el prez has a point though...do you take down statues of Ceasar or Napoleon or Genghis Khan? The Taliban destroyed the oldest Buddhist shrine on the planet....at some point statues of historical figures or events become art, not really celebration. They should not be adorning government buildings though..put them in a Civil War Museum or on a battlefield, etc...

Reminds me of my genealogy research -- my gx3 grandfather was a confederate soldier (teen ranger) under General Mosby. Being that this side of the family are from Fairfax, Virginia it came to no surprise that I'd find a relative connected to this.

Firstly, let me say that I am glad to see a lot of reasoned, mature, and rational answers in this thread about this subject. I'm seriously impressed.

    There you go. Well said.

Yep. It would seem hypocritical to be selective with what we want to remove from our past. It's no secret that most of our country's past has dealt with a lot of racism and white supremacy over the past 240 years. Why now are we suddenly becoming offended by symbols of the Confederacy?

Well said. I'm not sure how removing statues of Stonewall Jackson and General Lee (who was an officer with the Union, whom declined an offer of Generalship with the North because he genuinely felt that state's rights were being violated; not because he supported Slavery) will be better for our country.

Lee is widely considered to be one of the greatest Generals and military minds who ever lived, and he was much loved by not just the South, but the North as well. And Jackson was also a brilliant military strategist who played a MAJOR role in the Civil War. Both of these men's strategies are still taught today in military colleges.

Exactly. Most people who fly the Confederate Flag today don't view it as a symbol of racism. They view it as being synonymous with freedom, independence, and rebellion.

Well said. It goes back to what I was saying above. Just like not every German soldier was loyal to Nazi Supremacy and the eradication of Jews during WWII, so not every Southern Soldier fought for the continuation of Slavery. And there are many Confederate markings, plaques, sites, and symbols that tell of bravery, sadness, courage, daring, and brilliant leadership in times of war when it comes to soldiers from the South. Trying to white-wash history because it offends our sensitivities doesn't change history. Trying to nitpick every little thing that is offensive to people isn't going to change history either.

History has already happened; it's time to acknowledge it. Not attempt to ignore it.

I disagree. History needs to be rewritten constantly so that society can continue to be brainwashed. I think history class should start with episode 1 of real world and end with kanye fucking a Kardashian.

I read this book "1984" it talked about rewritting history and the importance of it. Really an incredible read when you compare to today's society.

True. Quite of bit of history written is still waiting to be written in truth rather than the victors view or even some level of wash.
