Well I'm taking a couple of AP courses next year, and history is definitely not my strong point. So I'm kind of thinking about dropping out and going to regular, because I'm pretty positive I'm going to struggle. But the problem is, I love the class. A lot of my friends are in there and my teacher is pretty chill. Ah, decisions decisions.

They like that you're challenging yourself, but that only matters if you challenge yourself and succeed. To be frank, a person isn't anything special if they challenge themselves but fail; kinda pointless, you know?

Take AP History, and get an A. There's no reason why you can't do that, and considering that this would be the best case scenario...sounds like you've got a good opportunity at hand.

I've had experiences where "easier" classes were made a lot harder because it was taught with a horrible teacher. A great teacher in AP might make the class more enjoyable, attentive, and appetitive than a lower level course.

If you're just taking a couple of AP classes, it shouldn't be the end of the world if you get a C. And if the professor seems cool/easy then go for it.

Agreed Jigga, it is all about the teacher as far as History is concerned.

    Re: Random Thought Thread

The teacher is a cool guy. He goes off topic sometimes and talks to us about random stuff like sports or movies, but the tests and stuff are hard as well. I read through like 3 chapters a couple of days ago, and studied a little here and there and got a D on the test. So basically I'm starting off the class with a fucking D, which never happened before in my life (I never got less than a B on my actual grade) so it scared the shit out of me. I'm not sure if I should stay in the class and push myself through it or just drop out and take an easier path. My other AP classes that I'm taking aren't as hard as this...

I had a horrible teacher at IVC who was liberal as hell. Believed the whole CIA mind control army of assassins and a bunch of other crazy stuff, and basically everything you wrote had to agree with him. If not, you fail. And seeing as how in class he said we could write whatever and as long as it was intelligent and argumentative he would pass us, and our grade was based only on one paper. I turned in my paper and I questioned the validity of some of his stuff with evidence I found from books and other crap. And he gives me an D for the class and no comment on my paper.

    Wow...

I'm glad the teachers I've encountered so far have all been somewhat reasonable. That sucks

Can't you file an appeal or something? It sounds like you have a decent case.

    Re: Random Thought Thread

Brian, I'd say that if you're up for the workload then go for it. Keep in mind that it was harder than ever to get into college last year and its going to be harder for your class (so they say). My major concern would be that this class hurts your performance in other classes. Senior year AP history is supposedly the hardest class you can take in HS, my friends who took it had to go to study sessions after school and on the weekends, buy hundreds of dollars in prep materials for the AP test, etc. etc. Its a ton of work and a big commitment so I'd just be concerned that you put so much work into that class that it hurts you in other classes (especially if you're taking multiple AP classes) and then you end up at the end of the year with lower-than-expected grades in your other classes and still a C in AP history.

Also a random note; don't be too concerned with college. Just do your best and try to have some fun every now and then. Its pathetic seeing how many kids in high school who basically set their sights on Stanford or Berkeley or somewhere like that and when they don't get in they're devastated and bitter. There's a TON of great colleges out there, a lot of elite colleges you've never even heard of. After your first job in the real world no one gives a shit where you want to college. In short, just be open and positive becuase its going to be nuts trying to get into any reputable college for you. College will be what you make of it- its nice to get into the big name schools but don't be discouraged if you don't get into your top choice.

I still remember my first class of high school with my honors (and later AP) english teacher who's ancient and been teaching for like 50 years. He started off by saying "anyone have dreams of going to stanford or princeton? Forget it. You're not getting in." and he went on to say some of the things I just said. He was pretty much right too and I went to a rich bitch private HS with crazily smart and dedicated kids.

Great post, I just disagree with you on a minor thing.

AP History is the hardest? AP Physics/Chem/etc. were much more difficult from what I heard.

    Re: Random Thought Thread

I got a B :( but that was probably because of laziness.

My teacher was awesome. He was funny, made the class interesting...he even started talking about the JFK assassinations, and allowed everyone to make their own judgments based on all of the facts brought up.

And then he had us watch JFK, which wasn't really completely factual, but still really interesting.

He let us argue with him, too. And he looked like Super Mario. He was too cool.

Just thinking - I wouldn't mind dating a Bosnian girl. There are a couple extremely pretty ones, like this one in my English class in high school. You couldn't even tell she was Bosnian until she started talking. She was mad pretty..

haha Power Rangers was where it was at in 2nd-3rd grade for me. I remember when they brought out the White Ranger everyone thought he was the shit, but Green was always my favorite (I was even him for Halloween one year).

Also, the colors matched. That was always funny.

    Dammit!

I was invited to the Twins game today (not on TV, Liriano pitching, dollar hot dog day), but I thought it was at 7. It's a noon game I guess. UGHHH!

I loved the Green Ranger too. He would always be a pimp and come in and save them.

Pretty sad the yellow ranger chick died a while back though.

LOL I always got a kick out of the yellow ranger being Asian and the black ranger being...black.
