Start it high so people who picked expensive teams don't get discouraged... We could scale it back over time to something more reasonable.
Good call. Also since there's not as many teams as the actual NBA the talent on a given team will be higher thus will cost more money.
I don't know if that is going to work... does the sim program we're using allow for leagues smaller than 30? Might be easier to just fill up the extra team or two with unpicked players.
Why should we start it high? It's not the fault of those of us who drafted wisely to bail out the guys who just picked the most expensive players.
Well the salary cap is about $56m, but if you took all the payrolls and averaged them, you'd get about $70m. Since that's what we're doing starting with a cap above the CBA's current figure is reasonable. 70-75-80, whatever it lands at, is fine by me. We didn't really have a set of rules in place when the draft began so to enforce them retroactively seems a bit draconian. I'm sure that the teams that overspent will pay for it sooner than later. Selecting a team with reasonable cap flexibility will wind up being an advantage if this league lasts.
If I understand correctly, no team is going to be immediately punished. We finish the draft, give folks a chance to look at the result and make any trades they want to make, then we start simming. So if you've drafted a team that's over the luxury tax, you get to play the season that way. You can still, I suppose, make any trades you want to make, and sign minimum guys if you need to. If you're a drafted a team under the tax, you can go over it via trades or signings during the course of the season. So I don't see any draconian consequences for a team that's over the luxury tax in the here and now. In fact, I see it as the opposite. By drafting an expensive team it ought to, right?, be a better team. Now, when we've finished the simulated season, there will be consequences (if you're over the tax and not a contender), but even then you can still make trades and draft players, and whatnot. Perhaps some people will walk away, but I'd guess we'll sim through seasons pretty quick, so it's not like a player will be doomed to suck ass forever.
An option not listed is: "go with the max salaries of the actual NBA teams." If the Lakers can spend $90M, we should be able to. It's reality.
lakers do not necessarily equal reality in that they are one of the exceptions. reality is there are alot of teams losing money, reality is there are alot of teams slashing payroll, reality is there are 29 other teams that didnt win the title last year, reality is there are 27 other teams in smaller media markets. we can expound upon this later, i am merely putting this cap in effect for draft purposes.
So say we go over the 80M but most of them are expirings (ala Knicks). When is the deadline to get under? Like could we play out the season for the inaugural season, because I know if we go over, it will be really hard to get under say we already picked 3-4 12+M contracts type guys.
So once we get to a certain point, and can't afford anyone, do minimum contracts actually count as the 400k or w/e it is? Or are they free when counting the cap?
