Earthquakes Lose 3-0 on the Road to Real Salt Lake

The San Jose Earthquakes lost 3-0 on the road to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday night. RSL scored three first-half goals to take control of the match and the Earthquakes could not get back in the game in the second half.

Real Salt Lake jumped on the board first behind a goal from Javier Morales. Robbie Findley received the ball on the right wing from Morales and broke into the box. After making some space for himself, he hit a low shot that was saved by Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch. Morales pounced on the rebound and put it into the back of the net for a 1-0 RSL advantage.

Ned Grabavoy put RSL up 2-0 with a blast from inside the box 33 minutes into the game. Morales got open on the left wing, and his cross found Grabavoy, who finished into the upper corner.

Five minutes later, Findley got a goal of his own. After a Joao Plata cross was cleared directly to Findley, he curled a right-footed shot inside the far post for a 3-0 advantage.

The Quakes had a handful of good chances in the second half, but RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando was up to the task. He stopped a Marvin Chavez drive early in the half, before denying Chris Wondolowski and Steven Lenhart's close-range efforts.

The Earthquakes take next weekend off due to FIFA International Match play before returning to the field on Saturday, June 15 against the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The match begins at 6 p.m. PT live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes part ways with longtime head coach Frank Yallop
    [IMG]

Less than a year removed from a stunning run to the Supporters’ Shield, the San Jose Earthquakes announced Friday that they have parted ways with head coach Frank Yallop.

Assistant coach Mark Watson has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2013 season for the Quakes, who have struggled to find the same form this season after posting the best regular-season record in Major League Soccer last season.

San Jose are just 3-6-6 this year despite returning the bulk of their lineup, and are currently winless in their past four matches. Watson will make his debut when the Quakes return to action on June 15 at the Colorado Rapids.

Yallop said in a statement that he met with team president David Kaval and general manager John Doyle earlier this week, and the three men agreed it was time for the club to move in a different direction.

San Jose Earthquakes Pick up Road Win against Colorado Rapids, 2-1

Steven Lenhart and Sam Cronin scored to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Earthquakes (4-6-6, 18 pts.) burst out of the gates to take the lead in the 11th minute. Justin Morrow sent a pass in the air that Alan Gordon nodded forward to his strike partner. Lenhart pulled the ball back and then fired between a pair of defenders from 23 yards out, beating Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the top shelf. The goal was Lenhart's first of 2013.

Cronin was next to the scoreboard in the 52nd minute. San Jose's central midfield pairing teamed up to create the chance as Rafael Baca looped a perfectly weighted pass over Colorado's defense to Cronin on the run. The 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star nominee slotted his shot past Irwin for his first career game-winning goal.

Colorado (5-5-5, 20 pts.) pulled one back in the 67th minute, but couldn't find an equalizer. Brian Mullan sent a cross into the box and found Nathan Sturgis open at the top of the 6-yard box. Sturgis leapt and headed in his third goal of the season.

San Jose held an advantage in possession for the night, including a 57-43 margin in the second half.

The match was also Mark Watson's first as interim head coach, marking the sixth time an Earthquakes head coach has won his first game on the sidelines. San Jose's head coaches are 6-1-0 all-time in their first game with the club.

The Earthquakes return to action on Saturday, June 22 at D.C. United's RFK Stadium. Kickoff is 4 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Lose 1-0 to D.C. United

The San Jose Earthquakes could not make it two straight road wins, falling 1-0 to D.C. United Saturday night at R.F.K. Stadium. D.C. United scored in the 11th minute on a penalty kick and held on for the victory, despite a flurry of second half chances for the Quakes.

D.C. United scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick. Chris Korb got the ball in the box and was taken down as he created some space for himself. Chris Pontius then slotted home the spot kick past Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for a 1-0 United advantage.

Busch came up with a good save in the 18th minute to keep the D.C. lead at one. John Thorrington picked up a loose ball at the edge of the penalty box and curled a shot toward the upper corner. Busch leaped and tipped the ball away to prevent the goal.

Shea Salinas nearly found the equalizer just over 15 minutes into the second half. Sam Cronin found him inside the box with a nicely weighted ball. Salinas took a touch to control it, before firing a hard shot that forced United goalkeeper Bill Hamid into a difficult save.

Adam Jahn also came close to tying up the match after a nifty play in the box. He received a through ball and cut back around his defender before curling a left footed shot. The ball beat Hamid but rang off the far post and out of play in the 73rd minute. A late sliding volley by Alan Gordon also just missed, as San Jose pushed forward looking for the equalizer.

