AaRoN - A- Are you sure that's not Chris Martin? Seriously, those guys sound strikingly similar, especially when you back their vocals with piano. I love it though. I'm not as big of a Coldplay fan as I used to be, but these guys have a slightly different vibe to them that I like; it's darker. And you were right, couldn't even tell English wasn't his first language. As for the Grassroots, I love that song, but after I heard The Drifter's "I Count the Tears," I've never really viewed it the same way, seeing how it was written before "Live for Today." Here's a sample of it (track #11). I couldn't find it on YouTube: http://www.pandora.com/music/album/0b6cb97f482500fa Anyway, for my actual recommendation, here's a song from another band from the late 60's that I've always been into, Ten Years After. My dad was actually good friends with Alvin Lee in the early 60's. He lived with him for a while before moving to Haight Ashbury. Invalid Video Link

A Rush Of Blood To The Head was the first sign of them heading downhill after their stellar album Parachutes and the previous EPs which are simply brilliant. The only song that stood out on AROBTTH for me was Politik. Thankfully I've seen them live before they killed their image and (to me) their music. I was actually really deeply hurt by that because they were a huge influence for me. AaRoN are defiitely more dark though and I love how they get into their music. You can see it already in the video quite a bit. I never heard Chris Martin in him until you pointed it out though. There is actually a band out there (can't remember the name though) and their singer sounds exactly 100% like Martin. Really freaky, I'll have to dig it up. * No luck, I'll have to look tomorrow. You posting a new video, VC?

You posting a new video, VC?</div> Yeah, Coldplay really has gotten progressively worse. I was disappointed with A Rush of Blood to the Head as well, except I liked a few more songs than just Politik, namely "Daylight" and the title song, "A Rush of Blood to the Head." I lost all interest in them shortly thereafter though. I posted a new video, Ten Years After - "I'd Love to Change the World." It just took me a while, because I was looking for a full version of The Drifter's "I Count the Tears" for my recommendation but didn't have any luck.
Ten Years After - I'd Love To Change The World - A Excellent music. That's also a nice solo near the end to go along with a trippy feeling throughout the entire track. I was listening to a lot of older music around the time I discovered Coldplay, dredg and Venus. Which ultimately was a great time in my life, obviously. Haha! Just to note though I definitely don't know as much of the older stuff as you do. That's for sure. I just picked up whatever good tunes there were and looked into the artists a bit afterward. That's awesome about your dad living with the guy though, did he tell you about any interesting moments about the time? Also, thanks for the link to the clip. That was pretty cool I'll have to hear more. Next song is from the Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God Invalid Video Link I'd like to know your opinion on these guys. They make some crazy music. The lyrics are great. I absolutely love their first album. Their new one is different, but I'm getting into it.
A I absolutely love that song. It's one of the songs I purposely play when I go on a road trip. Though, I haven't heard any of their other material. Here's something from a band I've been digging lately, 65daysofstatic. They've easily become one of my favorite acts... 65daysofstatic - I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood
B They actually remind me musically of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, the band M posted about a while back. They also sound a lot like the Mercury Program, a trio out of Florida that does instrumental rock that sounds really similar. What's their story? New Song: Here's a song from a well-known song from a band that's often overrated by most of their pious fans but is generally underrated by the national media and described as "just another grunge band from the 90's." They weren't God's gift to music, but they wrote some of the greatest songs of the decade while Layne Staley was alive. Alice in Chains - Would Invalid Video Link
Alice in Chains - Would - B I personally always hear arguments of Alice in Chains vs Nirvana. Nothing against Nirvana of course, but I've actually always liked Alice in Chains more. The song is pretty straight forward and this wasn't their best song, but it is nice to hear it after a few years. I love the ending most of all. Really a shame what happened Layne Staley. What did he die from again, Speedball? Next song is from Sigur R?s - Gong Invalid Video Link I'm in the mood for their music so I decided to post a video. Not an official one, but the fan did a pretty good job I think. This is one of a few songs I can honestly admit that I cannot sing to, like many of their tracks. I can't hit certain notes, way too high. Absolutely beautiful song, just not easy for some people to get into.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Crap VC you got to it first, lol. Ok, let me get to yours.</div> Sorry, didn't mean to cut in front of you. When I got done listening to the song and posted a rating for it I had just seen that you were viewing the thread, otherwise I would have waited. A Ah, the infamous Sigur R?s, so this their sound? Wonderful falsetto voice on the lead singer; can't blame you for not being able to hit those notes, they're insanely high. Musically, they kinda remind me of Radiohead (maybe I should stop with the ridiculous comparisons in this thread, that's three in a row, lol), but the vocals definitely distinguish them. I'm going to search JBB to see some more of your posts on them --- can definitely see myself getting into this sound. Man, this is just what this thread was intended for. Don't want to come off as an ass-kisser or anything like that, but these recommendations, mostly the European groups I've never heard of over here in the States, have opened up a new window of music to me. BTW - Does anyone else want to drop the grading system and just go to a comment requirement instead? Maybe it's just me, but I think I'm personally being a bit inconsistent and have a hard time giving certain songs that are in completely different genres grades based on the same scale. New Song: Fun rock tune to dance to from an underrated band... Electric Six - High Voltage (If you have good bass on your computer, turn it up! ) Oh, and yeah, it's not a chick "singing" back-up vocals on this song, nor is it Jack White like some of my friends thought, haha. It's actually a male fan who won a contest to sing on the track. Invalid Video Link

