This ís bad. Will Rose play again in playoffs? I doubt it. Will Nate Robinson really an option? He did some nice things, but is he the solution? I don't think. Netherless I don't expect anyone to be the solution this season besides a healthy Rose (now very unlikely). Too sad...
I'm not joking. The guy suffered multiple knee surgeries to play at MVP level for us. He should get paid is all.
The Bulls can get an exception for all or part of his salary, but I think he still counts against the cap. They cannot renegotiate.
BTW, I remarked in the game thread (Bucks) about how Thibs put Rose back in with 1 minute left in a big blowout. I presume it was to test out the knee.
Crushing news. Sad that the Derrick Rose story appears to be a tragedy. And.... a tragedy for the Bulls and Bulls fans.... since so much of the available salary has and will be locked up in a guy that can't deliver. NFL seems to do it right at times. Give the guy a big signing bonus to reward past play and set them up financially (if they can manage money) while paying for production going forward and allow the team to get out in a case like this. Personally, I think the Bulls will be about the same this year as we've seen in the regular season without Rose. The minutes should go to Brooks, Snell and hopefully McDermott will show that he does not totally suck in about 10 minutes a night. Kirk should be a 15-20 guy off the bench. If Brooks can deliver in the increased role (i think he can) the Bulls will have better spacing on O, have a couple of true 3 point threats on the floor and be able to be an effective offense, IMO. On D he's a bit weaker than Rose and Rose was of course a more dynamic player (even this season) and better playmaker. But.... from what I've seen from Rose so far this season.... he wasn't a great NBA player anymore.
Yup, that was a great game. Its been on-again / off-again quite a lot this season with Rose (and really, since he signed that huge contract). Bulls needed at least an all-star level Rose to win a title, IMO. I still think they will be one of the stronger teams in the East (which is what they are now) the remainder of the season with the current roster, but you never know, this whole thing might implode. I just think that most of the guys are pros and have reasons to perform well and, to be honest, the team has been hijacked by Rose and Team Rose.
I think we were watching him develop a different kind of all-star level game. One where he shoots a lot of 3 pointers and goes to the rim selectively. Since he never really had a great 3 point shot, but extremely good mid-range form, he was practicing his 3pt shot in game situations. I expected him to be another Curry like player in a season or two. Look at that Cavs game, though, he only took 2 of 24 shots from 3pt. So he could still play his old style, he was choosing not to.
Yup, that's one way to look at it. If he could do what he did in that Cavs game 2 out of 3 games in the regular season and playoffs especially, the Bulls would be in great shape. But, he's hurt again. So that's that.
I think he may be back before playoffs. This is closer to the Westbrook injury situation than Rose's original or second surgery.
There's the "disabled player exception," but that cannot be requested after January 15. The team may have some insurance on Rose's health, but as you say, there's nothing to be done capwise.
If he's done, then they'd use the disabled player exception next season and the season after (potentially).
As soon as I heard the news, "Taps" started playing in my head...not only for the Bulls' chances this season, but for the current Rose-centric model the Bulls have been using for the past 6 years or so. Time to rebuild. Time to move on.
Call me crazy, but I would not be surprised if the Bulls are a stronger regular season team, post DRose injury, this season. (assuming that Brooks and Snell can continue producing, which I think they can)
If he's done-done, like never playing again, the Bulls can apply for a "career ending injury exemption" one year from the date of Rose's last game. This way, instead of having their cap saddled with Rose's $20mil+ through the 2016-17 season, they'd only be saddled through the 2015-16 season.
