Old friend had a similar Jetta. I think he replaced the battery cables as often as I change oil.

3500 bucks is a crapshoot. I don't keep up on reliability much except that Toyotas stand out to me in the over 150 thousand mile category.

I try not to look at the odometer of any Toyota I work on and see if I can guess the mileage.

My wife can't and I've tried countless times to teach her. I guess I just don't have the patience.

One of my best friends growing up dad had a fully restored 1967 Austin Healey. Beautiful car. Another guy that was a friend and the same age as my older sisters dad had a beautiful 1959 Jaguar that never seemed to leave the garage,

My sister, who is 4 years older than me, sold her 1965 Mustang Fastback and purchased a brand new Datsun 280z from Jim Fisher downtown. The only problem was, she couldn't drive a stick so being the good brother I am, I drove it off the lot and home for her and then helped teach her how to drive a stick. It was identical to the one below. She had it up camping one year in northern Idaho and there is a stretch between Hope Idaho and Clark Fork Idaho that has a long stretch of straight highway on the northeast side of the lake and opened it up to see what it would do and got it up to 125mph quickly and then shut it down as things were approaching very quickly at that speed. Fun ride.

I've never known Jim Fisher to sell anything but Volvos beginning in 1969 when I was shopping for my first car. It must have been a used car.

Nope, it was a brand new car lanny. Maybe it wasn't Jim Fisher, but this was back in 1978 and was located on Burnside in the same area where Jim Fisher was located. They might have been a secondary dealership for Datsun as they were pretty new to the American market.

I remember a friend buying on back in about that time. I have no idea where he bought it from but since he lived in Aloha I figured he must have bought it in Hillsboro.
I know Jim Fisher has sold Volvos at least since 1969 and they were the only dealership on West Burnside but I just don't recall them ever selling Datsuns. Oh well, live and learn.
By the way, the Fishers are OSU alums.
The reason I did not buy my '69 Volvo from Fisher was a salesman that was a horrible person. I was contemplating either Fisher or Immer and Oswald in Gladstone. I told the salesman at Fisher that I decided that I would buy from Immer and Oswald because a friend of my parents, who was an automotive engineer (aka mechanic) said they had the better service department. He chased me out the door telling me in a loud voice how stupid I was. That was the clincher, I bought from Immer and Oswald.
My mom and I both bought 2005 Volvos from Jim Fisher and had terrific luck. Got meet Mrs. Fisher and had perhaps the nicest salesman I've ever met. My wife and I became friends with the salesman and my wife can be extremely picky about who she makes friends with. She told the salesman, Henry, that he needed to buy us lunch since we bought two cars from him. He was adamant that he never ever did that. I looked at him, smiled and said, "Good luck, Henry." My wife can be the world's most charming person. She went to work on him. The next day he said, "Where would you like to eat?" LOL, he melted like I knew he would. We settled on a decent little Korean restaurant near Good Samaritan hosp. on NW 23rd which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy. Henry retired and moved to Arizona. We've now lost touch. We miss his company.

There used to be a Datsun dealership on Burnside.

I'm not denying it. I'm just saying I don't ever recall it. I was living in Lake Oswego at the time and still driving my old '69 Volvo from Immer and Oswald (now defunct). I was working out daily at the Metro Fitness Center YMCA on Barbur which was about the closest I got to that part of town from 1967 to 2005. I'm sure I went up and down West Burnside a few times but I have no recollection of them selling Datsuns.

I'm considering going up to Seattle to buy my Volvo since I've gotten a good deal up there before on a 1987 Volvo 760 I bought for my wife. No sales tax to Oregon buyers. The only hitch would be to get it serviced at either Fisher or Peter's Autoworks in Tigard, where I've had my old '83 serviced. Now, Peter's would not be a problem but Fisher might be because I wouldn't have bought it from them.

As I write this I'm thinking I could run up to Seattle where I can shop at Ft. Lewis and then get a couple quotes on a new Volvo and take my quote to Jim Fisher. Maybe Fisher would come down to a figure at least close to Seattle's figure.
