Ray Rice inside elevator punch video released.

I'm not even going to bother arguing with people who think the railing was to blame or that the NFL ruined Rice's life and he should be offered anger management or that the spouses are both over it so we should just move on too... but I want to share my experience with domestic abuse. There is nothing funny about it.

This stuff escalates. Believe me, this isn't the first time Mr. Rice has hit his girlfriend/wife (it was just the first time he got caught) and it will not be the last. Hopefully she will survive unlike my friends. There is no excuse for him.

I'll believe that Goodell loses his job when I see it. He seems like a pretty major power broker. Of course, if the NFL starts losing sponsors, the owners might fire him. But probably not unless that starts happening, IMO.

Either way, this is going to get worse for Goodell and the NFL before it gets better.

 

I think Goodell has to go. He has lost all credibility. That voicemail is pretty damning.

Bottom line, Mike Vick is back in the league. Ray Lewis was treated like a hero by this league. Suddenly there's a videotape and it's the worst? What the hell do people think happened in that elevator?

Here's a wild thought: let criminal behavior be handled by courts and juries.

This case has become a great example of why sports leagues shouldn't get involved in issues beyond their competence. Any action the NFL takes against Rice is based solely on PR considerations - but every action they take just makes people blame them even more.

If Ray Rice worked stocking shelves at Wal-mart, would people expect the CEO of Wal-Mart to resign? Then why is Goodell responsible for Rice? He isn't....but his frantic reaction to this media "crisis" is making it look like he is.

 

It just doesn't work to try to compare the NFL, and an NFL player with walmart and their employees. If the image of Walmart as a whole were affected by the actions of a single employee, then you might have a comparison. Maybe if it were like a board member at Walmart, it might be more closely related.

 

I heard it was domestic violence and Ray Rice struck his fiancé. Domestic violence happens all the time with different degrees of severity. A 2 game suspension, I figured it wasn't as bad as it was.

Then the video came out and clearly it was much worse than what was projected to the public. You seem to want the original punishment to stand, video be damned. Other see that video and see a severe case of domestic violence and the league got it completely wrong. I'm glad they went back and got it right rather than say oh well we misjudged it the first time but aren't going to do anything about it.

He knocked her out cold and then completely disrespected her treating her body like a piece of meat rather than showing any kind of compassion or concern for her well being. It was sickening to see a man that size handle the entire situation the way he did. He has issues that he needs to deal with and being suspended from his job for a significant amount of time is what one should expect in this country when you act the way Rice did during this incident. He is not getting beheaded as you suggest, Rice isn't even doing any jail (as compared to Vick who did actual prison time). His boss fired him and the league has suspended him. Oh the injustice of it all.

You want to call it morally superior or blood lust, that is fine. But personally I hope we live in a society where that kind of abuse will not be handled with by a slap on the wrist.

 

I found the initial video horrifying enough, thank you very much. I wasn't stupid enough to make the assumptions you did.

And there's a difference between a slap on the wrist and a financial death sentence.
