Rain Forces Busy Monday At Roland Garros

The Roland Garros first round got off to a soggy start on Day One, with persistent rain forcing the cancellation or postponement of 11 of the 16 matches on the schedule.

No. 17 seed Nick Kyrgios, 19th-seed Benoit Paire, Igor Sijsling, Teymuraz Gabashvili and Andrey Kuznetsov were the lone first-round winners on Sunday, quickly wrapping up their openers before the skies opened. Fifth seed Kei Nishikori wasn't as fortunate. The Japanese will sleep on a two-set lead overSimone Bolelli, owning a 6-1, 7-5, 2-1 advantage when play was postponed at 6:30pm local time.

Djokovic Opens With Ease In Roland Garros

Novak Djokovic's quest for a career Grand Slam began with ease on Tuesday at Roland Garros. The World No. 1 bypassed Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to stretch his undefeated streak to 12-0 in first-round play in Paris. The Serb broke Lu seven times and hit 34 winners to 22 unforced errors. He also won nearly twice as many points as Lu, 92-55.

Nadal powers his way to Grand Slam double-century

Facundo Bagnis was living the dream. Two games up in the opening set against Rafa Nadal in the nine-time champ’s own kingdom, Philippe-Chatrier Court, and smacking winners for fun, looking like a world-beater and presumably feeling like one.

It was as if Nadal had forgotten to get out of bed. He could have been playing in sky-blue pyjamas, so completely askew was his timing and so many errors of the unforced variety was he handing out like sweeties. And now he was finding himself 30-0 down on serve too.

And then, alas for Bagnis, he woke up from his daydream….and so did Nadal.

The rest was as predictable as it was painful to behold, with Nadal recovering to win that game and then sending the 26-year-old Argentine to the sort of dark place on Chatrier that so any of the Spaniard’s victims must have felt in the past as Bagnis got pummelled 6-3 6-0 6-3 in one hour 44 minutes.

Sam Stosur sweeps through to semi-finals at Roland Garros

TSVETANA Pironkova is the latest fallen French Open rival to jump on Sam Stosur’s bandwagon after the Queenslander swept into the Roland Garros semi-finals.

Now only two wins from a second major, Stosur will face Spanish fourth seed Garbine Muguruza for a place in Saturday’s decider.

And Pironkova, who was eclipsed 6-4 7-6 (8-6) by Stosur, believes the 2011 US Open champion can go all the way.

Williams falls to Muguruza in straight sets in final at Roland Garros

Garbine Muguruza grew up watching the Williams sisters win Grand Slam titles and transform the way women’s tennis was played.

Muguruza admired them. She loved the way the American siblings played. The way they competed. The way they carried themselves.

“I really like that they were very ambitious,” Muguruza said. “Every time they were playing, those girls, they really [wanted] to win. They’re very powerful. ... They intimidate the other people.”

Now, at age 22, Muguruza is a major champion herself, taking the French Open title away from Serena Williams with a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the final Saturday at Roland Garros.
