The next Agudelo? NY waste no time to snap up Moreno
    [IMG]

Amando Moreno left a strong enough impression after scoring the winner in the final Reserve League match for the New York Red Bulls in September that assistant coach Mike Petke approached the young forward to tell him he felt he had the potential to be a big player in the future.

It turns out the future might be sooner than even Moreno could have expected.

Three months after that goalscoring performance in the Red Bulls’ 3-1 win over Toronto FC’s reserves, Moreno signed a Homegrown deal with the Red Bulls on Tuesday. The 17-year-old (above left, with fellow signing Santiago Castano) recently found out about the Red Bulls' offer while in the car with his mom, and he was in utter disbelief, while she was in tears.

Red Bulls under pressure to name head coach
    [IMG]

According to the report, New York's long-rumored No. 1 target, Gary McAllister, is asking for more money than the Red Bulls are willing to offer. Naturally, this throws other names into consideration, such as former Portugal manager and Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz, who also directed the then MetroStars in their inaugural 1996 season.

Former Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle, who brought former Red Bulls defender Tim Ream to England, is also rumored to be interested in the job, but again, his asking price could prove a stumbling block.

Fox Soccer commentator Eric Wynalda is also rumored to have met with Red Bulls GM Jerome de Bontin and director of global soccer Gérard Houllier about a position at the club, but sporting director Andy Roxburgh (above) is expected to have the final say on a coaching hire.

New York continue makeover, ship MF Lindpere to Chicago
    [IMG]

The man who scored the first-ever goal at Red Bull Arena is no longer a New York Red Bull as the team continued its offseason retool, shipping midfielder Joel Lindpere to the Chicago Fire on Friday in exchange for an international roster spot.

Lindpere, 31, arrived in the league in 2010 from Norwegian outfit Tromsø and has spent his entire MLS career with New York. The hardworking Estonian international made 97 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals and adding 18 assists.

    Report:
Red Bulls to hire Sousa, pursue Reyna as assistant

Major League Soccer's final head coaching vacancy has been filled, according to a report from Soccer By Ives.

On Monday morning, Ives Galarcep reported that former Videoton, Leicester City, QPR and Swansea City manager Paulo Sousa had accepted the New York Red Bulls' top post, with an official announcement to come later in the week. According to Galarcep, current US Soccer youth technical director and former Red Bulls star Claudio Reyna has also been offered a position as Sousa's top assistant.

When contacted by MLSsoccer.com, the Red Bulls declined to comment on the report.

READ: Red Bulls' Petke cherishing opportunity as interim coach

Sousa recently resigned from his managerial post at Videoton in the Hungarian first division for "family reasons," and has been linked to the New York job since ESPN's Alexi Lalas reported that former Portuguese international was "a good bet to be the next coach of the New York Red Bulls" on Jan. 5.

Red Bulls name Petke head coach after long, arduous search

After a lengthy search to find the brand new face of the New York Red Bulls, the club is moving forward with one of the most familiar figures in franchise history.

The Red Bulls announced on Thursday that assistant coach Mike Petke has been promoted to the club’s top spot for the 2013 season, 15 years after he broke into Major League Soccer as a hard-charging and devoted young defender for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

Petke, who turns 37 years old next week, becomes the third-youngest coach in the league behind D.C. United’s Ben Olsen and Toronto FC’s Ryan Nelsen, and the first American-born head coach in New York since the club parted ways with Bruce Arena in November 2007. He's also the 12th current coach in MLS who played in the league at some point in his career.

Red Bulls Control Home Opener But Settle for 0-0 Tie with D.C. United

Despite out-shooting their opponent, 24-4, the New York Red Bulls settled for a 0-0 tie against D.C. United in their 2013 home opener at Red Bull Arena Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 22,022 spectators. New York now has two points off a 0-1-2 record.

The Red Bulls controlled most of the match and Fabian Espindola came closest in the opening 45 minutes, heading a Thierry Henry feed off the crossbar. Earlier, eight minutes in, New York's Eric Alexander slipped Henry in and the Frenchman forced goalkeeper Bill Hamid to make a full extension stop.