The Earthquakes return home for the first time since May 18 next weekend to take on the LA Galaxy in the Bay Area's sporting event of the summer. The Quakes host the Galaxy at Stanford Stadium at 7:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, June 29, presented by Xfinity. The match, which already has over 40,000 tickets sold, will feature a Salute to the Armed Forces at halftime and a post-game fireworks extravaganza. The game will air live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

    Earthquakes slip past LA Galaxy

The Goonies put it all back together again against the team that started it all.

Shea Salinas and Alan Gordon scored in second-half injury time to give the 10-man San Jose Earthquakes a shocking 3-2 victory against the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium on Saturday night.

Salinas hammered home a loose rebound in the 92nd minute and Gordon nodded home an open header at the back post in the 93rd minute as the sellout crowd of 50,028 went bonkers. It was the second stunning comeback San Jose has mounted against the Galaxy at Stanford in as many seasons; the Quakes came from two goals down to beat LA 4-3 on June 30, 2012.

San Jose (5-7-6) improved to 2-1-0 under interim coach Mark Watson and, perhaps more importantly, rekindled memories of last season, when the Quakes had nine goals in second-half stoppage time, eight of which led to a win or draw.

OPTA Chalkboard: Gordon changes the game for Quakes

Gordon had scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute to draw San Jose to within a goal, but the Quakes' chances looked dire after defender Victor Bernardez saw two yellow cards in the space of eight minutes and was sent off in the 77th minute.

Yet LA (7-7-3) could not make goals from Marcelo Sarvas in the 20th minute and Hector Jimenez in the 65th stand up and thus missed a chance to record just their second winning streak of the season.

Salinas pounced on a free ball after LA goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was unable to corral a deflected flick header from San Jose rookie Adam Jahn.

Gordon found the game-winner moments later off a chipped cross from just inside LA's penalty area by San Jose midfielder Sam Cronin.

Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane assisted on both LA goals, but the Galaxy were left to rue their missed chances at putting the game away - especially Jon Busch's save on Jimenez in the 88th minute.

The game opened in fairly tight fashion until the Galaxy cut through San Jose's defense with a couple of nifty volleys. Donovan floated a pass across the top of San Jose's box, which Keane struck on the fly with his left foot. The ball found Sarvas open at 11 yards, where he cashed in with a right-footed volley of his own to the near post for his second goal this season.

Donovan and Keane teamed again to help Jimenez double LA's advantage. Donovan beat Bernardez to shake himself free just inside San Jose's offensive third, then fed an overlapping Keane in the left side of the Quakes' penalty area. With a clot of defenders approaching, Keane fed the ball across the 6-yard box to the far post, where Jimenez slotted home into the open net for goal No. 2 of 2013.

Cudicini had to come up big in the 50th minute, when Chris Wondolowski's header was not fully cleared, leaving a rebound for Marvin Chavez to hammer from 8 yards. But the shot went right into the body of a prone Cudicini.

Cudicini could not come up with the goods in the dying moments, however, and San Jose had found what the Quakes undoubtedly hope will be a turning point after gaining just 18 points from the first half of their MLS slate.

San Jose is back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to face the Chicago Fire. LA return home to host FC Dallas on Sunday night.

Shorthanded San Jose Earthquakes Rally, But Fall Short in 3-2 Loss vs. Chicago Fire

The San Jose Earthquakes rallied to draw even with the Chicago Fire with 18 minutes to go, but a late goal denied the visitors a point against one of the hottest teams in MLS.

San Jose (5-8-6, 21 pts.) had just 16 players on its matchday roster due to a mix of injuries, international call-ups and a pair of suspensions. Still, it was the Earthquakes who were first to the scoresheet thanks to the hustle of Alan Gordon.

Gordon tallied for the second time in two games to put his squad on top in the 14th minute. Sam Cronin opened the sequence with a free kick into the box that the Fire tried to clear. Steven Beitashour found the second ball and volleyed it to Gordon in the middle of the area. Gordon's first attempt drew the crossbar, but he followed his shot and headed home the loose ball for his third goal of 2013.

The Fire knotted the game up in the first half with a strike from Dilly Duka. Gonzalo Segares slid a pass across the top of the box that found Duka. The winger took a heavy first touch, sending the ball high into the air before bouncing a shot on frame to beat Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch to the far post.

Patrick Nyarko was next to the scoresheet for the Fire in the 47th minute. The veteran midfielder made a darting horizontal run to get in front of his defender and volley in a cross from Duka to make it 2-1 in favor of Chicago.

