I know it's a really good sign man! It means his camp is confident enough that his injuries are behind him.
At the end of this year, (assuming Greg isn't an MVP, in which case we could offer him more), we can offer Greg 5yr/$85.5M. Other teams signing him can either offer 4/$61.9 max (if they're 14.5M under the cap) or the max MLE, 4/$20.45M.
Here's hoping that GO forces us to max his ass out! Good luck big fella, prove all the naysayers wrong and earn that max contract!
If he plays well, the Blazers need to extend him during the season. If he refuses to do that, I think the Blazers need to trade him by the deadline. You can't wait until next summer to see how it plays out IMHO.
no freaking way he leaves money like that on the table and whats the word on if he can still negotiate and extension during the season? i believe he can, or used to be able to at least
I recommend going through and reading the various Analyses of the Oden situation written over the last two years on Blazersedge. This was the worst case scenario for keeping Greg.
You would think he can, now that I think about it. It's like Melo last season, Howard and Paul this season. They can sign and trade; which means contracts can be negotiated during the season.
Good point. I still think it's too much of a risk to wait until the summer. I see that Tyson Chandler just got an offer for $60 million over 4 years. If greg can stay healthy, he can can break the bank.
This is a pretty astute comment. If Oden stays healthy, the fans will love him. He should want to stay in my opinion and help build a really good team. If he decides to leave at that point, he was never really going to stay anyway. If he is injured or plays like crap, then he will leave. The QO is not a bad deal in this case.
No the worst case sceanario would have been to sign him to 5 more years and then he gets hurt again this season. Or that another team would have out bid us this year for him. This is not a bad scenario for Portland. Like I said before, if he plays he will be happy and he will be more inclined to re-sign. If he does not play...........then he is either off our books forever or he re-signs at a very low amount. (Which I doubt would happen)
Yesterday, Steve Kerr was on Bill Simmons podcast, and Bill asked Steve if he were still in charge of the Suns, and he could get Oden with a 3 year 30 million dollar contract, would he do it. Steve's response "in a heartbeat!"
IMO, this is good for both Greg and the Blazers. He's taking a risk that he will stay healthy and command a big contract this year. But if he does stay healthy, he'll make far more money over his career than if he signed a contract for what the Blazers or any other team would be willing to risk on him this season absent seeing him play and produce. For the Blazers, they get the benefit of a year of play before deciding to commit to a long term max, or near-max, deal. You have to think that Brandon will have mixed feelings about Greg, knowing that if he pans out and the Blazers make Greg a big offer next year, it could pretty much seal the deal as far as amnestying him before next season.