Really, because it pisses some people off if their videos don't have high rates and that's understandable because we can't all agree on the same genres. As for Sigur R?s. Sometimes they do remind me of Radiohead too. Could be why Radiohead have heaped so much praise for this band? Nah, even Metallica have praised Sigur R?s strange enough. I think it actually is the eerie approach to sounds and vocal work that make them compare to one another. Their best song though, Gl?s?li is simply mind-boggling for me. It is too much to take in sometimes, makes me cry because it is like a piece of art. The video is beautiful as well. I posted it on the first page. Also glad to see you getting into a whole new set of music. We all do of course. Anyway let me know about the rating system change and then I'll comment on your video, man. I have great speakers so I'm set.

I used to love their stuff before they sold out and became total middle-aged douchebags... but you've got to respect their musical opinions, as each member is immensely talented in his own right. And yeah, let's just drop the ratings. The song I recommended doesn't have that great of a bassline, but for some reason the bass has always just stood out to me on it.
Electric Six - High Voltage That video and the song itself is absolutely friggin' hilarious. The bass line is definitely not notable, but it doesn't ruin the song because it flows with everything else. They really turned up the bass and treble for this track and though it gets a bit repetitive towards the end I still found it fun and energetic enough to keep my attention. Nice recommendation. New song is from Half Asleep - Un Quart Invalid Video Link I discovered this band from Venus' recommendation. Also a Belgian band. They have a really natural sound, but are incredibly dark. They have some of the best lyrics I have ever heard. This song actually being the weakest of any of them by that account and is the most "radio friendly." You can download their entire album for free here. Should be easy to navigate. * Ok, video works now. Sorry about that.
I dig the Half Asleep song (unfortunately, I'm tired as hell at the moment and am half-asleep as a result of listening to such downtempo music). Love pretty much all ambient music, and I can see how Venus can be into them. They've got a similar vibe. Are they from Belgium as well? I'm youtubing some of their other less "radio friendly" stuff. Any names of songs I should check out? As for Electric Six, I know the bassline isn't that great. I just love playing it in my car because I've got subs and they made the bass really loud and prominent on the song. And yeah, Staley died of a speedball. It's incredible how many icons have died of speedballs: Layne Staley, Jim Morrison, Mitch Hedberg, John Belushi, River Phoenix, Chris Farley, Brent Mydland, and Hillel Slovak. I tried a speedball once in high school because I was having a really bad experience on coke and wanted to come down, and it was one of the most intense experiences that I've had in my life. I can see how they can become addicting. Anyway, on that note, here's my next recommendation: one of the young and potentially great Hillel Slovak's last songs. Funkiest Israeli ever! R.I.P. Slim... "Just in case you never knew, I miss you slim. I love you too." Invalid Video Link Here's the roster on that song: Guitar - Hillel Slovak Bass - Flea (RHCP, etc.) Drums - Jack Irons (Pearl Jam, etc.) Vocals - George Clinton (Parliament Funkadelic, etc.) Vocals - Anthony Kiedis (RHCP; back when he'd just rap to the rhythm and not try to sing) Back-up Vocals - Lynn Mabry, Sheila Horne, and Jeanette McGruder (Parliament Funkadelic)

I haven't seen much of the older Chili's, with Slovak and Irons. I'm so infatuated with their stuff from Mother's Milk onwards. I know the Chili's were heavily inspired by Clinton and the PF, how many performances do they have together, Voodoo? Anyways, Let me find a video...

<div class="quote_poster">Voodoo Child Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Mamba: you want to post a video in the recommendation thread, i can't find one to post Invalid Video Link</div> Easily one of the best solo's I've ever heard, that was simply put...amazing. I can definitely see how Frusciante was inspired. I'm listening to it again and the link is going into my favorites. Invalid Video Link
The Doors are legends, and they're probably my favorite band outside of the Chili's, but this is also probably my least favorite song of theirs. I just think the organ line is too repetitive and the lyrics too trite for something from Morrison. New Song: Invalid Video Link
A That is some funky stuff right here, vintage RHCP, so full of energy. What I find amazing is how different Frusciante's style has become. He used to be heavily influenced by groups like the Ramones, the Clash, the Sex Pistols, the Germs, and most of all, early RHCP themselves. Basically, all the big punk groups of the day. Then as he got more and more into guys like Hendrix, Hazel, Bowie, etc. his style started to change dramatically. New Song: I love this trippy little ditty from the Doors - Invalid Video Link
The Soft Parade - The Doors: B I liked it. Probably didn't love it, but I liked it. I found it funny, maybe because it's not really my kind of music. At first I was wondering "what the hell is going on?" but as I began to listen to it, it got better. Tool's been around for quite a while, but I recently started to listen to their music, and this song is one of my favourites. Tool - The Pot Invalid Video Link That's one catchy ass bass, that's for sure.