San Jose then equalized in the 72nd minute on a corner kick. Mehdi Ballouchy swung the spot kick into the mix where Fire substitute Joel Lindpere deflected the ball into his own net. Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez applied pressure and nearly got a touch to claim the goal.

However, Chicago would go ahead for good in the 84th minute thanks to a tap-in from forward Chris Rolfe. Strike partner Mike Magee mishit his shot wide of the target, but Rolfe found the ball in stride and tapped in the game winner from close range to stretch his team's unbeaten streak to six games.

The Earthquakes return to action on Saturday, July 6 at the New England Revolution's Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Martinez's First Career MLS Goal Leads San Jose Earthquakes to 1-0 Win

Honduran winger Walter Martinez scored his first career MLS goal to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win against Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC in front of a sold-out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

The Earthquakes (6-9-6, 24 pts.) received a stellar effort from their defensive unit, limiting Sounders FC (7-7-3, 24 pts.) to six total shots and just one on goal. The clean sheet was San Jose's second of the season, the last coming in a 1-0 win against Seattle on March 23 at Buck Shaw Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Martinez tallied the game's lone goal three minutes into the final stanza. Steven Lenhart misfired from the top of the box, but Martinez found the ball, cut back and curled a close-range shot into the upper corner for his first goal since signing with San Jose on March 15, 2013.

One minute later, Alan Gordon nearly doubled the Earthquakes' lead after a long throw-in from Dan Gargan and a flicked header from Lenhart found the target man open in front of the goal. Gordon took a volleyed shot, but it went high of the target. Lenhart also had a golden opportunity to put San Jose in front by two, but his one-on-one with Sounders FC goalkeeper Andrew Weber was blocked.

AT&T MLS All-Star nominees Victor Bernardez and Justin Morrow anchored the back line along with Steven Beitashour, Jason Hernandez and Dan Gargan, who replaced Hernandez in the 45th minute. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jon Busch earned his second shutout of the season and 22nd of his four-year career in San Jose.

The match was interim head coach Mark Watson's first at Buck Shaw Stadium. His home debut was a thrilling 3-2 comeback win against the LA Galaxy at Stanford Stadium on June 29.

The Earthquakes return to action on for an international friendly against Norwich City FC of the English Premier League on Saturday, July 20 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT with a live stream of the match available at www.sjearthquakes.com. The club's next MLS game is Saturday, July 27 against the Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Earthquakes Knock off English Premier League's Norwich City FC 1-0

The San Jose Earthquakes knocked off Norwich City FC of the English Premier League 1-0 in an international friendly at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

Trinidadian winger Cordell Cato scored the game's only goal in the seventh minute, stealing a Norwich City FC pass intended for goalkeeper Mark Bunn before slotting a shot past the charging net minder. Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the field, San Jose rose to the occasion by limiting the Canaries to four shots and only two on goal.

The win improved San Jose to 2-0-3 all-time in international friendlies against teams from the Premiership. The Earthquakes are also unbeaten at Buck Shaw Stadium in exhibitions with a 4-0-3 mark since moving into the facility in 2008.

San Jose were the more dangerous team over 90 minutes, out-shooting their guests 10-4 while looking especially threatening in the second half.

The Earthquakes created a quality chance midway through the second half with goalkeeper David Bingham initiating the action. Bingham dropkicked the ball 70 yards downfield where Sam Garza turned his defender and found himself alone on the right side of the box. Garza waited for his strike partner, Marcus Tracy, to run onto the play and sent a cross toward the near post. The ball found Tracy, but the lanky target man couldn't quite redirect the ball on target.

Adam Jahn had a golden chance to double San Jose's lead in the 75th minute. Shea Salinas found Garza in space on the left, sending a weighted pass that found the young attacker in stride. Garza one-timed his cross, locating Jahn at the near post for a volleyed attempt, but veteran Canary goalkeeper John Ruddy made a diving save to prevent the goal.

The Earthquakes return to action on Saturday, July 27 against the Portland Timbers at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Battle to 2-1 Win against Portland Timbers

The San Jose Earthquakes scored twice in the second half to earn a 2-1 win against the Portland Timbers in front of a sold out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

The win was San Jose's first against the Timbers (8-3-10, 34 pts.) since Portland joined MLS in 2011. More importantly, it drew the Earthquakes (7-9-6, 27 pts.) to within five points of fifth-place Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9-7-5, 32 pts.) for the Western Conference's final MLS Cup Playoff spot with 12 games remaining.

