New York Red Bulls Rally to Earn 2-2 Road Tie against Montreal

After conceding a fifth minute goal, Red Bulls midfielder Jonny Steele and forward Peguy Luyindula responded with first half tallies as New York (0-1-4, 4 pts.) earned a 2-2 tie on the road against the Montreal Impact (0-3-2, 2 pts.) at Olympic Stadium Saturday afternoon and extended their unbeaten MLS run to four.
The Red Bulls are back in action on Saturday, April 12, as they will face D.C. United at RFK Stadium at 7:00 PM ET (TV: MSG+). New York will return to Red Bull Arena on Wednesday, April 16, when it hosts the Philadelphia Union at 7:30 PM. The Red Bulls will then complete a two-match homestand on Wednesday, April 23, as they battle the Houston Dynamo at 7:30 PM. Tickets are on sale now for both matches by calling 1.877.727.6223 or logging onto tickets.newyorkredbulls.com.

The Impact took the lead in the fifth minute. Felipe maintained possession in New York's defensive third and slipped it through to an onside Andres Romero, whose curling shot found the lower right hand corner of the net.

Montreal almost made it 2-0 eight minutes later, when Romero's on target volley was cleared off the line by Ibrahim Sekagya.

Within the first half, New York goalkeeper Luis Robles made several of his nine total saves to keep the score 1-0. The Red Bulls broke through on the scoreboard in the 31st minute. Kosuke Kimura chipped it down the right sideline to Lloyd Sam, who gathered the ball and crossed it towards the back post. Steele was there to it first and put it homefrom close range.

The visitors, who were without a number of players Saturday including Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill and Jamison Olave, then took the lead three minutes later. Steele intercepted a Marco Di Vaio pass in midfield and picked out an on-rushing Luyindula. Luyindula took a touch in the box and ripped it over goalkeeper Troy Perkins to make the score 2-1.

Luyindula almost doubled his personal tally four minutes following the break when New York earned a penalty kick after Matteo Ferrari fouled Bradley Wright-Phillips in the box. Perkins guessed incorrectly on the try, but the Frenchman pinged his attempt off the right post.

Montreal tied the game in the 60th minute, as Justin Mapp's in-swinger from the right wing was nodded in by Felipe. Both teams had chances to earn the game-winner in the last third of the match, but neither could record their third tally of the game.

How will New York Red Bulls respond
to "noisy neighbors" New York City FC?

“Sometimes you have a noisy neighbor. You cannot do anything about that. They will always be noisy. You just have to get on with your life, put your television on and turn it up a bit louder.”
    – Sir Alex Ferguson

Finally, Mike Petke knows how Fergie felt. The legendary Manchester United manager made the above memorable quote famous five years ago after getting the best of Manchester City in a derby match between the crosstown rivals.

Red Bulls plan for life with NYCFC, and without Henry
    [IMG]

“We know we have the best soccer experience in the area, if not the country," he said. "So that is not going to change, and we need to keep delivering on that. We need to improve the fan experience in the stadium, so we will absolutely be laser-like focused on everything that happens before game, during the game and after a game as it can be, to make their life as enjoyable as it can be while they're with us.”

Sources: Red Bulls to launch USL Pro team

According to sources, the Red Bulls were leaning towards pinpointing a USL Pro affiliate because they did not want to launch a team without having an environment and playing field that they felt was appropriate.

Ultimately, the club decided it was better to invest in starting a third-division team of its own. That approach would be more cost effective and allows the Red Bulls to have more of a say as to which players play in which games and for how long.

New York will become just the latest MLS club to add a team to the quickly-expanding USL Pro, joining more than a half-dozen others who have already complied with the league’s new mandate.

The New York Red Bulls opened the sixth season of soccer at Red Bull Arena with a 2-0 victory over D.C. United on Sunday evening in Harrison. Bradley Wright-Phillips and Lloyd Sam scored the goals, while Luis Robles earned his first clean sheet of the season.
The Red Bulls set the pace throughout the contest, particularly in the early going. New York opened strong, getting the better of the play early on and setting the tone with several scoring chances.

"That was a good performance," said Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch. "[It was] great to get our first win at home. One of our goals this year has been to be very strong at home and I thought, for the most part, that the game was dictated by our guys and played at our tempo. I thought it was a good result."

That attacking mindset paid off in the 25th minute, when 2014 MLS Golden Boot Winner Bradley Wright-Phillips opened his 2015 account. The Englishmen got on the end of a long outlet pass from Dax McCarty and brought the ball down into space between two defenders. BWP took a touch and fired back across the net, beating D.C. 'keeper bill Hamid with a low shot towards the left post.

The team found another gear after the goal, pressing the D.C. back line and earning several chances in the next few minutes.

The first D.C. test came in the 31st minute, when midfielder Chris Rolfe played in forward Chris Pontius, forcing Robles to make his first of several key saves.

At the half, the Red Bulls were credited with nine attempts on goal and two shots on target, as well as 66% of first-half possession.

Sam struck for the second time in as many games in the 71st minute to give the Red Bulls some breathing room. Brazilian midfielder Felipe caused a turnover just inside the D.C. half of the field with a sliding challenge. The loose ball was collected by Wright-Phillips, who quickly shifted the Red Bulls into attack mode, slotting a ball through the right side of the box for a cutting Sam to blast past Hamid for his second goal of the year.

Robles was credited with five saves on the evening, including a point-blank save on Rolfe from inside the six in the 77th minute. Defender Kemar Lawrence, making his first-career MLS start, blocked a shot from just inside the penalty spot minutes later to preserve the clean sheet.

In the 91st minute D.C. was awarded a penalty after a Matt Miazga challenge in the box. Chris Pontius stepped to the spot and saw his shot sail high over the cross bar.

The Red Bulls sit 1-0-1 through two games. The team is back in action on Saturday, March 28 when they visit Crew SC. Kickoff in Columbus is set for 7:30 p.m. with live television coverage on MSG2.

New York Red Bulls 2, Chicago Fire 1

Dax McCarty almost stole the show and a point in his return to Red Bull Arena, but the New York Red Bulls once again found a way at home.

The Red Bulls used a 71st-minute goal from Kemar Lawrence to beat the Chicago Fire, 2-1, in a tight Eastern Conference affair on Saturday night. The Fire had pulled level earlier in the second half after McCarty fed Nemanja Nikolic in impressive fashion, but Lawrence's slotted effort from the left proved to be the difference.
