Red Bulls Fall on the Road to Rapids, 2-0

The New York Red Bulls dropped a 2-0 decision to the Colorado Rapids Thursday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. New York stayed at 28 points with an 8-7-4 record and is still in sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference, trailing leader the Montreal Impact by two points.

New York's next match is on July 13 against the Impact at Red Bull Arena at 7:00 PM. Three days later, the Red Bulls host Olympique Lyonnais on July 16 at 8:00 PM in an international friendly. Tickets for both matches are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Fielding an unchanged lineup from the team's 2-0 win over Houston last Sunday, the Red Bulls had the game's best chance of the opening half in the 23rd minute, as Eric Alexander slid it through to Thierry Henry, who took a touch and pushed his attempt wide right. On the other end 14 minutes later, Rapids midfielder Nathan Sturgis latched onto a short Red Bulls clearance and shot it right at goalkeeper Luis Robles.

Colorado took the lead in the 47th minute. Following a corner kick, Edson Buddle's 12-yard blast was deflected to Drew Moor, whose on-target volley was blocked off the line by New York defender Markus Holgersson. However, Sturgis was first to the rebound and there to smash it into the ceiling of the net.

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 68th minute. New York was dispossessed in its own 18-yard box and Christopher Klute hit a low left-footed cross that Deshorn Brown redirected in from close range.

Down a pair of goals, the Red Bulls pressed to find the back of the net, as Fabian Espindola went high with a shot from 23 yards out before Henry's chip was nearly put in by substitute Lloyd Sam at the back post.

Red Bulls Roll Past Montreal, 4-0, at Red Bull Arena

Forward Thierry Henry had a goal and two assists while Eric Alexander, Tim Cahill and Peguy Luyindula also found the back of the net, as the New York Red Bulls rolled past the Montreal Impact, 4-0, at Red Bull Arena Saturday evening.

The win over the Impact, which was leading the Eastern Conference heading into this weekend, lifted the Red Bulls (9-7-4 record) to 31 points, putting them in a second place tie with Montreal (9-5-4). Both teams are two points adrift of first place Sporting Kansas City (9-5-6, 33 pts.).

Alexander gave the Red Bulls the lead in the 10th minute with a spectacular individual effort. After receiving the ball from Henry on the right side of midfield, Alexander drove towards goal and got past several Impact players before putting a low left-footed shot past goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

Six minutes later, the Red Bulls doubled their advantage. Brandon Barklage slipped Fabian Espindola through along the right sideline. Espindola cut in and chipped it to an onside Henry, who buried it from eight yards out for his seventh goal of the year.

Alexander again was a threat to the Impact defense and was inches from scoring his second of the match in the 32nd minute, making a direct run with the ball, controlling it with his right foot and blasting it off the woodwork.

Goalkeeper Luis Robles kept the Impact scoreless three minutes into the second half, going down to block a Justin Mapp attempt. Soon after, Robles came up big again for New York, parrying an on-target Marco Di Vaio shot out of danger.

Henry had a hand in New York's third goal in the 63rd minute, curling a corner kick that Cahill dove to head in by the near post. Cahill nearly had a second in the 84th minute, nodding a Henry cross off the crossbar.

The Red Bulls earned a penalty kick with three minutes to play when Lloyd Sam was tripped in the box by Jeb Brovsky. Luyindula stepped up and converted the spot kick for his first MLS goal.

The Red Bulls host French Ligue 1 side, Olympique Lyonnais, on July 16 at 8:00 PM in an international friendly. Tickets for the match are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

New York Red Bulls' Tim Cahill suffers torn PCL in right knee, faces 3-4 weeks out
    [IMG]

The injury Tim Cahill suffered this past weekend will keep him out for more than just the MLS All-Star Game.

The New York Red Bulls announced via a conference call Tuesday afternoon that Cahill suffered a torn PCL in his right knee in the club’s 4-3 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday, and that the expected recovery time is three to four weeks. No surgery is needed on the injury, which Cahill suffered in the fourth minute of the match vs. RSL on a challenge from Yordany Alvarez.

Red Bulls Move to First in East with Thrilling 3-2 Road Win over Sporting

Goals from Jonny Steele, Fabian Espindola and Lloyd Sam elevated the New York Red Bulls to first place in the Eastern Conference and a thrilling 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City in front of a sold out crowd of 21,304 at Sporting Park Saturday.