In the 56th minute, Espindola hit the crossbar again, this time from 15 yards out with a left-footed blast. Soon after. Alexander played it over the top to Henry and the forward volleyed it high. Hamid came up trumps for United later, making a point blank save on Tim Cahill seconds to keep the score line even.

New York defender Brandon Barklage nearly earned three points for the hosts at the end, forcing Hamid to make a last gasp save off the end line with a header.

The Red Bulls next hit the road to take on the Montreal Impact on Saturday, March 23 at Olympic Stadium at 4:30 PM (TV: MSG - Pre-Game Show at 4:00 PM: Radio: ESPN Deportes Nueva York 1050 AM). New York returns home on Saturday, March 30 to battle the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena at 3:30 PM. Tickets are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Henry's First Goal of 2013 Lifts New York

Forward Thierry Henry's first goal of the season in the 81st minute lifted the New York Red Bulls to their first win of the season - a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena Saturday afternoon. Midfielder Dax McCarty also found the back of the net for the Red Bulls, who improved to five points off a 1-2-2 record and helped provide head coach Mike Petke with his first-ever win at the helm.

The Red Bulls had the first scoring opportunities of the match. In the 18th minute, McCarty couldn't get his volley on target, latching onto an Eric Alexander feed. Three minutes later, McCarty slid Jonny Steele through and the midfielder cut it to Peguy Luyindula, who shot it just wide. With four minutes to play in the half, Steele's right footed attempt off a Luyindula pass went over the crossbar.

New York took the lead in the 55th minute. After a Red Bulls corner kick was cleared, Juninho played it back to Steele, who hit the ball into the box. McCarty was able to flick it on off the right post and into the back of the net.

Phliadelphia equalized in the 63rd minute. Sheanon Williams' long throw-in was met at the near post by substitute Conor Casey and the Union forward headed it in.

Coming off a left MCL sprain, Henry, who replaced Tim Cahill in the 59th minute, nearly gave the Red Bulls the lead again, hitting a bicycle kick from a McCarty cross past the right post. With 10 minutes to play, Steele forced goalkeeper Zac MacMath to block his blast from 12 yards out.

Henry found the back of the net and got the eventual match-winner in the 81st minute. Heath Pearce played the ball ahead to Luyindula and the French forward chipped it to Henry. Henry took a touch, turned and fired it home.

The Red Bulls return to action on April 7 when they take on the Chicago Fire at TOYOTA Park at 5:00 PM ET (TV: ESPN2; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). New York's next home match is on Wednesday, April 17 as it battles Sporting Kansas City at 7:30 PM. For tickets, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Red Bulls Earn First Road Win, Topping D.C. United 2-0

Goals from Thierry Henry and Jamison Olave helped give the New York Red Bulls a 2-0 win over rival D.C. United at RFK Stadium Saturday night. New York's first road victory of 2013 helped the Red Bulls improve to eight points off a 2-3-2 record and moved them into a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls went ahead in the 29th minute. Dax McCarty drove the ball towards United's defensive third and found Henry. Henry created space for himself and his shot from 25-yards out bounced past goalkeeper Bill Hamid and into the back of the net.

Five minutes later, Tim Cahill nearly put the Red Bulls 2-0 up, forcing Hamid into making a stellar save from a close-range header off a Henry cross.

The Red Bulls though did find the back of the net moments after. Juninho played a short corner kick and then got the ball back on the left wing, whipping it into the box. Brandon Barklage flicked it on and Olave used his thigh to redirect the ball into the goal.

New York goalkeeper Luis Robles came up big in the 72nd minute, going down to parry a Dwayne De Rosario free kick before blocking Chris Pontius' rebound. Henry nearly had his second of the match, hitting the right post with a low drive with nine minutes left.

New York's returns to Red Bull Arena for a two-match homestand on Wednesday, April 17 as it battles Sporting Kansas City at 7:30 PM. For tickets, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

    Red Bulls over Revolution

The New England Revolution snapped a club-record 394-minute scoreless streak in the early stages but it wasn't enough to overcome the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night as the Revs suffered a 4-1 loss at Red Bull Arena.

