If the opposing team does not have a beefy center, then it's not obvious that "Can't Play Kanter" is not correct.... Which is why I find it useful to think of Kanter/Giles as one player: Opponent has a BIG => Kanter, opponent plays a smaller big=>Giles
Melo is a net negative player at this point in his career. He may score a lot, but he takes a lot of possession to do so & is inefficient. He also gives up more on D than he produces on O. Being the 10-12th best player is about right for him.
