Real Salt Lake aim to field USL PRO squad in 2015
    [IMG]
Real Salt Lake are preparing to enter an affiliate team in USL PRO next year, the latest addition to the growing network of developmental ties between MLS and USL.

The plan was discussed by hosts Trey Fitz-Gerald and Brian Dunseth on Tuesday night's edition of the RSL-centric radio program ESPN700 OnFrame, and confirmed to MLSsoccer.com by RSL officials on Wednesday.

Should the club's USL PRO entry debut in 2015 as hoped, it would likely play home matches at RSL's Rio Tinto Stadium home while the Fairpark facility – a multi-use venue which would also host a range of other sports and events – is under construction.

Salt Lake’s foray into USL Pro finally has a name attached to it: the Real Monarchs.

RSL executives unveiled the Monarchs name and crest Wednesday at a presentation including new renderings of the proposed 8,000-seat facility to be added at the Utah state fair grounds. The team is set to begin play next year as RSL’s reserve team.

The construction of a new facility was approved last week by the fair grounds board, but the final project will need further approval. RSL owner Dell Loy Hansen said the stadium would cost as much as $18 million and be paid for by RSL.

Real Salt Lake react to Nick Rimando's latest heroics in LA Galaxy draw: “The guy’s incredible”

SANDY, Utah – A penalty is never guaranteed when Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando is between the pipes.

And the LA Galaxy are the latest team to have been reminded of Rimando’s greatness afterJuninho was denied on a second-half stoppage-time spot kick, allowing RSL to escape with a scoreless draw Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

“Save it,” Rimando said when asked about his thoughts when the PK was awarded. “Try to save it. Try to stall a little bit. Try to ask the referee what’s going on. Try to figure out what the foul was about and then just focus on the ball. I was lucky to guess the right way.”

The penalty came in the 90th minute and was awarded after a free kick from 25 yards out. RSL defender Jamison Olave and Omar Gonzalez tangled in the box, sending the LA center back sprawling to the turf and leading to the assistant referee to raise his flag and head referee Jose Carlos Rivero to point to the spot.

Colorado Rapids 1, Real Salt Lake 2

Real Salt Lake made an epic comeback to beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1, taking this Rocky Mountain Cup meeting and jumping up off the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The match turned in the final 10 minutes, first with a Jared Watts handball on the goalline that set up a Yura Movsisyan penalty kick. Then Brooks Lennon scored his first goal in MLS to stun the Colorado crowd and keep Mike Petke unbeaten since returning to the MLS head coaching ranks.