After a scoreless first half, San Jose broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 55th minute after Timbers defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste obstructed Shea Salinas in the area. Captain Victor Bernardez stepped up to take the kick and beat goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts with a smartly-placed shot to the lower left corner. The goal was Bernardez's first of the season and third of his two-year career with the Earthquakes.

Steven Lenhart doubled San Jose's lead three minutes later on a set piece. Salinas teed a free kick up from 40 yards out and sent an in-swinger toward goal that found Lenhart open at the back post. The target man slid and bounced a shot over Ricketts for his second goal of the season.

Portland pulled one back in the 83rd minute after a turnover in San Jose's attacking third. Diego Valeri located teammate Frederic Piquionne downfield where the second-half substitute redirected a pass to Darlington Nagbe at the top of the box. Nagbe took a touch and then slotted his shot to the right past goalkeeper Jon Busch for his sixth goal of 2013.

Earthquakes defender Jordan Stewart made his MLS debut during the match, starting and playing 90 minutes at left back. He came close to scoring in the 51st minute, winning a header on a corner kick that nearly beat the keeper if not for a quick reaction save from Ricketts.

The win inched the Earthquakes and Busch closer to a pair of milestones. San Jose needs four more wins to reach 200 in club history while Busch is two away from 100 in his 13-year MLS career.

The Earthquakes return to action on Saturday, Aug. 3 against Chivas USA at Buck Shaw Stadium, presented by Alaska Airlines. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, Univision Deportes Network, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Wondolowski Brace Leads Earthquakes to 2-0 Win against Chivas USA

    - Chris Wondolowski scored twice to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-0 win against Chivas USA on Saturday in front of a sold out crowd of 10,525 at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The win was San Jose's third in a row, moving the club to within three points of the fifth spot in the MLS Cup Playoff race. The Earthquakes (8-9-6, 30 pts.) have 11 regular season matches remaining to close the gap.

Saturday's game was Wondolowski's first with San Jose since his CONCACAF Gold Cup championship run with the United States Men's National Team. The reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player left his footprint with a goal just before halftime and then sealed the match with another midway through the second half.

The Earthquakes' first tally came in the 45th minute as Steven Beitashour sent a perfectly weighted pass from his defensive half to Victor Bernardez in the area. The Honduran center back leapt and headed a pass across the goal face to Wondolowski for the finish.

Wondolowski doubled his haul in the 87th minute, this time pouncing on a loose ball in the box. Adam Jahn slotted a pass to Shea Salinas on the right side of the area where the speedy winger blasted a shot on target, forcing Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to make a difficult save. However, Wondolowski was first to the rebound off of Kennedy's hands, chipping in his second strike from close range to up his 2013 goal total to seven.

Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch picked up his third clean sheet of the season and second in three games. The 13-year MLS veteran is also one win away from 100 in his career while the Earthquakes moved to within three of their 200th as an MLS team.

United States defender Clarence Goodson made his San Jose debut, starting and playing 90 minutes. He helped anchor a backline that also featured Beitashour, Bernardez and Englishman Jordan Stewart.

Also making his Earthquake debut was Salvadoran international Jaime Alas. The crafty winger entered for Cordell Cato in the 77th minute.

The Earthquakes return to action on Wednesday, Aug. 7 against the Montreal Impact at Saputo Stadium for their CONCACAF Champions League opener. Kickoff is 5 p.m. PT with broadcast details TBA. The club's next MLS match is Saturday, Aug. 10 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place. Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Earthquakes Come up Short in 2-0 Road Defeat to Whitecaps FC

After a scoreless first half, the San Jose Earthquakes allowed two goals in the second half to fall 2-0 to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Saturday.

After a tight first half, the Quakes nearly broke through for the game's first goal in the 55th minute. Clarence Goodson got on the end of a cross at the back post and headed one back across goal for Chris Wondolowski. The reigning Volkswagen MVP reached back for the ball but could only redirect it before Whitecaps FC midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and goalkeeper David Ousted combined to deflect the attempt and clear it away.

Whitecaps FC scored the game's first goal on a counterattack in the 60th minute. After gaining possession in their own half, Whitecaps FC quickly broke out and Reo-Coker found some space on the right wing. He sent a low cross to the center of the box and Camilo Sanvezzo slid to tap the ball into the far post for a 1-0 Whitecaps FC lead.

