...the only thing Drew has got going for him is that he can play different positions competently...you might think that with Refsnyder possibly staying, they'd use the two of them in a platoon role depending on the starting pitching...but oddly enough, as bad as Drew has been at the plate, he's actually been worse when facing RHed pitching....go figure.
..."stunt his growth"?...I hear that phrase quite a bit but more times than not, I disagree with it...Zobrist would be a 3 month rental upgrade for the 2nd half, period...Refsnyder would still get some playing time...hey, I like the kid but I don't think he's an every day 2Bman...and don't forget, he had always been a RFer and he's only recently converted to 2B. (Yankee's infinite development wisdom)...and defensively, he's never been very good at 2B. ...if he proves he can hit MLB pitching he may very well end up going back to the OF...or maybe 1B, who knows. ...also keep in mind that if he does somehow become the Yanx' regular 2Bman, he and DiDi still have to learn to work together...there could be a lot of moans and groans and growing pains ahead. ...I hope I'm wrong.
Drew would be the best bet as backup. Ryan plays two games and gets hurt so he's useless. Petit is complete garbage also.
...I never implied that Zobrist is the second coming...but he's a very solid player and carries himself as a consummate professional which is one reason I like him...and he's a contact making switch hitter who plays 2B, SS, and RF. ...not much not to like.
Refsnyder is staying imo, Yanks will go with him until/if he shows poor defensive play or if he can't hold his own as a new rookie with the stick (which I doubt) . It's his time...we wanted him...the Yanks gave him a couple few months to satisfactory demonstrate he wasn't a defensive liability at AAA and they have every reason to believe he'll eventually be an overral offensive improvement over Drew. His time has arrived. Now it's up to him. Some were clamoring for him from opening day despite his defensive struggles learning a new position. And now we're getting cold feet over his defense? It's time to face the music and see how the kid handles himself and what he can or cannot do. Kinda exciting! As for Zobrist, yes he's a good useful rental who also happens to be owed 1.25 more million than Drew at this point and there could still be some other deal in the works at the deadline for some other "better" rental and that 1.25 mil could come in handy.
zobrist would be a really nice upgrade to this team. sitting in first place you can't go into the second half with didi & drew basically shit at the plate. u want a ring cashman has to upgrade a few positions and drew is one.
NTM-Hopefully sooner than latter, Aaron Judge will be playing RF, once he gets used to the more intense competition....which may alleviate others spending a few games in RF, or not......? The BIG 6'7" ??? RF, has a strong arm, haven't seen enough to see just how accurate, and avg in his arm speed, strength and velocity, need to see more..... In the Future's Game, after an 0-1 Count, Judge K'd watching 3 strikes paint the plate, without taking the bat off of his shoulder. On His 2nd att bat (as the DH), he hit a ground ball so damned hard, the 3rd baseman was already playing on the OF edge a step or 2 on the grass, and caught a smoker, He was Lucky to snag, about 12 feet backwards into the OF. Judge beat out the throw, the ball was scorched and hit hard enough, I'm not sure Brooks Robinson could of beat Judge on the throw.......... I hope like Hell Judge can bring some RBI pop to this club in 016 or whatever it takes...... A Big Kid, a Big Strike Zone, yet he seems to protect his plate well, and drew comparisons to Giancarlo Stanton......size, strength, abilities ?
...yup, if not Zobrist, something needs to be done about 7-8-9 spots. Some kind of improvement needs to to be made because as it currently constructed it is very hard for this offense to sustain rallies. I realize that typically, the bottom of the line up are not a team's best hitters, but the Yanx really need more production from those spots. ...if they are fortunate enough to make the PS they will obviously be facing solid pitching where HR or bust offenses are usually made less of a threat.
The bottom 3 has definitely been the Yankees achilles heal this season. But like Steve just mentioned I'm hoping Refsnyder's presence improves that.
^^^...as long as Drew is still on the roster I just don't see Refsnyder as the everyday 2Bman...yes, his bat should be better than Drew's but at what price?...how much of a trade off between the differences in offense vs the differences in defense ?
^^^ but like I already pointed out, oddly enough, as bad as Drew has been, he's actually been even worse vs RHed pitching. (.170 .250 .374 .624 )
I don't see it. Say hello to our little friend - Drew, the "new" backup SS and 2b.....just as some of suspected would eventually happen back in May/early June if/when the Yanks felt Refsnyder was "ready" to be promoted.
