Re: Ruffin to Portland Perhaps. That could be consistent with the salary cap FAQ. In that case, Portland would be setting up a deal where Portland takes a bit more salary to start with, so that the deal stays within the 125% with or without the TE.
Re: Ruffin to Portland The West is weak NOW, I want our guys to make it through the firstround, it'll really go along ways in gaining experience..as long as we dont bet the house, we need to make a trade
Re: Ruffin to Portland TE's good for a year. (Like, say, Draft Day). KP can do some GM Magic with 2.9M in free money added to 3M cash.
Re: Ruffin to Portland You know, if this is part of a larger deal (which I think it is)...then kudos to Prithcard & Penn for effectively confusing everyone as to what they are up to..... I am not a big fan of Jefferson....less of Ridnour...Carter, I find appealing, but not for the rumoured ransom that Thorn wants for him...I can't see CHI dealing Deng, even though adding Salmons is a little curious....Hope for Butler....I have no idea...just enjoying the roller coaster ride....
Re: Ruffin to Portland Ah ha! Thanks. That clears it up. So, if Portland traded the TE with RLEC, they'd have two "slots" that they could use to fit incoming players into. Which isn't a problem. Portland wouldn't be using the TE as a way to make salaries match, just as a goodie for the other team. They could trade this TE for some $2.5 million crap the other team has and trade RLEC+more for the actual object of their desire. Portland doesn't need to combine the two "slots." Result: Portland gets who they want and the other team gets both RLEC (including the 80% cash savings) and the TE (more cash savings).
Re: Ruffin to Portland Yes! It allows Portland to sweeten things a bit by taking back crap... but not by giving up less salary than they normally could. I think I might have just confused myself a bit more. But I know what I mean. Ed O.
Re: Ruffin to Portland The "cash savings" aspect of a trade with Portland HAS to look very appealing. Especially if you're the Bucks.
Re: Ruffin to Portland It doesn't HAVE to be crap. For instance, our 2.9 exception could get us Joe Alexander added to the RJeff trade.
Re: Ruffin to Portland Yup. It seems like Portland could give a team somewhere between $6.5 - 7 million of instant cash savings. That seems huge right now...especially for a team that is over the luxury tax level by less than that amount.
Re: Ruffin to Portland It doesn't have to be, but if it IS crap, it's that much more appealing. Like, suppose Portland were to go back to Charlotte or Washington and offer an added $2.5-3 million of instant savings in a deal for Wallace or Butler. That might tip the balance.
Re: Ruffin to Portland The only reason why we would trade for the exception is for another trade before the deadline, otherwise we would have just held onto Ike. The beauty of the trade exception is that it's money off their cap, but no player sitting on their bench. It saves more money than if they had straight up traded for Ike.
Re: Ruffin to Portland The Blazers will save close to $2m by making this deal. I think that would be enough reason to move Ike, given how little he's played this year. I hope that another deal is coming, but at this point I would be more surprised than I was this time yesterday. Ed O.
Re: Ruffin to Portland You have to have a player in that spot. So even though RLEC and Outlaw for RJeff and Alexander works http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=dbzkfv MIL may balk at that. But we can say that we'll take charlie bell with Rjeff, for TO and RLEC, and then do 2 2nds and our TE for Joe Alexander if they think he's not going to work
Re: Ruffin to Portland Totally disagree, Nate. Ike is nothing for us after the deadline except 3M in cap space. Right now, we have 3M in cap space from him PLUS a 3M exception that can be used today, at the draft, or at next trade deadline. the 3M TE we got from NYK for Zach ended up getting us Rudy.
Re: Ruffin to Portland Really? I don't think the diminished time reduces the odds. Once it got into the last day or two, I think a deadline deal (one that happens in the final hours) became the most likely occurrence. If anything, maneuvering for this trade exception slightly increased the odds of a significant deal in my mind. I agree that the cash savings are enough reason to do the Diogu deal...but it still adds one more weapon to KP's arsenal in trying to strike a deal.
Re: Ruffin to Portland well, not really. like ed o has said, if portland was to make no more moves they would save some money by doing this. and saving money isn't ever a bad thing. and even if portland was to not make a trade before the deadline, they still have the trade exception until a year from now, so that would cover the draft, the offseason, and all the way until next deadline.
Re: Ruffin to Portland I think it's psychological for me. Trying to prepare for the worst (no deal; I doubt KP makes a BAD deal) and be pleasantly surprised by anything more I want to get something for Frye. I want value for RLEC. Just I don't want to be too disappointed if we don't. Ed O.
Re: Ruffin to Portland I don't know about you, but I watched Ike before every game hoist rainbow three pointers from the corner during shot around. It sure didn't look to me like a guy that cared one way or the other if he played or not. Hell, all he had to do here was not suck and he would have played. They tried giving him minutes a few times and he fell flat on his face.
