With the Yankees' upgraded offer for Twins left-hander Johan Santana now on the table Saturday morning, Yankees' officials are confident that they will sign Santana if a deal is worked out. And the club's internal plan, if center fielder Melky Cabrera is included in the trade, is to switch veteran Johnny Damon from left field back to center field.

The Twins continue to discuss possible deals from other teams, including the Dodgers and Mariners, and they are scheduled to speak with the Red Sox on Saturday afternoon. Boston's offer on the table is for pitcher Jon Lester, center fielder Coco Crisp and minor league infielder Jed Lowrie, and a fourth player -- a minor league pitcher -- is to be determined. The Twins want the Red Sox to add either center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury or pitcher Clay Buchholz to the deal, and there are indications that if they do, that offer is what Minnesota will prefer.

For now, however, the Yankees are right in the thick of the bidding, having decided in internal discussions on Friday to offer pitcher Phil Hughes, rather than Ian Kennedy, into their offer, along with Melky Cabrera and a third player -- in all likelihood, a minor leaguer. The Yankees have told the Twins that the third player cannot be any of their very best young players -- Kennedy or Joba Chamberlain or second baseman Robinson Cano, for example, but a second-tier prospect.

The Yankees, meanwhile, have informed the Twins that they are going to pull their offer off the table soon -- perhaps by Tuesday at the latest -- unless they get an answer. According to Rotoworld, we finally have included Ellsbury in a package for Santana. I seriously do not want to give up Jacboby, he's going to be a special player. I'd be much happier putting Bucholtz in the deal.

From what I'm seeing here's what the offers look like right now

Red Sox: Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie, Jon Lester, Jacboy Ellsbury/Clay Buchholz

Yankees: Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Ian Kennedy, someone else (likely unimportant)

Unless I'm missing something here, who has the (way) better offer??

And I agree we definitely should put Buchholz in the trade as opposed to Ellsbury. You're getting a pitcher back, right? And a damn good one at that. Ellsbury's going to be a terrific center fielder/leadoff guy for years to come, I know it, while Buchholz, despite the no-no, I have yet to be completely convinced.

On another site, someone using sabermetrics suggested that it would take 8 A-Rods to equal the value of 5 Johans. That being said, I'd much rather put in Jacoby.

If it's Ian+Phil, I say no. If it's Phil+... say, Allen Horne, then my mind might change.

In the Ellsbury package, the Sox will not trade Crisp or Lester, but will likely include Masterson and Lowrie. Personally, I think the Sox should go after Dan Haren with Crisp, Lester, Lowrie, and Masterson/Bowden. I'm not a fan of dealing Ellsbury or Buchholz.

I would rather have the Yankees give up their best prospect plus some of their second-tier prospects than see the Red Sox give up Ellsbury. Santana is great, but at 25M per? I think not.

To an extent I agree, but Santana with Dice-K and Beckett in the same rotation with Schilling as the #4 is disgustingly awesome. Ellsbury's going to be something special. Buchholz I don't care about, the Twins can have him if it's for Santana.

Scouts continue to rate Bucholz as the best prospect in the organization. He's special.

Premier, I think you're over rating your prospects (I do the same thing). I think Ellsbury will be great, but not up to your expectations.

I don't rate him as the top in the organization. >=]

Really though I have no problem givingBuchholz upin exchange for another (quite special) pitcher, especiallyif it will create a monster rotation of Santana/Beckett/Matsuzaka/Schilling/Wakefield. Theo and the crew are excellent in the draft, they'll find more good pitchers. We won't need to start filling any major holes in the rotation for a while (i hope). Ellsbury could be our leadoff guy as soon as next year and a ROY in waiting, so that's why I want to hold on to him. Ellsbury then Pedroia gives us a damn good 1-2 in the order.

But the same kind of works in reverse. If the Sox were in serious talks with the Indians about Grady Sizemore, Ellsbury I'd be willing to trade, and Buchholz I'd want to hang on too. Hypothetically speaking of course.