The Red Bulls were able to withstand late pressure from the hosts, which led the East by one point entering the match, to earn their third win against a conference leader in the past four games. New York now finds itself atop the Eastern Conference with 38 points off a 11-7-5 record ahead of second place Sporting Kansas City (10-7-6, 36 points).

Sporting Kansas City exerted pressure on New York early and in the 12th minute, Kei Kamara found space on the left side of the field and slid it to Benny Feilhaber, whose on target attempt was parried by Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles. On the other end, New York nearly caught the hosts on the counterattack two minutes later when Thierry Henry drove down the right wing and crossed it to an open Steele. Steele's first-time attempt was blocked though by goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen.

New York took the lead in the 27th minute and Steele made no mistake with his second opportunity. McCarty had possession in the middle of the field and played a perfect through ball to Steele. Steele was able to dribble in the box and fired it near post past Nielsen.

However, Sporting KC equalized right before halftime. Minutes after Claudio Bieler nodded it over the bar from close range, Sonny Saad's header off a Chance Myers cross was saved by Robles. However, Kamara was first to the rebound and knocked it home.

The Red Bulls regained the lead in the 63rd minute. Sam received the ball on the right wing and played it through to an onside Espindola. Espindola took the ball into the box and curled it with his left foot into the bottom corner of the net.

The visitors doubled their advantage six minutes later on a terrific counterattack started by a Robles long throw to an open Steele on the left wing. Steele raced down the sideline and found Sam with space in Sporting's defensive end. The Englishman cut back to his left foot and put it home for his second goal of the year.

Sporting KC pulled one back to make the score 3-2 in the second minute of stoppage time, as Dom Dwyer headed in a Kamara cross. However, despite pressure from the hosts, the Red Bulls held on and left Sporting Park with three points.

New York hits the road again to take on the Columbus Crew on Saturday, Aug. 10 at Crew Stadium at 7:30 PM ET (TV: MSG; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). The Red Bulls' next home contest is on Aug. 17, when it battles the Philadelphia Union at 8:00 PM at Red Bull Arena. Tickets for Red Bulls matches are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Red Bulls Move into First Place Tie, Draw Union 0-0 in Front of Sold Out Crowd

Despite having several chances to score, the New York Red Bulls settled for a 0-0 tie against the Philadelphia Union Saturday evening in front of a sold out crowd of 25,355 at Red Bull Arena.

Match photos available to download via this clickable link (Please credit: Rob Tringali/New York Red Bulls)

The win pushed the Red Bulls (11-8-6, 39 pts.) into a tie for first place with Sporting Kansas City (11-7-6, 39 pts.) in a congested Eastern Conference, while the Union (10-7-8, 38 pts.) and the Montreal Impact (11-7-5, 38 pts.) are trailing by just one point. Sporting Kansas City plays tomorrow against San Jose.

In a tight first half, both teams had few solid chances. Philadelphia forward Conor Casey forced goalkeeper Luis Robles to make a simple save a few minutes in before Red Bulls defender Markus Holgersson tried to slide it past the Union's Zac MacMath, but could not get it through. In the 34th minute, New York had the best chance of the half as forward Fabian Espindola headed a Jonny Steele cross on target. However, MacMath was there to tip it over the bar.

Searching for the game's opening goal, Steele ripped an attempt that went wide right in the 60th minute. Soon after, Tim Cahill's header following an Eric Alexander feed was caught by MacMath. In the 73rd minute, the Union was inches from going up 1-0. Sebastien Le Toux was able to control the ball in the box and slammed it off the crossbar with his right foot.

With 11 minutes to play in the match, Steele created space for himself and rolled it from 20 yards just past the right post. On the other end, Robles made a stellar fingertip save on substitute Antoine Hoppenot to keep the scoreline level. New York's Brandon Barklage nearly earned the Red Bulls the three points in stoppage time, powerfully nodding a Henry corner kick straight into MacMath's arms.