A hectic opening period saw the teams combine for three goals inside the first eight minutes, as the Red Bulls got strikes from Dax McCarty and Fabian Espindola sandwiched around a Brandon Barklage own goal. The Revs pressed for an equalizer throughout the second half but were ultimately twice hit on the counter as Thierry Henry and Jonny Steele scored late goals to put the result beyond doubt.

The Revs (1-3-2, 5 pts.) remain winless since their season opener, while the Red Bulls (3-4-2, 11 pts.) have now won two of their past three.

There were two changes to the Revolution side which played to a 0-0 draw with Seattle Sounders FC last weekend. Diego ***undez entered to partner Jerry Bengtson up top, while central midfielder Andy Dorman made his first start since returning to the Revolution this past offseason.

After an emotional pregame ceremony which included several tributes to the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy, both sides came out attacking and proceeded to combine for three quick-fire goals.

New York got the scoring started in the fourth minute when Tim Cahill laid off a short pass to McCarty, who took one touch to settle before lashing a low, left-footed shot inside the right post from 20 yards.

The Revs responded with an immediate equalizer just two minutes later when Barklage directed the ball into his own net after Lee Nguyen's in-swinging free kick created the danger. The goal snapped the Revolution's lengthy scoreless streak, which dated back to the season opener in Chicago.

Espindola provided the Red Bulls' own response in the eighth minute, however, restoring the home side's advantage at 2-1. Barklage's searching ball out of the back sent Espindola streaking into the box, where he cut back onto his left foot and finished past goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

The scoring slowed as the half progressed, but the hectic pace did not as the Revs pressed at every opportunity. Dorman's low pass skittered across the face of goal in the 19thminute, while Bengtson had the ball redirect off his thigh from Chris Tierney's cross in the 27thminute. Four minutes later, Bengtson was put through on goal by Kelyn Rowe, but was pushed too wide as he tried to round Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Not to be outdone, the Red Bulls had two more chances of their own before halftime. Cahill's header from Henry's free kick narrowly missed in the 39thminute, while Barklage's powerful header from an Henry corner kick forced a strong save from Shuttleworth in the 44thminute.

Set pieces continued to be a threat for both sides and the Revs almost capitalized in the 62ndminute when a corner kick fell to Jose Goncalves, but Robles was on hand to make a big save on the close-range effort.

The Revs brought on Saer Sene and Juan Toja for the final half hour to bolster their attacking efforts, but eventually the Red Bulls took advantage by hitting on the counter.

Henry made it 3-1 in the 82ndminute when he ran onto Steele's through ball and calmly finished inside the far post, while Steele got on the score sheet himself in the 89thminute, providing the finishing touch on a well-worked move which had Andre Akpan and Eric Alexander combine down the right side.

The Revs return to Gillette Stadium for their first home game in almost a month next weekend, when they'll host the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, April 27.

Red Bulls Move into First Place in the East with 1-0 Win over Columbus

Reigning MLS Player of the Week Tim Cahill tallied his third goal of the season in the 80th minute and goalkeeper Luis Robles stopped a penalty kick as the New York Red Bulls recorded their third-straight win with a 1-0 decision over the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. New York, which has earned victories in four of its last five, is now at 17 points with a 5-4-2 record and in a tie with the Montreal Impact for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls next host the Impact on Wednesday, May 8 at 7:30 PM at Red Bull Arena. For tickets, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Both teams had chances to score in a 0-0 first half. Columbus had an opportunity in the 28th minute when Federico Higuain controlled it down to Dominic Oduro, whose volley zipped over the crossbar. Five minutes later on the other end, Cahill nodded a Brandon Barklage cross wide of the goal.

Crew forward Jairo Arrieta moments after was also off target with his shot in the 35th minute. Cahill again had another chance that went high following an Eric Alexander feed and Jonny Steele dummy.

