That's what I thought, but apparently "principal" can be used as an adjective also I found this article over at Realgm, where one of their editors added a note: Not sure if it's accurate, though. Wouldn't an $80mil deal be above the max in the summer of 09-10 if the cap is set between $50-53mil?
I'm surprise that Portland gave Roy the player option on the 5th year. Sounds like Portland did completely cave. I mean I could understand them taking this long and giving Roy 5 years guaranteed, but not the player option.
Listening the to Fan they reported it. JQ talk to Roy's agent and the final deal is 5 years max with 5th year the player's option.
Well the only other option was not to sign him. Again this was expected. They tried to gain control of the 5th year and couldn't get it. That is what took so long. The money was not the issue. It was the 5th year. You had to assume that Roy would win out, because it's not that big of a loss to the Blazers. But they tried anyway and lost. i am sure they are not losing any sleep over it. At that amount Roy won't opt out.
So going with this theory of leverage and nothing to lose, why would the Blazer make this offer now? If they have nothing to lose and have all the leverage, why wouldn't they continue to wait, it's in their best interest to wait.
Maybe they changed their mind. Maybe they decided that it wasn't a fight worth fighting. Maybe ticket sales are up. Maybe ticket sales are down. Maybe Paul Allen or Vulcan had additional money cleared to spend on Roy. Or maybe they were stalling for a month just because they could. Because they had all the leverage and Roy had none during that time. Ed O.
Ya, I agree that there is very little chance that Roy will opt out. He can't get near the same money any where else. Roy would really have to want to get out of Portland to opt out and the only thing that might make him want to is a ring. Hopefully he'll get that here.
Actually, Ed, I'm pretty sure they did it just to piss off ODENISGOD so that it would boost activity on sportstwo.com. Thus, making Blazer fans love the organization that much more after so much anticipation.
Real GM is reporting the deal was for 80 million and less than the maximum....with the idea being there would be money left on the table for Greg and LaMarcus to get their extensions. http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/60993/20090805/roy_agrees_to_$80m_extension/
They also say that the max contract under the current year would be $87m... I am pretty sure that's not correct. Code: Year: 1 2 3 4 5 Raise Total Dollars: 13758000 15202590 16647180 18091770 19536360 1444590 83235900 I'd be interested to see where they get $87m. It's hard to know whether they heard $80m and assumed it wasn't a max deal or heard it wasn't a max deal and worked back. Either way I doubt numbers from any source at this point. Ed O.
What is the maximum salary for 2009-10? In my math, above, I used the amount from the Salary Cap FAQ of $13758000. That, with a 10.5% raise from the first year, adds up to $83235900 over five years. Next year is a guess since we don't know the cap level, but if it drops to near $50m, then the maximum salary should be about $12.5m, which would put a five year max contract at $75625000 with the 10.5% of first year raises. If anyone sees something wrong with these numbers, please correct me. I will update my Excel sheet. Ed O.
