Busy Sounders negotiating to acquire Honduran Olympian
    [IMG]

SEATTLE -- No team underwent more of a face-lift on the final day of the MLS transfer window than the Seattle Sounders.

Over the span of a few hours, they traded Designated Player Alvaro Fernandez to the Chicago Fire, signed FC Kaiserslautern’s Christian Tiffert, and entered into “advanced negotiations” with a 22-year-old Honduran Olympian Mario Martinez.

“To be totally honest, it’s been an absolutely chaotic, hectic 3-4 days,” Sounders General Manager Adrian Hanauer said on a Friday conference call. “I’m fairly certain I’ve developed a brain tumor from being on the phone for so many hours.

Seattle rip Galaxy apart in 4-0 thrashing
    in front of 60,908

SEATTLE — In a showdown between two of the hottest teams in MLS, the drama was extinguished early. The Seattle Sounders opened the scoring in the 6th minute and all but ended it with a pair of goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half to coast to a 4-0 win over the LA Galaxy in front of 60,908 fans at CenturyLink Field on Sunday.

The Sounders got goals from Eddie Johnson, Fredy Montero, Alex Caskey and Andy Rose and a pair of assists from Mauro Rosales as they basically had their way with a team that came into the game riding a five-match unbeaten streak.

    CCL recap:
Sounders vanquish Caledonia AIA in Trinidad

Fredy Montero continued his remarkable goalscoring form as the Seattle Sounders won a choppy CONCACAF Champions League Group Stage match 3-1 in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.

Montero’s goal, which came just three minutes after Caledonia had cut a 2-0 Seattle lead in half, was the fifth straight competitive game in which he’s scored and the eighth time he’s scored in the past seven matches across all competitions. He’s also scored in both the Sounders’ games against Caledonia. The Sounders now hold 6 points through two group stage matches with a +4 goal differential. Their final two group stage games will be against Honduran side Marathon

Record crowd expected for Sounders-Timbers clash
    [IMG]

TUKWILA, Wash. — Big crowds have become a part of normal life for the Seattle Sounders. But this coming weekend's legion of home fans will be something else entirely.

More than 66,000 tickets have already been distributed for Sunday’s game against the rival Portland Timbers for the Cascadia Cup title (9 pm ET, ESPN, live chat on MLSsoccer.com). That’s already a team record for an MLS game and it will almost certainly go down in history as the second-highest-attended non-doubleheader in league history.

“These are once-in-a-lifetime,” Sounders midfielder Brad Evans told MLSsoccer.com. “When you look back on the seasons, you remember results, not necessarily crowds, but these are ones that stick out and you say, ‘I played in front of a sold-out CenturyLink Field.’”

    Recap:
Sounders beat back Timbers 3-0 in front of 66,452

SEATTLE – The road to the Cascadia Cup still goes through Seattle.

The Portland Timbers needed only a draw to win the regional derby on Sunday, but with a goal apiece from Eddie Johnson and Fredy Montero, and a Portland own-goal, the Seattle Sounders beat their archrivals, 3-0 in front of 66,452 at CenturyLink Field – the second-largest crowd for a regular-season game in MLS history.

The Timbers can still capture the Cascadia Cup, but will have to win in Vancouver on Oct. 21 to do it.

The Sounders, meanwhile, leapfrogged the LA Galaxy into third place in the Western Conference, three points behind Real Salt Lake but with a game in hand and a two-goal lead in the first tiebreaker.

    It's Official
Sounders complete Montero loan to Millionarios, but reveal contract news

Weeks ago, rumors, reports, and a thousand tweets broke the news that Seattle Sounders star Fredy Montero was going on loan to Colombian side Millonarios in an effort to improve his chances of representing Colombia during this year's World Cup qualification round.

On Monday, the club made it official, announcing that Montero, 25, will spend the 2013 season with the Bogata-based Millonarios.

Millionarios, one of the most successful clubs in Colombian history, are the defending Liga Postobon champions after they won their 14th title during last year's Clausura tournament. As champions, they earned a spot in the 2013 Copa Libertadores, where they are placed in Group 4 with Corinthians (Brazil), San Jose (Bolivia), and Tijuana (Mexico). They will open their campaign on February 19 at home to Tijuana, who boast American internationals Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona.

Neagle headed home after Seattle strike deal with Impact
    [IMG]

Lamar Neagle is heading back to where it all started. The Seattle Sounders announced on Sunday that they have re-acquired midfielder Lamar Neagle from the Montreal Impact in exchange for an international roster spot through the end of the 2014 season.

A native of Seattle suburb Federal Way, the 25-year-old Neagle is joining Sounders FC for the third time following successful stints with the club in 2009 and 2011. Neagle spent the 2012 MLS season with the expansion Impact after he was traded by Seattle along with Mike Fucito to Montreal in exchange for forward Eddie Johnson. Neagle scored two goals with two assists in 23 appearances last season.

"We are very excited about bringing Lamar back to Seattle," Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson said in a club statement. "He is an attacking midfielder who plays smart and adds versatility to our club. Lamar scored a few key goals for us in the past while being a very consistent player. He is a great teammate and positive presence in the locker room."

Chivas USA Designated Player Joseph in Sounders camp
    [IMG]

"Who'll find a home for Shalrie Joseph?" has been one of the pressing questions of the preseason. And it looks like the answer — for Friday, at least — is the Sounders.

Joseph strolled into Seattle camp on Friday morning, according to several media reports and captured in all his Rave Green glory by Joshua Mayers of The Seattle Times:

    Report:
Schmid says unfit Joseph unlikely to join Sounders

The short flirtation between wayward MLS veteran Shalrie Joseph and the Seattle Sounders appears to be over.

Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid told the media on Saturday that he does not expect Joseph to join the club after a two-day trial, and said that the four-time MLS Best XI midfielder appeared unfit during his stay in Seattle.

A little more than a week after Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid poured cold water on a potential move following Joseph's brief trial with Seattle, the club announced that the veteran MLS midfielder will indeed be heading to the Pacific Northwest in a deal with Chivas USA.

"We're happy to add a player of Shalrie's experience to our team," said Schmid. "He's been to MLS Cups before in his tenure with New England. He's a player that has proven himself to be a leader in game situations and a player of his quality can only help us be a better team as we move into this season. "

In addition to Joseph, Seattle also acquired Chivas' No. 3 ranking in the allocation order, as well as their natural second round picks in the 2014 and 2015 MLS SuperDrafts. In exchange, Chivas USA took the Sounders' No. 15 spot in the allocation order.

    Seattle plays to a draw

Seattle Sounders FC picked up its first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers in the first match of the 2013 Cascadia Cup on Saturday night. Eddie Johnson scored for Seattle and Rodney Wallace netted a stoppage time equalizer in front of 40,150 in attendance on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.

Seattle's newest Designated Player, Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins, made his Sounders FC debut, playing the final 20 minutes and nearly connecting with Johnson for a goal in the 80th minute.

Seattle scored first in the 13th minute when Steve Zakuani intercepted a ball at midfield, took it down into the box with space and crossed to Johnson who tapped in a volley for Seattle's first goal of the 2013 MLS season. Johnson now has five goals and an assist in seven career Cascadia Cup matches.

The goal was the second for Johnson, who scored the deciding goal in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday, which was also assisted by Zakuani.

Sounders FC held the 1-0 lead into second half stoppage time when Andrew Jean-Baptiste intercepted a Seattle clearance and chipped a ball in the box that found the head of Rodney Wallace for the equalizing goal.

Johnson nearly scored a second goal in the 20th minute when he took the ball on the left side into the box, beat his man with a step-over and curled a right-footed shot on frame, forcing Donovan Ricketts into a diving save.

Seattle and Portland take the early lead in the 2013 Cascadia Cup standings with one point apiece. The next Cascadia fixture will be on May 18 when Vancouver Whitecaps FC hosts the Timbers at BC Place. Seattle's next rivalry match is against Vancouver on June 8.

Tonight's match marks the 80th time Seattle and Portland sides have met, dating back to 1975. Seattle leads the series 41-29-10.

Sounders FC visits the San Jose Earthquakes in the first road match of the season next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Seattle loses to Real Salt Lake

Brad Evans scored the lone goal for Seattle Sounders FC (0-3-1, 1 point) in a 2-1 to Real Salt Lake (2-3-1, 7 points) Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium. Robbie Findley and Luis Gil scored first half goals for RSL despite a regular-season career-high seven saves from Michael Gspurning.

The loss gives the Rave Green consecutive league losses for the first time since March 19, 2011, ending a league-record 742-day streak of recording at least one point over a two-game stretch.

Findley opened up the scoring in the eighth minute when he tracked down a long-throw in the box for a point-blank shot that was initially saved by Gspurning, but the striker knocked in the rebound attempt. The goal ended Salt Lake's 408-minute scoreless streak against Seattle dating back to May 12, 2012.

Moments before the goal, Gspurning saved a dangerous deep shot from Devon Sandoval, then recovered to stop Sebastian Velasquez's follow up attempt.

Salt Lake made it 2-0 in the 35th minute when Velasquez played a short corner kick to Ned Grabavoy on the end line, who flicked to Gil in the box for a header into the net.

In first half stoppage time, Plata got behind the defense for a one-on-one with the keeper, but Gspurning came off his line and blocked the 10-yard shot.

Seattle pulled a goal back in the 57th minute when Mauro Rosales laid off DeAndre Yedlin's cross for Evans, who delivered a 12-yard strike off the post and into the goal. It was the first goal of the season for Evans, as well as the first assist of the season for both Rosales and Yedlin.

Yedlin (19 years, 8 months, 21 days) becomes the youngest player to record a point for Sounders FC. Cordell Cato (19 years, 9 months, 24 days) previously held the mark with his assist against Dallas last season.

New Designated Player Obafemi Martins made his first start for Sounders FC after signing on March 15. In the 41st minute, he made a nice move to split the RSL center backs, but couldn't get a shot off. The Nigerian forward previously came off the bench to play nine minutes against Portland on March 16.

Gspurning's seven saves mark a regular season-career-high, short only to his nine-save performance at RSL in the 2012 Western Conference Semifinals. His 11 saves in the past two games are the most over a two-match span in 25 career games.

Evans' goal was the 19th of his career and 14th with Seattle. The midfielder was close on a couple of earlier chances, first in the 14th minute when Steve Zakuani got by multiple RSL defenders into the box and found Evans at the near post, but his shot was saved by Nick Rimando. In the 54th, he headed a Zakuani cross on frame, but Rimando made a diving save.

Including playoffs, the matchup marked the 10th between the two teams since the beginning of the 2011 season, with RSL leading 4-3-3. The three goals scored tonight are more than the teams combined to score against each other in five games last season.

Findley suffered an adductor strain minutes after his goal and was replaced by Joao Plata in the 14th minute.

Sounders FC returns to action Tuesday night with the first leg of the 2012-13 CONCACAF Champions League against Santos Laguna. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field, and will be broadcast nationally on Fox Soccer.