In the second half, Robles was called upon to parry away an Arrieta blast from long range. Later on, Cahill was able to chest down a Thierry Henry cross but took a heavy touch in the box and the Crew cleared.

Columbus looked like they could take the lead in the 72nd minute, as Barklage tackled Eddie Gaven in the box and referee Armando Villareal pointed to the spot. However, Robles came up big, guessing correctly and pushing aside Higuain's penalty kick attempt.

Cahill scored his third goal in two games and the eventual winner for the visitors 10 minutes from full time. Lloyd Sam's deflected cross was headed on by Cahill towards the back post. Steele hit it on the volley and goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum was able to block it. However, Cahill was first to the rebound, heading the ball just under the crossbar and into the net.

First Place Red Bulls Run Unbeaten Streak to Five with 1-1 Tie

Midfielder Lloyd Sam scored his first MLS goal as the first place New York Red Bulls ran their unbeaten streak to five with a 1-1 tie against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium Saturday night. With the draw, New York moved to 21 points with a 6-4-3 record and is leading the Eastern Conference by one point.

New York begins a three-game homestand on May 19, hosting defending MLS Cup Champion, the LA Galaxy, at 1:00 PM at Red Bull Arena. For tickets, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Fabian Espindola tried to put the Red Bulls ahead in the 14th minute, firing a left-footed blast past the right post. Later, Heath Pearce got his head on a New York corner kick and nodded it wide. In the 38th minute, Revolution forward Dimitry Imbongo ran at the Red Bulls' defense and his shot was saved by goalkeeper Luis Robles.

New England went ahead in the 54th minute. Chris Tierney's corner kick towards the near post was volleyed by Diego ***undez and blocked off the line by New York's Kosuke Kimura. However, ***undez got to his own rebound first and put it in from close range.

However, the Red Bulls responded immediately. Forward Andre Akpan, making his first start as a Red Bull, slid it into the box to Sam, who controlled the pass and put it inside the left post for his first career MLS goal.

New York City FC, Red Bulls rivalry heating up already
    [IMG]

New York Red Bulls boss Mike Petke had some stern words for 2015 expansion side New York City FC: “They’re the new guys coming in and I'm looking forward to smashing them in 2015, to be honest with you. That’s it. I don’t have any love for [them] because it’s a new team in the league, I love this league, and I think expansion is a [good] thing but now that they have come where we are we’ll welcome them, hopefully, with a smashing.”

First Place Red Bulls Extend Unbeaten Run to Seven with 2-2 Tie Versus Crew

Jamison Olave's 91st minute goal helped the Eastern Conference-leading New York Red Bulls tie the Columbus Crew 2-2 Sunday at Red Bull Arena. Thierry Henry also found the back of the net for New York, which is enjoying its first seven-game unbeaten run in MLS play in 10 years (5-0-2 in past seven matches) and improved to 25 points off a 7-4-4 record, giving it a two-point lead over the second place Montreal Impact.

Columbus took the lead two minutes into the match. Eddie Gaven controlled the ball in New York's defensive end and slipped it to Dominic Oduro. Oduro raced into the box, cut to his left foot and slid it home to give the Crew the lead.

Jonny Steele nearly tied the game up immediately for the visitors, firing a shot on frame that goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum had to parry.

The Red Bulls evened the score in the 31st minute. Tim Cahill hit a long ball towards the top of the Crew box that flew over the Columbus defense and into Henry's path. Henry chipped it over Gruenebaum and into the netting for the Frenchman's sixth goal of the year. The Red Bulls Captain almost doubled his tally seconds later, again running onto a Cahill through ball, rounding Gruenebaum and putting it wide of net.

New York continued to exert pressure in the second half. In the 64th minute, Fabian Espindola rose up to head a Steele cross over the bar. Then, Eric Alexander volleyed it into the arms of Gruenebaum.

The visitors regained the lead on after Justin Meram was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty box by Kosuke Kimura. Federico Higuain stepped up and put it in with 16 minutes to play.

The Red Bulls tried to rally to get back in the contest. Substitute Juninho ripped a blast from a Henry layoff but Gruenebaum was able to make the stop. Then, off a Juninho corner kick, Olave's goalbound header was cleared off the line by Kevan George.