The Red Bulls will face CD Chivas USA on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 5:00 PM ET at the StubHub Center (TV: MSG; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). New York's next home match is on Aug. 31, when they battle D.C. United at Red Bull Arena at 8:00 PM. Red Bulls Roll Past Toronto FC 2-0, Grab Sole Possession of First Place

Forwards Thierry Henry and Fabian Espindola each recorded a goal and the defense earned its ninth shutout of the year, as the New York Red Bulls moved into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-0 win over Toronto FC Saturday night at Red Bull Arena.

With 48 points off a 14-9-6 record and five games left in the regular season, the Red Bulls broke out of a three-way tie atop the table and are now three points ahead of the Montreal Impact, which lost earlier in the day to Columbus, 2-1, and the idle Sporting Kansas City.

The Red Bulls will next play on Sunday, Sept. 22 against FC Dallas at 5:00 PM at Red Bull Arena (TV: MSG, UniMas; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). Tickets for Red Bulls matches are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

Both teams battled for control of the match and Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty had an open look on goal in the 19th minute, hitting a left-footed volley that zipped straight to goalkeeper Joe Bendik. On the other end, Toronto FC forward Andrew Wiedeman headed an Alvaro Rey cross just over the bar.

Henry and the Red Bulls drew first blood in the 32nd minute. Rookie midfielder Michael Bustamante, making his first MLS start, played a through ball to McCarty, who controlled it and knocked a low pass across the box that was tapped in by Henry.

Bendik kept the visitors within one in the 67th minute, going to his right to parry away a Bradley Wright-Phillips header after the English forward was first to a bouncing ball in the box. Four minutes later, Wright-Phillips had space from 18 yards and fired it right at Bendik.

The Red Bulls doubled their advantage and secured the three points 10 minutes from full time. Following a cleared Henry free kick, David Carney's deflected cross was flicked by Toronto FC Steven Caldwell. Espindola was first to it and headed it over Bendik and into the back of the net from an acute angle.

Cahill's Last Second Goal Books Red Bulls Playoff Ticket

Tim Cahill's goal in the seventh minute of second half stoppage time gave the Red Bulls a thrilling 2-2 tie Saturday against the New England Revolution at Red Bull Arena in front of a sold out crowd of 25,219 spectators, helping New York become the first team to punch their ticket to the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs.

With New York down 2-1, Cahill was able to be the first to a loose ball in the box and headed it into the back of the net for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Under first-year head coach Mike Petke, New York, which will participate in their 10th postseason in 11 years, improved to an Eastern Conference-best 53 points off a 15-9-8 record with two regular season games left to play. New York has a two-point lead in its conference over second place Sporting Kansas City.

The Red Bulls have a bye next week before returning to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 when they travel to BBVA Compass Stadium to battle the third place Houston Dynamo at 4:00 PM ET (TV: MSG, UniMas; Radio: ESPN Deportes Radio Nueva York 1050 AM). New York will host the Chicago Fire on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 5:00 PM at Red Bull Arena in the season finale for both teams. Tickets for Red Bulls matches are available by calling 1.877.RBSOCCER or logging onto www.newyorkredbulls.com.

New York had the majority of quality chances in the first half and Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry almost put the hosts in front two minutes into the contest, hitting a looping header over goalkeeper Matt Reis and just above the crossbar.

In the 14th minute, the Red Bulls took the lead. After good pressure from Jonny Steele, Fabian Espindola was able to intercept a Scott Caldwell back pass, dribbled towards the top of the box and deposited the ball into the lower right hand corner of the net with his right foot for his ninth goal of the season. Espindola nearly doubled his tally for the night and New York's advantage 10 minutes following his first tally, nodding a Henry cross off the left post.

The Red Bulls searched for another goal and Henry nearly gave it to them, cutting to his left foot and curling an on target shot that a fully-extended Reis pushed aside. On the other end, New York's goalkeeper Luis Robles made a key block on Saer Sene shot from 10 yards out.

The Revolution earned a controversial penalty kick when referee Fotis Bazakos ruled that Jamison Olave handled the ball in the box. Lee Nguyen stepped up and converted from the spot to tie the game with five minutes left to play.

Despite going down a man following an 86th minute red card issued to Andy Dorman, the visitors went in front and seemed to have earned the full three points. Diego ***undez was able to capitalize on a New York turnover in its own half and drove towards the Red Bulls' goal before putting it past Robles in the first minute of added time.

