My guess is that it's more of a practice thang, at least it makes sense if it is: Team 1: starters Team 2: Uncle Festus Davis ET Crabbe Shabazz Team 3: Quarterman Pat Jake the Snake Vonleh Biebs i.e. it's clear from a practice squad POV that we needed to keep a PG.
He needs work on his defense but also thought he would be cut when I seen him live early in the season. Must be this year Montero so lets give him chance to see if he grows.
I seriously thought it was Jerret' s spot for the taking, but it makes sense from two angles. Cost and need. He's cheaper and he calcifies the point guard spot...now there are backups for the backups for the backups at every spot....from what I have seen of him, he is better than Montero, but then again who isn't.
Everyone in this thread is acting like this is ho-hum. This is shocking. Out of 7 preseason games, Quarterman played in only 3 games for 16 minutes. Stiemsma and Jerrett played in 4 games for 30 and 35 minutes. Even Layman played in 6 games. http://www.cbssports.com/nba/teams/stats/POR/portland-trail-blazers Q: Why did tricky Stotts hide this dark horse candidate like a magician, then poof, Quarterman made the team, appearing out of thin air? A: Stotts blindsided other teams, who have not seen Quarterman in action. Now, Stotts can save him for the 4th quarter and pull out wins like a rabbit out of a hat.
A2: This will grease the wheels for a trade at the Midseason Trade Deadline. Leonard alone wouldn't get us DeMarcus Cousins, but with Quarterman we have a fighting chance. A3: This will rev up ticket sales for my D-League threads. Instead of the excitement to see only LayMan, the blistering "manly -man duo" of LayMan and QuarterMan will pull posters each night from the Blazer game thread into my game thread.
NO and Stotts have been vocal about trying to showcase guys they are not keeping, to give them a chance to show themselves for other teams. To me I think the decision was made long ago and that's why Tim sat and was not played. I/m thinking during practice he showed enough for the team to know we need him for the season at least for practice sake. Thats why Jarrett got more burn. Even Steissma. We did this with Cliff too.
The Bulls just waived Spencer Dinwiddie - he's got to be better than Quarterman if you want a big PG: Here's how he did in preseason. Presumably they waived him because they acquired Michael Carter-Williams.
Here's a little bit more on why they might have kept him; although also points out he is still not on a guaranteed contract so he might not be staying. “He’s a young player who has good upside,” said Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts of Quarterman. “I think he has a good basketball IQ, he’s competitive. He really helps us from a roster management standpoint in practice taking the load off of Dame (Lillard) and CJ (McCollum). Shabazz (Napier) obviously had a very good preseason, but it allows us to have Dame and CJ on the same team in practice without one guys having to always be the point guard.” http://www.nba.com/blazers/forwardcenter/quarterman-brings-right-combination-15th-roster-spot
The first quote is the most nondescript ever. The whole roster management thing is what I figured must be the case (see previous post). Bottom line, they wanted to keep a PG for practice purposes. The fact that he makes a smidge less than the other guys put him over the top. i.e. it wasn't anything in particular that Quarterman did to get the spot over the other guys - this was not a Robert Pack situation.
