. Fast had 2 A. Lindberg had 1 G. Allen had 1 G and 1 A. McIllrath picked up an A.
McIlrath scored his 3rd goal of the season last night in a 3-2 OT loss. He had no goals last year. This year in 11 games he has 3 goals and 2 assists. Interesting.
Kristo scored his 8th of the year. From what I've heard it's turnovers and his defensive game that will keep him down there until it improves. The offense is certainly there.