Sam Cronin had a shot at the equalizer after some good combination play by the Quakes just minutes later. Cordell Cato found Alan Gordon with a cross at the back post and he headed it down for Cronin 10 yards from goal, but his shot was deflected by the defense and Shea Salinas' follow up was saved by Ousted.

Kenny Miller put Whitecaps FC up by two goals on a broken play in the 74th minute. Russell Teibert slid a ball to Reo-Coker, who fanned on a shot. But Miller pounced on the loose ball and put it past Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch for a 2-0 advantage.

The Earthquakes return to Buck Shaw Stadium next Sunday, Aug. 18 to take on the top team in the Eastern Conference Sporting Kansas City. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT and will air live on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF. Sunday is Chris Wondolowski Bobblehead Night, as 5,000 fans will receive a special Wondolowski Bobblehead, presented by Wells Fargo. The bobblehead commemorates Wondolowski's record-tying 27th goal on Oct. 27, 2012 that capped his MVP campaign.

San Jose (9-10-7, 34 pts.) jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to early goals from Alan Gordon and Steven Beitashour. However, FC Dallas (9-7-10, 37 pts.) pulled one back in the first half and then completed the comeback on a penalty from Michel in the 72nd minute.

With eight games remaining, the Earthquakes are three points behind FC Dallas for the fifth and final MLS Cup Playoff spot after the LA Galaxy defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0 on Saturday.

The Earthquakes took control early at FC Dallas Stadium. Cordell Cato burst past his defender, beating him the touchline before calmly cutting a pass back to Gordon just inside the edge of the box. Gordon one-timed his shot into the net in the eighth minute for his fourth goal of the season. The strike was the fastest goal San Jose has scored in 2013.

Eight minutes later, Gordon picked up an assist after locating Rafael Baca to start a scoring sequence. Baca chipped a pass from 10 yards outside the box over FC Dallas' backline, catching Beitashour mid-run. Beitashour leapt to volley home his second career MLS goal and first of the campaign.

FC Dallas began their rally with a goal from Blas Perez in the 19th minute. Je-Vaughn Watson headed a cross from Michel toward goal where Perez tapped it past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch on the volley. Michel capped the night's scoring with a penalty in the 72nd minute.

Along with his goal and assist, Gordon reached a career milestone with his 100th MLS start.

The Earthquakes next face CD Heredia of Guatemala in Guatemala City for CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PT at Cemento Progreso Stadium. San Jose's next MLS match is on the road against the LA Galaxy on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the StubHub Center. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose had its chances early, but it was the Galaxy who found the scoreboard first. Robbie Keane chipped a pass over the Earthquakes' backline, springing Landon Donovan on the run. Donovan carried the ball into the box and beat goalkeeper Jon Busch one-on-one to give the Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

Earthquakes Extend Home-Unbeaten Streak to 14 with 0-0 Draw against Vancouver

The San Jose Earthquakes extended their home-unbeaten streak to 14 games with a 0-0 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in front of a sold out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

The tie keeps San Jose (10-11-8, 38 pts.) in the MLS Cup Playoff picture after the Portland Timbers (10-5-13, 43 pts.) picked up a draw Chivas USA, 1-1. The clean sheet was the club's sixth of the season and third in their last five games. For Jon Busch, the shutout was his 73rd in 13 seasons, tying him with current New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis for No. 5 in MLS history.

The Earthquakes pressed the action for most of the evening, out-shooting their guests 22-14. They had several golden chances to score, including a close-range blast from Clarence Goodson in the 19th minute that darted high over the crossbar. In the second half, Chris Wondolowski nearly opened the scoring with a flick off a Sam Cronin free kick, but Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David Ousted positioned himself perfectly to snare the shot.

San Jose hasn't lost at home since March 3, 2013, in a 2-0 result against Real Salt Lake to open the 2013 season. They are 9-0-5 since the loss, including a 6-0-1 slate under interim head coach Mark Watson.

The Earthquakes return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 against the Montreal Impact in CONCACAF Champions League Group 5 play. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium. San Jose's next MLS match comes on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Earthquakes Continue MLS Cup Playoff Push with 2-1 Road Win

The San Jose Earthquakes continued their push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs with an historic 2-1 win against Real Salt Lake in front of a sold out crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday.

San Jose (11-11-8, 41 pts.) is four points behind the Colorado Rapids (12-9-9, 45 pts.) for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Earthquakes have four games remaining, including road trips to play Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy as well as home matches against the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas.

In addition to three points, the Earthquakes celebrated their 200th win since joining MLS in 1996. Their first came on April 6, 1996 at Spartan Stadium, a 1-0 result against D.C. United in the league's inaugural game.