However, Cahill was the hero for New York and in the 97th minute, the Australian was able to get his head a loose ball after Reis punched away a Steele free kick and flicked it into the back of the net.

In a must-win situation, captain Thierry Henry scored New York’s first goal after the hosts went behind, while four other players found the back of the net as the Red Bulls, under first-year head coach and former New York standout defender Mike Petke, completed the regular season with an MLS-best 59 points and a 17-9-8 record.

New York Red Bulls ready to launch USL PRO side in 2015:
"We see it as a big, big advantage"

If all goes according to plan, the New York Red Bulls will soon follow the footsteps of the LA Galaxy and field a team in USL PRO.

Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said at the club’s media day on Tuesday that New York are currently well into the process of launching a third-division side, set to begin play next year. Roxburgh told reporters back in December that the Red Bulls had explored the possibility of launching a USL PRO club for 2014, but that they were not able to finalize the plans in time.

2014 New York Red Bulls Preview: Chemistry and continuity vs. the clock
    [IMG]

Keep on holding on: Thierry Henry played a career-high (for MLS) 2519 minutes last season, and produced a very nice 10 goals and nine assists. Nice for most players, anyway. By Henry's standards ... well, it seemed readily apparent that he'd lost a step. He was still capable of magic, but wasn't able to pick his team up and carry them to results almost single-handed as he'd done for whole swathes of 2012.

New York Red Bulls Held to a 1-1

Forward Thierry Henry scored his first goal of the year, but it was cancelled out by a Vicente Sanchez penalty kick 72nd minute conversion as the New York Red Bulls (0-1-1, 1 pt.) settled for a 1-1 tie in the team's home opener at Red Bull Arena against the Colorado Rapids.
Henry's tally was his 42nd in regular season play and put him in sole possession of second place in club history in that category (Juan Pablo Angel leads with 58). Giovanni Savarese is now in third place (41 goals).

The Red Bulls will head to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Fire next Sunday, March 23 at 3:00 PM (TV: MSG, UniMas). New York will return to Red Bull Arena on March 30, hosting CD Chivas USA at 3:00 PM. Tickets are on sale now by calling 1.877.727.6223 or logging onto tickets.newyorkredbulls.com.

New York had two early chances in the first half. In the second minute, Henry was freed down the right wing and crossed it towards the near post to Bradley Wright-Phillips. Wright-Phillips got a piece of it but Colorado defender Marvell Wynne did just enough to prevent the shot from going on target. Later, Armando headed a Henry free kick over the bar.

On the other end, Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles made two excellent saves on a left-footed shot from Dillon Serna and a redirection from Jose Mari to keep the game scoreless. In the 33rd minute, Rapids midfielder Nick LaBrocca tried to chip Robles, but the Red Bull was back to tip it aside.

New York took the lead in the 57th minute. Sam had possession on the right wing and played a cross towards the back post that was headed in by a diving Henry.

However, Colorado tied the game in controversial fashion after referee Alan Kelly ruled that New York defender Jamison Olave fouled Marvin Chavez in the box. Robles guessed correctly on Sanchez's try, but couldn't reach the Colorado midfielder's shot in the lower right hand corner of the goal.

The Red Bulls put up a late rally to try and take the three points. In second half stoppage time, Armando cut it back to Eric Alexander, whose shot whizzed just wide. Then, Richard Eckersley's cross was met by Henry, but goalkeeper John Berner was there to make the save.

Red Bulls Reserves Down Dutch Lions
Stevenson has goal, assist as New York takes 3-0 victory

    Sunday, March 30, 2014

HARRISON, N.J. – Eric Stevenson had a goal and assist as the New York Red Bulls Reserves took a 3-0 victory against the Dayton Dutch Lions on Sunday evening in the first interleague contest between teams from the MLS Reserve League and USL PRO this season. All three goals for the Red Bulls came in the second half, as Michael Bustamante, pictured, and Matt Miazga also found the back of the net for the hosts.

The first half was played evenly, and the Dutch Lions came out with positive energy in their first game of the season. Dayton looked to stretch the field in possession as it tried to put on loan Columbus Crew forward Ryan Finley and fellow strikers Eli Garner and Cameron Vickers in dangerous positions, but the Dutch Lions were unable to force a serious save from Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara.
