Roger Moore showed that Bond could be played differently from Sean Connery. Moore was a suave, upper crust/sophisticated, ladies man. Connery was a hard, blue collar/get his hands dirty, man's man. Neither was "the worst Bond" - both were good. As a kid, of course, I went for the man's man, but others liked Moore better.
The thing I loved about Roger Moore's Bond was the refined class. There really hasn't been a Bond since with that British suave, debonair touch that he had since. Dalton came off as kind of quirky and a little forced. Craig tried to update the role with a blunt edge and take out the finer appeal completely. But Moore could kill a man and then grab Baron de Rothchild's and complain about the temperature. That is what James Bond is all about and Moore understood this completely. RIP Mr. Bond.
To me Roger Moore had the dry humor you find in the Bond novels....he pulled that off much better than any other Bond......Clive Owen never smiles..can't see him pulling off the wit....Brosnan and Connery did well with it but were better in the action scenes than Moore....Moore was actually pretty funny
Have to say that Moore was the Bond I knew growing up... which is why I thought Bond was crap. He merged Carry On humor with Bond. THAT SAID, his first movie Live and Let Die is actually pretty decent. And has one of the very few good Wings tunes...
I grew up with the books...then Connery was my first movie bond....Connery was great but when Moore came into the franchise...he brought more playboy and humor to the role...probably my favorite would be Brosnan
Live and Let Die is my favorite too. Just like the whole New York/Blaxploitation and New Orleans vibe they used. I liked Octopussy alot. Enjoyed Kamal Khan as the Villian. Story kind of turned when they did the whole Circus Shit though.
It isn't that Roger Moore wasn't a good Bond, it was that those 70s movies weren't very good. Not his fault. My least favorite Bond is Pierce Brosnan. Guy had to squint to try to look tough. Didn't work.
He was very nearly portrayed by Will Smith, who was given the role, but turned it down. Smith was also in talks to be Captain America. Marlon Wayans very nearly portrayed Robin beside Michael Keaton's Batman in Batman Returns, then beside Val Kilmer in Batman Forever, but was replaced by Chris O'Donnell. Wayans still recieves residuals. Speaking of Superman and Batman, the only actor to portray both in film, is Ben Affleck. Also, the first Batman Film was directed by Andy Warhol in 1964, Batman/Dracula, but without consent from DC comics.
See, I'm of the opposite view. I didn't like Craig because he seemed too "street", not suave enough. I liked Remington Steel Bond because he emphasized the refined aspect of the Bond character. Personally I wish they would have given Henry Cavill the role 11 years ago instead of going with Daniel Craig, but I can understand them viewing him as much too young at that point.
There were two other actors who portrayed James Bond that I missed, American actor Barry Nelson in a 1954 tv adaption of Casino Royale, making him the first actor to portray James Bond, and actor David Niven in 1967's Casino Royale, though that one was more of a spoof
The only one besides the two above (Nelson and Niven)I haven't seen is George Lazenby. I have heard he wasnt very good.
I thought he was fine. I liked the fact that he was humble enough to mock himself at the end of the opening scene.