Saturday's match saw a flurry of goals midway through the first half with Steven Lenhart opening the salvo in the 18th minute. Rafael Baca sprayed a pass from midfield to Cordell Cato on the wing. The Trinidadian took a touch and sent a perfectly-placed cross toward the near post where Lenhart dove for a glancing header past Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

The hosts didn't wait long to respond as Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales linked up on a corner kick one minute later. Beckerman looped a pass toward the far post where an unmarked Morales tapped home the tying goal.

Lenhart capped the scoring moments later with a powerful header from close range. Shea Salinas took a free kick from 35 yards out that pinpointed the target man mid-stride, sealing San Jose's second road win of the season.

The brace was Lenhart's fifth multi-goal game in San Jose and sixth of his career. He also doubled his season goal total and moved up to No. 8 on the club's all-time scoring list with 19.

San Jose returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 29 against Chivas USA at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Kickoff for that game is 8 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

San Jose Earthquakes Battle LA Galaxy to 0-0 Draw at StubHub Center

The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 0-0 draw against the LA Galaxy on Sunday night at the StubHub Center. While mathematically still alive in the MLS Cup playoff chase, the draw virtually eliminated San Jose from playoff contention with one match remaining in the season.

Jon Busch posted his ninth shutout of the season as the Quakes stretched their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). The Quakes have allowed only one goal in the last six matches.

Despite not finding the back of the net, the Quakes created numerous chances in the match. Clarence Goodson nearly got the first goal of the game off a close-range header in the 15th minute. Shea Salinas whipped a ball into the U.S. International, but his powerful header went just past the post.

Jaime Penedo came up with a big save for the home side 26 minutes into the match after another great service from Salinas. Salinas' corner kick found Steven Lenhart open in the middle of the box, but Lenhart's header was parried wide by a diving Penedo.

The big saves continued for Penedo in the 41st as he blocked a great chance from Chris Wondolowski. Salinas had a follow up opportunity, but the Galaxy's Omar Gonzalez came out to deflect the shot out for a corner. Penedo then denied Sam Cronin on a long-range effort following the corner.

Despite a final push late in the second half from the Quakes, they could not find the goal to keep them in the playoff hunt.

The Earthquakes finish the regular season at home next Saturday, Oct. 26 against FC Dallas at Buck Shaw Stadium at 2:30 p.m. PT, presented by Stanford Hospital & Clinics. The game will air live on NBCSN, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

Prior to Saturday, San Jose plays its final group stage match of the 2013 CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday, Oct. 23 against CD Heredia. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium. With a win, the Quakes will move onto the quarterfinals of the competition in the spring of 2014.

    Earthquakes Top FC Dallas 2-1

The San Jose Earthquakes won their season finale 2-1 against FC Dallas on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium with Walter Martinez and Chris Wondolowski providing the firepower. The game also served as a send-off for MLS Original, Ramiro Corrales, who played the final game of his career after 18-seasons of professional soccer.

The Earthquakes (14-11-9, 51 pts.) closed their season on a seven-game MLS unbeaten streak that spanned September and October. The club was 5-0-2 during that stretch and 7-0-2 including a pair of CONCACAF Champions League wins. Despite the hot finish, San Jose was eliminated from MLS Cup Playoff contention on Saturday.

Martinez opened the scoring in the 27th minute. The Honduran international slid a firm pass on the ground toward Steven Lenhart, who stepped over the ball in front of the goal and watched it roll past FC Dallas keeper Chris Seitz. The tally was Martinez's second of the season.

Wondolowski made it 2-0 in the 57th minute with a powerful blast at the near post. Shea Salinas burst into the FC Dallas box and lost the ball on a hard challenge from an FC Dallas defender. Lenhart was first to the deflection and found Wondolowski open for a left-footed shot to the roof of the net for his 11th goal of the season.

The Earthquakes nearly finished with another clean sheet if not for Stephen Keel's goal in the 90th minute. Panamanian international Blas Perez sent a cross to the far post where Keel rose higher than anyone and nodded his shot past Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham. The goal snapped San Jose's shutout streak at 430 minutes, the second longest in club history.

Longtime Earthquakes captain Corrales started and played 71 minutes in his final professional game. San Jose teammates wore jerseys from Corrales' 18 seasons as a player to commemorate him during a special ceremony before the match. He retires as the all-time leader in club history with 250 appearances, 20,188 minutes played and 228 starts.
