Hmm, Portland could give their trade exception for the #8 pick (after New York drafts whoever Pritchard wants) and then give Sergio Rodriguez, the approximately $6 million in cap space and $2 million in cash to match Curry's $10.5 million deal. Of course, that makes the cost to Portland higher as it would burn their cap space. Alternatively, Portland could re-sign Frye to a one-year $8 million deal and trade him, with Sergio, for Curry.
That's a possibility but would definitely be a hard sell to the fans that all this cap space we saved for, the $25 mil buyout of Stevie Franchise and letting go of RLEC for nothing, and in return, we get the No. 8 pick and the big fat contract of Eddy Curry.
Hmm. I didn't think NY could trade Nate because of his pending RFA status, but maybe they can if it's before July 1st. Anyone know this?
I guess it depends on where it all leads. If, for example, Pritchard can use the #8 pick and another asset or two to get the #2 pick to select Rubio, I'd think it was worth it. But right now, that still seems hard to see. Alternatively, perhaps Pritchard would use the #8 pick to work a sign-and-trade for Sessions. If all it cost in talent was Sergio, then that would be a nice move. Signing Sessions directly would use up the cap space anyway, but the advantage of doing it this way is that it eliminates the risk of another team signing him.
Yeah... that's what I'm thinking. Portland basically punts Sergio, giving him away for a bit more cap space. Sergio's gonna make $1.5m next year, and while that's a pretty cheap player, that could help us in the free agent market. Could it be part of a bigger deal? Sure. I'm keeping my expectations in check, though, and believe it'll be just a salary giveaway. Ed O.
Good points. Certainly exciting to hear the possibilities of what could come out of all of this. There's a lot of ways this could go.
It's dated today, and the way it's written, it defines June 25 as draft day. Like it's written in the future. I think it's saying, from that vantage point, that the trade was agreed to on June 5. Ed O.
I would be shocked if it were for Curry's contract. Jared Jeffries does extend past the 2010 off season though and they would be motivated to move this. His versatility is something Pritch and Nate would find very useful. He's tough dude too. His experience in college would be another attractive aspect. I say we're going after the #8 and Jeffries.
But, Currys contract expires the year after, which is fine in my book. When he expires, we will need to be signing some of our guys to extensions. So it's like we are putting that money on hold till next year. And we get someone who can actually play in return.
Not true. We could trade Sergio and Travis for their #8 and Jeffries. Travis' 3.6M would expire after the upcoming season.
If this deal has been on the table for roughly 3 weeks isn't that about the time that we heard Nate wanted to be a Blazer? Personally I would love to get Lee as part of this deal and wouldn't be surprised to see Frye going back to NY.
Wow I will be amazed if KP pulls off some good ish again in the draft !!!!!!1 I cannot wait now. At the very least, I am pumped for the draft now. Whereas before this thread I could kinda really care less.
Is Eddy Curry's playing career completely over? I know he's had heart and knee problems (and maybe more alarmingly weight problems). He only played 3 games this year. He clearly was a bad match for D'Antoni. But is it realistic to think of him as a backup center in a more plodding half court system? If so, if we take on his garbage contract maybe you can start to think about trading Przybilla if the right deal comes along... I'm not a big fan of his game (is anybody?) But he's big and was a pretty good scorer in the post. He's even more one-dimensional than Przybilla, but a backup center doesn't really have to be that dynamic, provided the few good things they do they do well. *shrug* I suppose we'd most likely just cut him, as we did Francis.
Ultimately we'd use up our cap space though, as you pointed out, for the use of Curry and attaining the #8. I don't like it at all. The idea of sign-and-trading Frye doesn't jive though. The article acts as if this is all a done deal, which means banking on Frye isn't likely.
You just gotta think of it like Currys contract will be coming off the books next year. So it would be another RLEC on our bench. But Curry could actually play (I think) if Greg or Joel got injured.
It just doesn't add up. Frye, Lee, and Robinson cannot be dealt until after July 1st (the 15th technically). If something was pre-arranged, tampering issues would be brought up with the league by other teams. Whatever is happening is likely having to do with either us taking on Jeffries and the #8 pick or just having NY absorb Sergio for the traded player exception.
