I'm not going to get into the toughness of Zib, but what I will say is I'd prefer not to give him more than 8.5 mill +/- per on a new deal (tops 9, but that's pushing it). If Zib won't take 8.5 per +/- I would look at dealing him if I could get a good deal that helps the team. If I cannot then I bite the bullet and re-sign him, but I won't be happy with Zib at 10 mill, that is too much. Also I would try and cap him at 5 years, maybe 6 if he takes in the 8's. We have to be smart here, and as good as he is, Zib is not a 10 mill player in a flat cap for at least two more seasons league.
His concussions are always a concern but given his age and familiarity with the team I'd be ok with 6y/54m. He will likely score 50 if he stays healthy and is now entering his prime. Even with the flat cap i think it's doable with some juggling. They aren't really going to be able to add any major FA for the next 2-3y outside of this likely C trade this summer, but they won't need to other than a 4th liner.
Concussions are a concern for sure but he made it through 56 games this year without taking any major hits. And yeah, no one should be looking to him to bring intense physicality. He is not that type of player and frankly with those concussion issues I don't want him to try to be that type of player. At this point, I would agree he is not a $10m/yr player and would think the Rangers really have to consider alternatives if that is what its going to take. Losing his offensive production is no small feat. Like 71 said, if they can get him at $9m/yr then do it. I think it's more likely he will reach that truly elite level in the seasons to come than regress (barring injury).
Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Rick Tocchet will be interviewed by the New York Rangers for the vacant head coaching job. Additionally, Frank Seravalli is noting that the Seattle Kraken will speak with him as well.
Mika was 13th in the league in scoring but a +2 on the season, career wise he's a -26, doesn't suggest defensive prowess. Not easy to replace but highly unlikely that the Rangers will be the only team making him an offer - this is his payday contract I'd rather see the Rangers get something especially now when Mika's value is at it's highest than watch him go elsewhere for the money.
