But is mainstream society at that inflection point yet? I think you might be right but I bet there is still a great deal of fear and risk involved for that transcendent superstar who finally takes that 'leap of faith.'
Yes. Its almost hip to be gay nowadays in mainstream society. Sure, there are a lot of people who are homophobic still and violently against the lifestyle, but as far as the media and pop culture goes, anyone who gives confirmed homosexual Russell Westbrook shit will be shunned from society.
Go walk down the street holding another dude's hand vs. walk down the street wearing a bunch of Donald Trump shit on. Which scenario do you think will be more prone to violence or harassment?
I'm not so sure about that. On a surface level it would seem it's "hip to be gay" in mainstream society, but I think there might be a bit of a closeted bigotry going on out there, at least from the kids and parents who actually buy the jerseys and shoes. It's really just a question of a major star breaking the silence and then letting the chips fall where they may.
depends where you are in my opinion...in Silverlake or West Hollywood you'd be absolutely correct...in Tulsa, I'm not so sure about that
Personally, I hope the first NBA player to come out has better fashion sense. Oi vey! Martina Navratilova was out in her prime. I saw her play several times. She always had a big cheering section of lesbian fans.
I don't mind at all editing, deleting and moving threads. Sounds like you guys are tired of the hands free approach here and want the mods to "police" the forum more.
If RW announced he was gay, would that affect KD's free agency? Probably. Would he be bucking to leave OKC? Very likely. So, yeah, it affects basketball and even the blazers. My argument isn't with the content of the thread, it's that it's years old and not corroborated.
Based on the hopes of some in this thread, I'm not sure Collins counts. My recollection was that he announced, everyone rejoiced, and then he wasn't offered a contract the next year. You can be an engineer with long hair, but you'd better be good at what you do. You can be an athlete who is gay, but you'd better be good at what you do. You can be out of the norm, but you'd better be good at what you do.
