If he's signing the QO, then that means no team was willing to offer him enough financial security in a new contract, or the amount of whatever offers he received didn't break the (likely) threshold of the Blazers' willingness to match. The QO makes a lot of sense then; nearly 9 million guaranteed for one year with a possibility of making 30-40 million more in guaranteed in a new deal.
I think that all depends on how well we do this season, or how promising our future is. I think everyone agrees that even if Roy has some left in his tank; it's probably only for another 1-2 years. So regardless, he's either leaving medically or we release him. I wish both Roy and Oden the best. Also, I doubt if we look as though we can contend; Allen has no problem paying the penalties for being the best. That even means keeping Roy, LMA and Oden's big contracts.
Yeah, I was thinking that even if he just signs a 2 yr veteran minimum after this (because of a 3rd MF, or whatever) it's a guaranteed 3yr, 11-12M deal. And that's at the absolute minimum. Wherever he wants to go. OTOH, since Tyson Chandler is about to get a 4yr max, if Oden's remotely healthy this year then he'll have no problem getting offers. It's a matter of people having the cap space for him.
Greg's been my favorite player since we drafted him, so I'm glad he's coming back this year, but I echo some of the concern from a few as to now not knowing if he'll stay after this year. Hopefully he really does want to stay and just wants to prove he's worth a larger contract. Not sure I could stomach him becoming dominant for someone else... But I like reading that. And at least he's confident he'll increase his value this year.
and IF he and the rest team stays healthy (BR not included) they should be an elite squad including IMO the best frontcourt in the league. top dollar + a top team = a very attractive option for Greg STOMP
Really???? You don't consider the ability to offer an extra year and $23.6 million (that's $23,600,000.00) of guaranteed money "leverage? That sounds like a hell of a lot of leverage to me. For someone with Oden's injury history, that extra year offers a lot of addtional financial security. And that's just the leverage they have over the teams that will be WAY under the salary cap - basically perennial lottery teams. They will have about $65 million worth of leverage over teams that are over the cap (AKA: most contenders). If the Blazers want to keep Oden, they could EASILY outbid any other team by several million dollars and not even max Oden out. I think this is good for both Greg and the team. It gives him motivation to have a productive season and earn a big contract. And, as we've seen in brief stretches, a productive Oden is a game changer. If Greg is healthy and productive, our front court of Oden, Aldridge, Camby, Wallace and Batum is the best defensive front court in the league and probably the best rebounding, too. Defense and rebounding wins games, especially in the play-offs. I'm looking forward to seeing this team play. It should be fun. I just wish we had one more year off Andre Miller. Watching him throw alley-oops to both Aldridge and Oden would have been a blast and all those easy baskets would have only helped increase Greg's confidence on offense and his enjoyment of playing in Portland. Greg has always been a very humble guy. When he first signed his rookie contract, which was many millions a year since he was the #1 pick, he talked about how he only needed to live off a few thousand a month and didn't understand why some people were so greedy and wasteful. I wonder, does he feel guilty for earning so much already and not living up to expectations of the team, fans, and himself? I think he is far more sensitive to the criticism then people realize, he was 19 when we drafted him and only 23 today. He was a funny outgoing guy who fed off the enthusiasm of the crowd and fans, but the naysayers can also bring him down and make him depressed. He knew if he signed a multi-year deal today no matter the price there would be vocal criticism about how he doesn't deserve squat since he's been injured. I think he likes the idea of having a one year deal so if the local media and fans continue to beat him down he can leave. But if he proves to be an elite big man he can justify earning a new large contract here if he likes the vibe or elsewhere if it would make everybody more happy.
And, since Portland holds his Bird rights, we will have signifcant advantages over all the other teams bidding for his services. BNM
Really??? He'd have to really want out of Portland to give up potentially $26 million and and extra year of guaranteed money - if healthy and productive. If he's not healthy and productive, do we really care if he leaves? If Portland really wants to keep him, they will have huge financial advanages over every other team in the league. BNM
