Reviews of our Summer League players

That shows you shouldn't get too high on SL players. You need an example to show you shouldn't get too low. (Derrick Rose?)

 

Both Frazier and Crabbe played very well, Crabbe is similiar to Batum in having very good understanding of team basketball and being a very good complementary player. I think he could fill his role even if not on the same level, could at least be a "poor man's Batum". Frazier has confidence, swagger, he is pass-first but can score, at some point he was first or 2nd in the SL in assists, he has kind of a Damian attitude about him, he's a leader on the court, I liked him very very much.

You had to be kidding if you thought AC looked like a Point-Forward.

 

OK, not a Point-Forward but if we had to play with CJ as Point-Guard, he's the one player I would put next to him to cover for the lack of PG skills

 

And weren't you kidding when you talked about Orton; I think i can pretty much guarantee he will not be on an NBA roster this year.

 

I liked him, he has good basketball IQ, big body, good hands. I think he could be a 3rd-string Center.

 

What worries me about Crabbe is how he could record 7 turnovers and 10 PFs in any summer league game. If he's our facilitor at SF I'm concerned. Yeah I get it - it's summer league. But damn. He's a 3rd year player and should be one of the best on the court. Maybe I'm being too hard on him, but at least his offense looked pretty good.

 

Because I don't want to get ridiculed by someone, I will just say that some played well and some played poorly

 

Both teams played hard...

 

Crabbe played hard on both ends, he was very active, maybe more than he was used to, but I think he played the best basketball since I've seen him. He made some mistakes but they weren't because of low basketball IQ, moreso about getting used to a role that was bigger than his usual.

 

Russell looks so much like Exum. His athleticism isn't going to translate that well on this level.

KAT finished the SPL with as many fouls as he has rebounds. Super skilled though. He's like a 7'0" Al Horford.

Porzingis will end up being the best player in this draft. I hate it that NY landed him.

Aiight here's mine

Frazier- Meh. He keeps his dribble alive but I actually don't think his vision is that great and tends to get tunnel vision too often. I won't even get into his shot or his defense. A third PG at best.

Crabbe- Was very impressed. Showed a little more shot versatility than I thought he had. I've always thought he was a good defender and that hasn't changed. I think he's got an outside shot of starting at SG.

Thomas- He might be undersized but he does a lot of good things. He never seems out of control and I like his low post game. Don't know how it would translate against bigger and more skilled big men though but I definitely think he should be on an NBA roster somewhere.

Orton- lol

Moultrie- Showed an ability to shoot midrange shots. Nothing else stuck out. He should go to Europe and be a key contributor ala marcus slaughter.

Dawkins- one dimensional and doesn't do it at a level that'll make him stick. Probably should head overseas.

James- shoot first second and third. A SG in a PGs body. He belongs on the and1 tour.

Montero- already gave my thoughts on plenty other posts. A good project. About as raw as it gets but has rare skills that can't be coached. See you in 2016. Maybe. Hopefully.

 

We don't need Crabbe to be a facilitator. We need him to play well on offense (which you mentioned he did pretty well) and play solid D which I think he did pretty well. Personally I was happy with how Crabbe looked.

 

Crabbe looked more energized after the first summer league game, it's like he's found another gear and added that floater tear drop shot on the move. He's always been an active defender.

 

If Crabbe is going to be a successful player for us or anyone in the future, he needs to let it loose. Guy plays tight/tense/worried. He just needs to let it fly and get that shooters mentality.

 

He doesn't normaly has that shooter's mentality though, he's sometimes too unselfish, but he can score, he has the skills.
I see a lot of resemblence between him and Nico, I think he could fill in nicely for him even if in a smaller role. He has the same team-oriented, high IQ basketball, plays very good D. Needs to adjust to being a more important cog which should take some time but I think he'll do alright.

 

Thomas is 26, Vonleh is 19. It will come with experience. As for player reviews, Grades are based on their SL performance and also on how they might fit with this version of the Blazer roster:

Frazier: Nice Summer League PG but his inability to shoot from the outside or finish in traffic will keep him from rotation minutes. Pounds the air out of the ball much too often but needs it to be effective. SL - B....Blazers - D

Crabbe: Shot it well and showed a little more aggressiveness. Still concerned about his complete inability to create shots for anyone else or to pass at all. Also, as a 3rd year pro, I don't want to see you fouling out of SL games or having 7 TO's either. SL - B.....Blazers - C

Vonleh: Some people still question his ability to shoot. So far from '3' he is 38% in college, 48% as a rookie and 50% in SL. Limited attempts but has taken advantage at a high rate when he does shoot. Solid rebounder, moves his feet on the perimeter better than I expected, has a nice left hand in deep, not a shot-blocking threat and doesn't finish real well at the rim in traffic yet. SL - B+....Blazers B-

Connaughton: I really thought he would show better. 4-year college guy with athleticism and high BBIQ but came away disappointed if that is possible from a rookie 2nd round Draft pick. Decent spot up shooter but thought he'd be better especially on wide-open looks. Does hustle and play with heart but his athleticism doesn't seem to translate to the court very well. Montero: He really only got minutes in the final game so will mostly go off of that although he did have one of the nicer passes in the tournament in just a couple minutes in a previous game. After questionable shot selection, showed much more restraint and shot at a very efficient rate. Almost had a double-double and picks up a lot of loose ball rebounds with quick hands. Too many TO's which is par for SL but also hit the open man very often who just didn't make the shot. Has one of the better handles on the Blazer roster right now and that should only get better with experience around Pros. He is the one player who from beginning of SL to the end showed the most improvement to me. SL - B....Blazers - C
