Purehoops- I like Bell as an NBA player but West gave up two first rounders for Bell who would've been there ten picks later(when memphis picked again) and Dukie Jones who is a huge athelte and a good defender, a legit prospect but who would have been available in the 30's. The point is West could have gotten both players without trading the 13th overall pick. He could've added a PG like Luke Ridnour, Reece Gaines or Zoran Planic, a post player like Brian Cook or David West or a shooter like Zarko Carbarkapa, Alexsander Pavlovic or Maciej Lampe as well as Jones and Bell. Bell at 26, Jones in the 2nd...he probably could've gotten Jones for a future 2nd and cash... Sunsfan and Azballa- I think the Suns got a good player in Barabosa as well. I'm a huge fan and think he's a better prospect than Reece Gaines who went 15th, he was a good fit in San Antonio and is in a similar situation in Phoneix where he doesn't need to lead the team right away and can focus on basketball 1st, English 2nd. Oh, and no more fighting on my posts, you may or may not be kids, but please don't act like them. Or at least start a new post and leave mine out of it.
Rocko... Troy Bell was finally gettin a lil respect in the draft and Minnesota was on the verge of takin him... West is a basketball GENIUS and knows what he is doing... he did not wanna take the chance of not being able to grab him Im sayin it right now... Troy Bell is gunna be good in the NBA... and your gunna forget that West gave up "so much" for him...
Remember....I'm not saying Bell won't be good. To the contrary I think he has a shot at being an excellent 3rd guard. What I'm saying is that West could have still drafted Bell without giving up the 13th pick...and it still doesn't explain using the 20th for Dahantay Jones when better players were available and Dahantay could've been had 15 picks later. West has shown a good sense when drafting in the past, but the NBA is definitely a 'what have you done for me lately' type of league and What has West done for the Grizzlies so far? He grabbed Mike Miller but gave up Gooden and Gordon Giricek...personally I wouldn't have traded Gooden for Miller straight up and to give up the promising Giricek too....is Miller even anything but a shooter? To me, he's just one of many decent swing-men in the L. Even if Bell and Jones turn into stars, the fact remains that West could have easily drafted both them without giving up the 13th overall pick and he missed out on chance to draft a quality player.
I think Jerry West has something else up his sleeve. This guy has proven time and time again he can spot talent. Everyone has jumped on his case with the Mike Miller trade, but the Grizzlies simply didn't have room to play Gooden. They have Gasol & Battier at those positions already. I think the Grizzlies started winning more after they dealt those two players. Mike Miller is a decent player and he gave them another shooter and a much needed scorer. Jerry West traditionally builds his team on athleticism and quickness. Bell & Jones are both great athletes and defenders. Jerry West is either found two hidden gems, or he has lost his touch. The Grizzlies have a lot to do before the season starts. Jason Williams, Earl Watson, Brevin Knight are still on the team. Also Wesley Person and Dickerson are in the guard spot. Maybe the Grizzlies drafted Bell and/or Jones for another team and they will be packaged along with Stromile for a player. You just never know with Jerry West.
I think Jerry West always knows somethin we dont know... just watch out for Troy Bell is all I can say...
During Miller's stint with the Grizzlies he averaged 12.8 ppg. Gooden averaged 12.5 (and stepped it up in the playoffs for 14ppg and 12.7 boards against Ben Wallace no less). Giricek averaged 11.2 ppg while with the Griz.....I really don't see how they added scoring by giving up Giricek and Gooden for Miller....Gooden and Giricek are both as effective offensively as Miller and West gave up BOTH of them for miller. Giricek can shoot as well as penetrate and Gooden is a hard-working offensive threat in the post, which are for more valuable than jump-shooters in the L (especially jump shooting swing-men like Miller. There are dozens of them...just ask Lamond and Tracy Murray about their careers). Also, Miller will probably never be anything but a decent scorer while Gooden proved in the playoffs against Ben Wallace that he has a shot at being a star in this league. West made a mistake with that deal, plain and simple and with no real PG on his roster he passed on the chance to add Luke Ridnour or Reece Gaines, In my book that's two bad trades for West. Remember this trade is poor NOT because he drafted Bell and Jones but because he could've drafted Ridnour or Gaines AS well as Bell and Jones by not doing Boston a favor.
Ridnour is just gunna be a waste of money... i think it was shape that said they were so stocked at the PF/SF position so they got rid of him for the best... Battier, Gasol, Stro... I mean these guys have their own rotation and need playin time... Im not gunna further pursue Jerry's route of choice... hes knows what hes doin and they Grizz are going to be good within a few year...
[quote name='"purehoops"']Ridnour is just gunna be a waste of money... quote] Ridnour might start for the sonics.
purehoops- read above carefully....the point is not that Bell isn't going to be good, but that he could've drafted bell without giving up the 13th pick...even if Bell averages a million points a game, West still didn't need to give away 13th overall choice to get him.
ive read it... who cares how much he gave up... im not going to further argue this anymore... the fact is the Grizz has so much talent right now it doesnt matter... West felt like Bell was worth a 13 so he probably was... get over how much he gave up for him... its beyond the point...