However, Olave though would find the back of the net in the first minute of stoppage time. Steele played a high cross towards the back post and Olave was able to control the pass, cut it to his left foot and smash it past Gruenebaum.

The Red Bulls finish their three-game homestand on Saturday, June 1 when they take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Red Bull Arena at 7:00 PM ET. Before that, the Red Bulls will host Reading United AC on Wednesday evening at 7:30 PM in a third round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup clash. Tickets are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

New York handed first loss since April 17

The New York Red Bulls lost their first match in eight games Saturday night, falling to Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 2-1, at Red Bull Arena in front of 19,969 spectators. New York, which was enjoying its first seven-game unbeaten run (5-0-2) in 10 years, remained at 25 points with a 7-5-4 record.

The Red Bulls will have a break from play next week before participating in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, taking on the New England Revolution at Harvard University on June 12 at 7:30 PM. New York's next MLS match is on June 23, as it battles the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park at 5:00 PM (TV: ESPN; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). For tickets to Red Bulls matches, call 1.877.RBSOCCER or log onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

The Red Bulls dominated possession in the opening half and tested Vancouver's defense early, with Fabian Espindola forcing goalkeeper Brad Knighton to stop his left-footed attempt in the 14th minute. Soon after, Jonny Steele's on target blast was caught by Knighton. In the 21st minute, Juninho created space for himself and hit a dipping shot that zipped just over the crossbar.

New York took the lead in the 51st minute via good attacking play in Vancouver's defensive third. Thierry Henry slid the ball through to an on-rushing Steele, whose low cross was re-directed into his own net by Greg Klazura.

However, the visitors equalized seven minutes later. After New York cleared a corner kick, Whitecaps FC defender Lee Young-Pyo swung a ball towards the back post that was headed towards the penalty spot. Jordan Harvey was there to volley it into the net.

The Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men when Jamison Olave earned his second yellow card and a subsequent red card for a foul on Kenny Miller in the 75th minute.

Vancouver took home the three points seven minutes from full time as Miller headed home a Russell Teibert cross from inside the box.

Ten Man Red Bulls Fall on the Road to Philadelphia, 3-0

Playing down a man for most of the match, the New York Red Bulls fell to the Philadelphia Union, 3-0, Sunday at PPL Park. New York (7-6-4, 25 points) and Philadelphia (7-5-4, 25 points) are now tied for second place in the Eastern Conference, four points behind leader, the Montreal Impact.

The Red Bulls, who had their five-match winning streak against the Union snapped, will play their next match is on June 30, as they face the Houston Dynamo at Red Bull Arena at 2:00 PM (TV: ESPN; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). Philadelphia took the lead in the seventh minute. A Union corner kick was cleared out of the box to Keon Daniel and he passed it to Sheanon Williams on the left wing. Williams curled in a cross that Conor Casey headed into the back of the net. Ten minutes later, Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles kept the score at 1-0, putting his leg out to block a Jack McInerney close range effort.

The Red Bulls were reduced to 10 men in the 28th minute when Lloyd Sam was issued a red card for a challenge on Danny Cruz. Despite being a man down, New York fought back for the rest of the interval and thought it had a goal in the 36th minute when Dax McCarty nodded it in off a Thierry Henry free kick. However, the Red Bulls midfielder was ruled offside.

Both teams had chances to find the back of the net after halftime. Casey forced Robles to parry in the six yard box and Sebastien Le Toux could not knock in the rebound. On the other end, Jonny Steele controlled a Peguy Luyindula feed, turned his defender and put his shot wide of the mark.

The Union doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. Daniel blasted it at Robles and the Red Bulls goalkeeper was able to block it. However, Casey was able to get to the rebound first and slid it home.

With the Red Bulls pushed forward and substitutes Fabian Espindola and Andre Akpan coming close to pulling the deficit back to one, Philadelphia completed the scoring two minutes from full time, as Antoine Hoppenot tallied a goal off a Le Toux pass.
