While it's impossible to tell what max money would be next year with the CBA up in the air, if you use the current salary cap and team payrolls for 2011-2012 then : New Jersey, likely New York, Toronto, Indiana, likely Washington, Memphis, likely Denver, Minnesota, likely OKC, Pheonix, and Sacramento. Alot of that room would be used on their own free agents, but if Greg is healthy and plays well when he comes back there are alot of teams with room to spare and holes at center.
So what are the chances that a team offers Greg max money just because they know that we would HAVE to match, regardless of whether they wanted him or not?
Nah, I think the Knicks or Nets will be too focused on getting an actual star to play with Amare or Brook Lopez. I could see OKC doing it, or the Grizzlies if they actually have money.
What's the market? Mello and then what. It only takes one team to make the offer and if Oden is healthy he is worth a lot of .money
I don't know if with his injury history that any team goes full max on an offer to Greg even if he is healthy this year, but I could see OKC/Minn/Toronto going 12mil per or something, which I think would be alot more than the frontoffice wants to pay or could have gotten him for now.
Because he feels badly and wants to do the Blazers a solid. Right? The fact is that he and his representation would have been bargaining from a position of weakness to enter into contract negotiations with the Blazers, and he almost has to gamble on a mostly healthy and productive season to improve his market value and get paid what he thinks he's due.
it wouldn't be a "low offer". It would be around Andrew Bynum money, which would have been probably cheaper than what is paid for him next summer barring another injury.
I think you grossly overestimate Oden's value around the league and secondly I think you are failing to account for contracts in the next collective bargaining agreement, which most people assume will be far less favorable to players.
I would have made an effort to re-sign him with an incentive laden contract. Now, our chances of losing him probably rise by a large margin.
OKC with over $20+ mil next summer http://www.storytellerscontracts.com/ OKC with Durant, Westbrook and Oden would be very tough but we can match if we give a qualifier
So you really think some team is going to throw crazy ass money on him, when that contract will almost certainly be un-insurable? There's more than just potential production being considered here when it comes to how much risk teams will be willing to take on him.
